Is this still a thing? Last update was eight months ago.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 3 years ago
@Nirmani Walpola Unfortunately the Fun Master cancelled his projects and pulled pre-orders, so that’s not a contender. Any other projects piquing your interest? Thanks for throwing your hat in the ring.
Nirmani Walpola · Author · added about 3 years ago
I would like to vote for The Fun Master, and if I can, for my own book,  The Midnight Warriors.
I am funding for this, and I already have 214 pre-orders, with 31 days left.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 3 years ago
Hey all, thanks for your patience as we work out some technical issues with the syndicate. We have lots of new, exciting projects on the platform from the manuscript contest, so we will back-pick for the remaining months of 2020 that we didn’t select for. What projects are catching your eyes?
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
Sure!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Thanks, Leo! We actually still need to back-pick for November, so let’s select one for last month and one for this month?
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
Howdy. Looks we’ve got two interesting contenders to get get back on track with a monthly selection -- Immortal Red (great enticing and tension-filled first chapter) and When Force Meets Strength (memoir of personal struggle).
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Any ideas for this month’s syndicate pick?
Dave Barrett · Author · added over 4 years ago
Hey folks. Make sure you follow up on the books from the syndicate with reviews online. I just finished My Place Among Men, and discovered that I was the first person to review on Amazon.

Get supporting your fellow authors!

Also, long time no visit, everyone. I hope you’re all staying creative :)
Michael Bennett · Author · added over 4 years ago
Resurgence seems to have a remarkable amount of plot going for it. Just the two sentence pitch mentions a rebellion, a murder covered up by the President, swords, new bodies...wow! Seems like the perfect Inkshares book - dystopian future & fantasy with sword play all in one! I’m down for that, and would definitely support that one.
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
I am inclined to defer to your judgment, Avalon :)
Kristina Brune 📚 · Author · added over 4 years ago
Hi, Avalon -

It’s definitely a slow burn and something I’ve considered switching around a bit to make the creepy stuff happen sooner, lol! Chapters 3-5 are much shorter and give a better sense of the horror setup. I wasn’t planning on releasing any chapters for another couple of weeks near future, but I would be happy to send them to the group or post here? Or, I can post them on my page early if it will help :)

Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
I’m inclined to keep an eye on Redacted—I’d like to see another chapter or two. It’s intriguing for sure and could definitely be worthy of an upcoming pick (or back-pick for September).

What about Resurgence for this month? https://www.inkshares.com/books/resurgence

Would love to support a young author and he’s already culled almost 250 pre-orders, so there is momentum. He’s got pretty clean prose and a fun, enthralling premise.

I am interested in reading more from Kristina’s Weight of Memory. The first two chapters establish a very melancholy tone, but I see that it’s listed as horror—I’d love to get a sense for her horror writing. Kristina, will you be uploading any other chapters?
Michael Bennett · Author · added over 4 years ago
Redacted looked interesting to me as well. I tried to read the opening chapter and the heavy use of opening metaphors wore me down - “it made me feel tired. Tired like the eyes of a med school intern who just worked a double shift. “ But the premise is intriguing.
Kristina Brune 📚 · Author · added over 4 years ago
Avalon, that’s awesome, thank you! I’d be happy to answer questions if anyone is curious about anything :)

Also, I saw a new book started funding recently, called Redacted that seems interesting!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Kristina, we’d be happy to consider your book—Looks like a very interesting premise.

As a reminder to everyone in the syndicate, we still need to back-pick for September since Mina Harker failed before we decided. Any projects striking interest among the group? We’ll need one for last month and this month. Thanks all!
Kristina Brune 📚 · Author · added over 4 years ago
Great, thank you! I’ve seen a lot of great stories on Inkshares and am excited to support fellow authors. And of course I’d love for my own novel to be considered - if that’s okay to say here ;) Thanks again!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Hi Kristina—welcome! That’s correct—we chat about potential projects to syndicate each month here. We don’t have a formal process—it’s just discussion-based.
Kristina Brune 📚 · Author · added over 4 years ago
Hi, Avalon! I’m new to the syndicates so I’m wondering how they’re chosen. Do we just check back here? Make recommendations? Thanks :)
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Hi all! Are we good to support Mina Harker this round or is something else pulling harder? Would like to do so today as it’s the end of the month!
Michael Bennett · Author · added over 4 years ago
I do like Mina Harker. It’s a bit slow-paced, but I think that’s appropriate for the subject matter.  And it creates a very creepy mood (in a good way).
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
Another on my radar is Onward, but I have a Canadian and military bias in favour of that :)
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
👍👍
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Hi all, thanks for your input here. It sounds like we are set to go with All Daughters Rise for last month’s pick so I’ll get that going! I do not think we should discount Mina Harker for this month’s pick though—more and more, we are acquiring books based on other factors (interest from the readers on Inkshares, the strength of the writing, fresh premise, etc.). Although it certainly helps, a book doesn’t necessarily need to crowdfund 750 pre-orders in order for us to pay attention, as we’ve seen with several books.

In the meantime, any other projects striking your fancy?
Michael Bennett · Author · added over 4 years ago
I would say that Mina Harker seems like a bit of a hopeless cause in terms of reaching its funding target. My suspicion is that the author did not understand that crowdfunding requires you to bring your own crowd to the party. Would Inkshares allow him to withdraw and try again once he develops a marketing plan? If so, I think that is the best course for Mina Harker and would support the queer winged vampires version of Breakfast Club.
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
The first full chapter of All Daughters Rise is up and I’d say it’s a solid contender for pick of the month. So somebody needs to cast a deciding vote between it and Mina Harker.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Absolutely—we still have a few more days.
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
Fine by me. Shall we give someone else a chance to second that motion?
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Leo, that one has definitely piqued my interest! I’m happy to see it’s funding now. Let’s go with that one this month?
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
Mina Harker, perhaps?
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
We do need to choose a book to syndicate in the next few days. Any other recent projects piquing your interest?
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
On that point, Michael, I’m waiting on that next chapter to get a stronger sense myself as to whether this does fit the bill for an "epic" fantasy and whether or not it takes place in a fictional world, a period in the past, or in the present of this world.
Michael Bennett · Author · added over 4 years ago
I must admit I cannot follow the Prelude so well. Is she some kind of winged vampire (all the blood references), and is she killing humans on earth (more or less as we know it) or in some kind of Middle Earth type location? When I see “humans” I always assume earth. But I am not well attuned to epic fantasy. Perhaps for epic fantasy fans this is typical exposition. And a queer Underworld meets Breakfast Club sounds super fun to read, so I am down to support it.
Leo Valiquette · Author · added over 4 years ago
I’d like another chapter to read -- she did promise to upload one by week’s end.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 4 years ago
Considering All Daughters Rise for this month’s staff pick: "Underworld meets The Breakfast Club but way more queer." Sounds fun and perfectly irreverent. Thoughts? Any other contenders?

That’s awesome, thank you very much! And thank you, Chip, for making the suggestion.

Let me ponder a March pick.

Let’s do Leo’s book for the Feb pick! Any ideas for March?
Leo Valiquette · Author · added about 5 years ago
Looks like I need to recuse myself from the discussion :)
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 5 years ago
Great! Any other contenders for the February pick? We’re a day late but it’s all good.
Chip Colquhoun · Author · added about 5 years ago
Really wish I’d discovered this earlier, as there are loads of great titles in those previous Syndicate picks that I guess I’ve missed out on by joining as late as February.

Cannae wait to see the picks for February and March! If you’re looking for recommendations (is that how this works?), then my two would be the fantasy Bane of All Things and the crime thriller Dead Ringers – different genres, but both giving a great sense of character and dramatic movement from the off.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 5 years ago
Awesome, let’s do it!
Leo Valiquette · Author · added about 5 years ago
But if you are going to need someone to make a call -- The Unforgiven Dead.
Leo Valiquette · Author · added about 5 years ago
Geez, tough choice between those two. I’d have to leave it to a coin toss.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 5 years ago
Hi all, apologies for the delay on this! what a busy month it’s been for Inkshares with poring over all of the incredible manuscripts that came through the contest. We have a day and a half or so for a January selection—what are folks most interested in? My top picks would be The Unforgiven Dead and REEL.

At this point, I wouldn’t worry so much about which books are close to funding, since hitting 750 is such a long shot for most. At this point, we’re more interested in determining which books we publish based on a wide array of indicators beyond pre-orders. Throwing our support behind a great project can arguably be more helpful now than ever, especially if they are books with a ton of potential. Let me know your thoughts!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Sounds great! Love the premise and excited to see several books reaching 250 unique readers and over in the contest!
Keylin Rivers · Author · added over 5 years ago
Agreed - lets help someone hit that 250 mark (or at least get close)!
Patrick R Delaney · Reader · added over 5 years ago
I vote for Celso! We should be able to help him hit 250 woohoo!Mike has hit 250 and then some. Super happy for him!
dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
Looks like Michael’s book, BLIND, passed the 250 mark and is in 1st place, woohoo! Patrick got some help already, hope he can get to that 250 mark with The House that Fell from the Sky. The leaves Celso Hurtado with The Ghost Tracks, we might be able to get him close enough to nail down a pub deal this week. What do you all say?
dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
Would really like to push someone into the 250 zone, and it looks like we have 2 contenders in the horror contest. CELSO HURTADO, or MICHAEL SALTENBERGER
Keylin Rivers · Author · added over 5 years ago
Hi folks, new to the Syndicate, though this would be a great way to engage with other writers and readers on here! Can’t wait to look at some books for December - will we be supporting something in the competition?
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Excellent! Let’s do Cat’s Paw this month and one of those other incredible contenders for December.
Nick Nafpliotis · Author · added over 5 years ago
Thanks Patrick--I’d be honored to be included...but maybe for December ;) Cat’s Paw looks like a pretty great choice.
Patrick R Delaney · Reader · added over 5 years ago
Cat’s Paw seems like a solid choice! Three other projects I’ve noticed in the horror contest are Snipe Hunt by Nick Nafpliotis and Blind by Michael Saltenberger. Grimalkin also has some fantastic writing (as do they all) with a certain subtle charm. All three have interesting concepts and are pretty close together on the board right now.
dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
Hi Avalon, I’m good with Cat’s Paw. Be good to boost the project toward the 250 pre-order mark.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Hi all! It’s that time of the month again...what projects are catching your attention? We discussed choosing Cat’s Paw this time around. Thoughts on that?

I just wanted to give a quick thank you to the Staff Syndicate for choosing "House" this month. I couldn’t be more excited, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it ends up placing in the contest. Thanks so much to everyone for their kind words and support, it is an amazing feeling knowing how many talented authors are behind me on the project!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago

dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
okay! Let’s do The House that Fell from the Sky this month, and sign me up for Cat’s Paw next month.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
@dean fearce yes! I’d love to support a book funding in the contest this month, next month, and the following if we can make that happen. I’m sure you saw that Death as a Living funded without us needing to support it! Thoughts on whether it should be Cat’s Paw or The House that Fell from the Sky this month? Anyone else in the syndicate, please feel free to chime in as well!
dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
Liking Cat’s Paw in the Mystery Contest, and The House that Fell from the Sky in the Horror Contest. There is a special place in my mean little heart for the Horror Contest...

True crime is so creeeepy! Let’s go for it, Avalon. Oh, wait, it’s in production already. Never mind.

Any suggestions for this month’s pick? Death as a Living is making serious headway—would be happy to throw our support behind that one!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Apologies for the delay everyone! Just selected What She Lost. We are almost to October! Looks like we will have some exciting projects to choose from in the mystery-thriller contest. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
dean fearce · Author · added over 5 years ago
What She Lost is a great pick, totally on board with this one. Ms. Hunter is writing in 1st person present tense, and she can write. Sweet Tarts, Mike and Ikes, Matchbox cars...she hooked me halfway through the 2nd paragraph of the 1st chapter.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Hi all—any favorite contenders for this month’s staff pick? Looks like What She Lost is gaining momentum and the story is very moving. Thoughts?
Tonya Mitchell · Reader · added over 5 years ago
Avalon and the rest of you awesome people, thank you for selecting A Feigned Madness for the August staff syndicate pick. You made my day/week/month. Happy tears, ugly cry! Xoxo
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Fantastic! I think we should go ahead and pick that one for our August book unless people have other contenders?
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 5 years ago
I concur... A Feigned Madness looks great.  I believe this is based on a true story. I saw a doc a few years ago on a similar story. Riveting.

Hey Avalon, A Feigned Madness is a great premise and it’s got Netflix series written all over it. I support your recommendation 100%. Tonya’s an excellent writer and a nice person. Nice people smell nice.

i like anything with madness in the title...will check it out, thanks!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Hope you all had a great weekend! Please check out A Feigned Madness when you get a chance. It just started the funding—the writing is so good and the story is super compelling. Would love for it to be next month’s pick.

Perfect.  Have a great weekend, everyone!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 5 years ago
Great! I’ll make that happen unless any objections or other books to discuss?
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
Actually that sounds great.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
Thanks, Brian! Glad to see Tahani’s sequel is up and running and that could be a good contender, though Evan Graham’s Proteus is fairly close to funding and this could be a good way to give him an extra bump to continue to 750. I think it would be great to support another hard sci-fi book, and Evan’s a good writer and a hard worker for sure. Thoughts on that?
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
How about Faoii Betrayer from Tahani Nelson?  It’s a sequel, but it’s gaining momentum.  Definitely open to other ideas too, but I believe this is a solid contender.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
Hi all! What exciting new projects are piquing your interest this month?
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
Excellent. Congrats to Brian Guthrie!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
Yeah, I think that’s definitely a fair point! Let’s do it. :)
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
Normally avoid sequels for syndicate support, but Guthrie has been around a long time and it’s been a long time since Rise was released.  I’m good with throwing our funding toward Fall.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
Hi all! It’s about that time to choose a pick for June. Any immediate thoughts? What projects have been piquing your interest?
Lorenzo Petruzziello · Author · added almost 6 years ago

Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
Cool deal.  I’m in.
Who knows, maybe our boost will lead to more.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
A Cold Day to Drown has such a cool concept—I’d be happy with backing that one, too. There aren’t a ton of newer projects that are currently well underway to hitting 750, but regardless, it’ still possible for projects to get greenlit for publication in other ways, like receiving a ton of interest on the platform from readers, other authors, and rights buyers.  If you recall, this is how Devil’s Call came to our attention.

Do we all want to go with that one or are there projects others wish to consider?
dean fearce · Author · added almost 6 years ago
Brian’s right, but without the Quill imprint (and no contests?) it’s going to be harder to pick the sure things. Also agree with his selection of A Cold Day to Drown as well as Sean Flood’s Wulf that’s in Draft
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 6 years ago
I really dig the premise of A Cold Day To Drown by Andrew Linke.  Downside is that it only has 9 copies sold.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 6 years ago
Hi all, time for our May pick! Anything in mind?
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 6 years ago
Fantastic! Let’s do Trigor. Thanks all!
dean fearce · Author · added about 6 years ago
Haven’t had much time to explore new titles here, but I am a sucker for packaging and will purchase a book based on a well-crafted cover. My point? Pilot X has one of my favorite book covers on Inkshares so if we back the sequel I will have to buy the 1st in the series and will do so gladly so I might admire that cover in the privacy of my own hovel.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added about 6 years ago
I’m with you on this. Trigor looks great and I’m happy to give it a boost.  Open to other ideas, of course.  But Trigor has a vote from me so far.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 6 years ago
Hey all--it’s that time again! Any projects of particular interest? Tom Merritt’s sequel to Pilot X, Trigor, could be a great option, though we generally prefer to choose books by authors who haven’t yet funded on Inkshares.

dean fearce · Author · added about 6 years ago
to Brian’s point earlier about the success factor RofA is moving fast,
with Quill off the menu, we might expect longer funding cycles and fewer successes...so might need to manage expectation around that

Thank you Staff Syndicate members for this honor. I love being part of a Syndicate, makes me feel like a made man. Inkshares has been good to me since I joined and I’m happy to be a part of this supportive community. You all have really made my day today. Earlier, I received a complimentary DM from a reader and it made me teary eyed. Then this message came over and my head got so fat the barber had to use a rotary mower to give me a flat top. I like Michael’s suggestion. "Murder Happens" does look good. :)

Michael Ostrowski · Author · added over 6 years ago
Aloha All, I’m really digging Dean Fearce’s "Murder Happens".   Helluva voice, crisp writing, and I’m completely hooked into the story.  Very much worth the syndicate’s consideration!

Thank you, Kate! Any other stories to nominate/discuss? I’ve been really enjoying The Silent Scream of Melania Trump myself. :) Very timely.

Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 6 years ago
Hi everyone, I’ve been browsing the funding novels awhile now, and there are some great choices.  But so many of them have few pre-orders and only a few days left.  Our backing won’t help these.
However, I came across CROW’S GAMBIT by Patrick Tebbe.  It’s got 160 pre-orders, 95 days left, and it was backed by another Syndicate.  It’s got a bit of momentum and it’s a cool idea for a story.  I think this book could really benefit from our support.  Thanks

Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 6 years ago
I love this project! I’m all in. Any other thoughts?
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 6 years ago
Hey everyone.  I have a new idea for July’s selection.  How about A Word In A Glass Mind, by Reagan Morrison.  It’s funding now and could use a shot of adrenaline.  I like the concept and the writing is solid.  Best of luck to The Experiment Himself.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 6 years ago
Hi everyone! Thanks for your patience here! What a whirlwind of a week it’s been with The Punch Escrow and Not afraid of the Fall. It all means good things for Inkshares in general. :) Unfortunately we won’t be able to select The Experiment Himself as the author is looking to pursue options outside of Inkshares and will be pulling his book soon.  Wold people like to take the weekend to consider other projects and we can decide on Monday and pull the trigger on July’s pick? Thankful to you all for being such amazing pillars of the Inkshares community.
Adam Mock · Author · added over 6 years ago
I just entered my book Crawls in the latest Inkshares contest. I would love your support and reviews. Thanks to all.

Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 6 years ago
This project is way cool! I’m all for it! Everyone in?
William Schiele · Author · added almost 7 years ago
I share the opinion of Ferd and Brian. The Experiment Himself is a title I’ve been watching for a while.  Tne interconnectedness of our brains is explored through the imaginative premise of an extruded brain and its experiences.  Takim’s writing is taut and expressive and I look forward to the rest of the story.  I believe the support of this syndicate would be well placed behind this project.  Thank you.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 7 years ago
I second The Experiment Himself.  Takim’s story caught my eye a few months ago, but I’d gotten distracted.  So glad Ferd refreshed my memory on this really cool premise.
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 7 years ago
In that case, I would like to suggest The Experiment Himself by @Takim Williams . I became aware of this project early in the recent Nerdist contest and was blown away by the premise: a brain connected to the internet of things, with the added elements of human loss, as well as addressing the dilemmas of right and wrong. Our support would give this worthy project a good push and raise awareness.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 7 years ago
Hi all,  I’d love if we could instill somewhat of a rule that we don’t choose books by authors who already have a book funded on Inkshares. It doesn’t feel right to our team otherwise. There are some amazing projects out there. I’ll come back tomorrow with some suggestions and hopefully we can lock this down by the end of the month! If you have more suggestions please keep them coming!
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 7 years ago
I agree in general that we should be looking for promising new projects, from new, undiscovered authors. I think the key word is "promising." Personally, I think excellence outweighs new/undiscovered.

With that in mind, if we don’t find a clear new gem, supporting an excellent writer like @Evan Graham and his new project Proteus would be just fine with me. It would not be the first time this syndicate has supported an author who has another project previously funded on Inkshares. Our support would get him to Quill.

@Avalon Marissa Radys, it is your call, of course. But the title you mentioned has sold 19 copies with only 14 days left in funding. Maybe this project is not the one.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 7 years ago
Hey all! Happy July. I want to reiterate that I’d really love for us to support new projects by authors that haven’t previously funded with Inkshares. It would be great to use our collective power to fund the true "underdogs," or projects that are virtually undiscovered. One project that’s been catching my eye is I Think You Dropped This: https://www.inkshares.com/books/i-think-you-dropped-this. Any others?

Jacqui Castle · Author · edited almost 7 years ago
Zachary (The Rise and Fall of Gods and Housewives)  just got in touch with me, and he is not going to be publishing with Inkshares. Sounds like he may have another deal in the works. Proteus or Crow’s Gambit are my suggestions this month.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 7 years ago
Hey everyone, July is upon us already! Looks like Gods & Housewives has reached Quill. Do we still want to back it this month?
If we’re looking at alternatives, I’ll offer up Evan Graham’s PROTEUS.  It did well in the Nerdist contest, but hasn’t hit Quill yet.
Michael Ostrowski · Author · added almost 7 years ago
A huge congrats to Jane-Holly for this month’s pick, and to Zachary for next!  Both  super talented writers  and very deserving!

Sounds great, all! Let’s go for Mutants this month and Gods & Housewives the following.
William Schiele · Author · added almost 7 years ago
I can see by the posts that two titles seem to be in the running for this month and next’s selection.  I would like to suggest another book that meets the criterion of the syndicate, is holding strong in the Nerdist Contest and is a great story that will grow in popularity, reaching a wider audience as a published book.  For the syndicate’s consideration, I nominate Mission 51, by Ferd Crotte as the supported title for June.
Thank you.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 7 years ago
I agree that our goal is to lift up authors and support underdogs.  At the same time, will we make decisions based on the author (and how many books have reached Quill), or choose on a book-by-book basis.
I’m open to whatever direction the Syndicate wants to go.
I do think we can get the best of both worlds by giving June to Mutants and July to Gods & Housewives (I love that title so much!)
Jacqui Castle · Author · edited almost 7 years ago
I agree. I am happy to support either/both, but if it comes down to votes, I am still for God’s and Housewives. The selection would also put him over Quill as of his count now.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 7 years ago
That certainly makes sense. My feeling is that since Jane’s Fae Child has already hit Quill and will be published, it would be lovely to continue to broaden the community of published and soon-to-be-published authors on Inkshares (especially since the expressed goal of this Syndicate is to help the underdogs that catch our attention).  Thoughts on that?
Jacqui Castle · Author · added almost 7 years ago
It looks like The Rise and Fall of Gods and Housewives has 42 days left of campaigning, and I know that the contest wraps up soon for Jane-Holly’s Mutants. Perhaps we could go with Mutants this month and consider Gods and Housewives for July.
Michael Ostrowski · Author · added almost 7 years ago
Aloha All!  There are so many great books to choose from, and everyone is incredibly talented. All could be picked, but my vote is for Jane-Holly’s Mutants: Uprising.
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 7 years ago
Despite the fact that @Jane-Holly Meissner and several others including myself are in the same contest... covfefe! She is a fabulous, creative writer, has an interesting story, and is presenting it in a brave 2nd person narrative. - Not to hurt anyone else’s feelings who are in the contests, but +1 for Mutants: Uprising!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added almost 7 years ago
Hi all! I’m super interested in  The Rise and Fall of Gods and Housewives, as well. Any other votes to cast? Sound like it’s between that one and Mutants: Uprising, though the former has more votes. Thoughts?

Alastair Luft · Author · added almost 7 years ago
I agree with @Jacqui Castle; I think The Rise and Fall of Gods and Housewives would be a great selection for this round.
Jacqui Castle · Author · added almost 7 years ago
I would like to nominate The Rise and Fall of Gods and Housewives by Zachary Sergi.  He has had a strong start to his campaign, and our support could get him closer to Quill and possibly give him the momentum needed to strive for full funding, and his book seems a bit Neil Gaiman-esque.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 7 years ago
Hi everyone, I’m going to start early for June’s proposals: please take a look at Jane-Holly Meissner’s "Mutants: Uprising"
Here’s the logline...  "X-Men meets Call of Cthulhu-It’s hard to be the ’good guy’ when you lead the local cell of the League, a terrorist organization. Gang warfare turns out to be the least of your worries when shadowy organizations start targeting your friends"
Have a great Memorial Day!

Fernando Crôtte · Author · added about 7 years ago
I’m not sure anyone is close to reaching the Quill level of funding for our contribution to make that final push. That being said, my favorite project currently in funding is Rule Britannia by Helen McKeon. It is well-written, clever, and a great mix of SciFi, historical fiction and steampunk! Our support would certainly give her a boost not only in preorder numbers but also in exposure.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 7 years ago

Everything Is Normal can really benefit from our help.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added about 7 years ago
Hi everyone. I’m in total agreement that Everything is Normal would be a fantastic pick. It’s unlike anything on Inkshares I’ve seen to date and it has a real shot of hitting full publishing by the end of the campaign. I know Wake Up Call is also of interest.  Please do chime in with your votes (hopefully between those two so we can best narrow down) if you’d like to!
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added about 7 years ago
Everything is Normal sounds truly extraordinary. Sergey seems to be on his way to full funding anyway, but I would love to see our syndicate be part of that. His project certainly deserves some syndicate bling on the project page!
Jacqui Castle · Author · edited about 7 years ago
Hi Everyone. I like Wake Up Call. I would also like to nominate Everything is Normal: The Life and Times of a Soviet Kid by Sergey Grechishkin It has a real shot at full Inkshares, though with his momentum he will likely reach it without us.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added about 7 years ago
Hey everyone,
March is upon us and the selections are kind of strange- so many great stories funding, but have so few orders that our help would barely make a dent in getting them to Quill.
However, I am really liking @J.T.R. Russell’s Wake Up Call.
What novels do you want to promote?

Jacqui Castle · Author · added about 7 years ago
I am grinning ear to ear right now and trying not to scream(just put the kids to bed)! All of you are amazing and I can’t thank you enough. I just checked my email to see that not only have I been picked by this wonderful syndicate, but that your support put me past the Quill line. Wow! Thank you!!!! I am going to keep going full steam ahead and try for full Inkshares, but just knowing that either way the book will be in your hands down the line is a dream come true. Thank you!

That’s the dilemma with being in the syndicate- too many great choices!
All the suggestions are definitely worthy.  For December and to close out 2016, I cast my vote for Sorcery For Beginners!
Happy holidays, everyone!!
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added over 7 years ago
Last month we had talked about Cayla Keenan’s Catching Stars for this month. I still love it. I also love Sorcery for Beginners. I have pre-ordered both. They don’t need our help reaching Quill as they have both made it, but reaching the 750 full-tilt boogie seems like a long shot for both. Nevertheless, I would be happy to see either get the nod. They are certainly worthy!

Just another suggestion, I love the YA project Fae Child by Jane-Holly Meissner because of its sheer beauty.

This is a message from Joe:

He doesn’t belong to this syndicate so he can’t post here:

Hey everyone in the Staff Syndicate. I wanted to thank you guys for your support in nominating BLUE WATER for the last few rounds. I kind of figured once I hit Quill without getting the pick the support would naturally move somewhere else. And while I was really hoping to still get the nod for November everyone seemed willing to give because the pick from both Staff and/or Bechdel would mean the world and be very validating, as well as put the book on a short list of very respected books, I do understand the drive to use the syndicate power to push books below the lines closer to a goal. So if your pick this month goes to Witherfist to push it closer to Quill, I understand and respect your choice. I’m not getting an extension, my campaign ends in two weeks at which point I’m out of the running for either Staff or Bechdel but thrilled that I’ve gotten all the support I have during this rollercoaster ride. I’m not a staff syndicate member so I can’t post this there. If one of you could, I’d really appreciate it.
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added over 7 years ago
Blue Water is a fantastic book. I nominated it last month because I was lucky enough to read it and it is truly great. With that said. Blue Water already hit Quill, it has only 13 days left in its campaign and, unless Joe is planning to ask for an extension, it is unlikely that he will hit 750. I feel like our support can make a big difference with Witherfist, more than on Blue Water at this point.
Regina McMenomy, Ph.D. · Author · added over 7 years ago
I love Witherfist as well but agree with @Brian Fitzpatrick and think @Joseph Parcell and Blue Water should be the November pick as mentioned earlier this month.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
I’m liking Witherfist, but I also want to stick with the idea hatched last month to give November to Blue Water by Joseph Parcell.

Fernando Crôtte · Author · edited over 7 years ago
Thinking ahead for November, I would like to suggest Witherfist, by Jenny Graham-Jones. It is beautifully written, with Anne Rice-ish world-building detail, and excellent action/pace. A boost from our syndicate would get her close to Quill.

I think Tantalus Depths for October and Blue Water for November is a brilliant plan!
Kyle T. Cowan · Author · added over 7 years ago
Agreed, Tantalus Depths by @Evan Graham this month and perhaps Blue Water by @Joseph Parcell for November.
Kevin Muhleisen · Author · added over 7 years ago
I agree with @Brian Fitzpatrick and @Jamison Stone.  I also think everyone’s goal is to make it to the 750 pre-orders. With just over 2 weeks remaining, Tantalus Depths by @Evan Graham  is running short on time. I say Tantalus Depths for  October and Blue Water by @Joseph Parcell in November. From what I’ve read, both books seem to be very good.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
I’d cast my vote for  Tantalus Depths by @Evan Graham THIS month and Blue Water by @Joseph Parcell NEXT month. This is due to time frames--Tantalus Depths had 17 days left and Blue Water 46.

To learn more about Tantalus Depths check out an awesome guest post Evan did on my blog HERE:  http://apotheosisstudios.com/blog/2016/6/23/tantalus-depths-guest-post-by-evan-graham-inkshares-author

It’s got some really great info about his story. Evan has been amazing with his updates, and I’m really excited to read his hard sci-fi thriller!
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
I like both titles.  What I would like to do is give October to Tantalus Depths, then November to Blue Water.
Regina McMenomy, Ph.D. · Author · added over 7 years ago
I’d like to ask that we consider Tantalus Depths for our nomination. Evan has faced insane setbacks with the credit issue and is still working toward full funding. Honestly, I would have settled for Quill given what he’s been up against especially since there hasn’t been any confirmation that the credit issue is over for any of us.

Personally, I can wholeheartedly say I never would have made it to Quill without Evan’s support and belief in my book. I "quit" more than one time in the almost 120 days I’ve run my campaign and it was consistently Evan who helped pull me out of my own funk by reminding me there was more to publishing a book than simply having my name on the title page. He was my introduction to the Inkshares community, the first message I received, and is consistently a positive member of the community.  Our support would help push him toward that finish line and full funding for a very worthy book. (He sent me the whole book. I know exactly how good it is!)
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added over 7 years ago
Hi, as we get closer to the end of the month I want to make my first book recommendation ever :-) I want to recommend Blue Water from Joseph Parcell. I just finished reading the book and it is fantastic. As of now it is really close to hit Quill and, who knows, with our help and endorsement could maybe even go full funding. Thanks!

@david michael olsen I think Wings of a Pirate will be able to hit Quill on its own. As it stands, Sunshine has more of a gap to reach and less time, so I’d rather push that lever now. Maybe it’s the added boost Kyle’s campaign needs to secure the end goal. We can always reconsider Wings for next month’s pick if it hasn’t reached Quill by then!
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 7 years ago
@Eric H. Heisner thanks so much for the kind words. It’s an honor to be able to lead a syndicate of such talented, supportive authors!

I might be a tad biased by Sunshine since I LOVED Season 1 of Preacher. ;) But in all sincerity, I agree with @Jamison Stone that it’s an important story to be told, especially to a YA audience. I love how @Kyle T. Cowan has made the camp setting the villain in the story — a pretty unique move, especially for the genre. I also love the flare of mystery and dark comedy the story brings. So excited to bring this book closer to publication!

Thanks so much, everyone.

@Avalon Marissa Radys - It seems like there are two great books that could use a boost in the next 60 days that this forum is bringing up. Wings of a Pirate, and Sunshine is Forever. If my math is correct this Syndicate alone would get WoaP to 246 pre-orders - almost to its Quill goal and all but insuring that it gets funded prior to its deadline.

Conversely, it would bring SiF (Sunshine is Forever)to 608. WofP has 68 days left SiF 56. Both would still be in funding next month. My vote would be for WofP this round, and SiF next round? Or Vise-Versa.

Eric H. Heisner · Author · added over 7 years ago
Well said @Avalon Marissa Radys !  Every author on this site is working their hardest to go beyond their network for preorders and if the Syndicate can give that extra push to help them achieve publication, we’re all here to support that.  We’ve seen the projects that get so close and fail to get those last few dozen orders.  Let’s be the champion who really makes the difference.  I think the staff at Inkshares is the best qualified to determine who is working hard toward that goal and an unbiased judge of great writing.   Any title you decide we will all support!!
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
I totally agree and that’s exactly why I think Sunshine Is Forever is the perfect choice for this month! Lets help push @Kyle T. Cowan over the 750 edge!
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added over 7 years ago
I agree, with our current membership we can be more useful giving that final push to authors who are close to the finish line.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 7 years ago
@Eric H. Heisner I love this idea too — do you have any in mind? I personally think the syndicates’ strongest ability right now is to push projects that are on the brink of hitting a goal over the threshold (whether it’s Quill or Inkshares), enabling them to get published.   Once the syndicate grows larger (say upwards of 200 members), I think we could make a great difference with projects that have much lower pre-order numbers.

If others have a difference of opinion, let’s definitely consider other projects. Let’s aim to have a final decision by end of day today. Thanks, all!
Eric H. Heisner · Author · added over 7 years ago
Do we want to look deeper for good projects that haven’t reached Quill level yet?  It seems that those would be the "underdogs" that need the most help to get published and syndicate support.
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added over 7 years ago
Fantastic! I know I had mentioned several other possibilities previously, but you can definitely count me in for Sunshine is Forever as well. It is unique, meaningful, and completely worthy of our support. This will give Kyle a great boost towards the full publishing goal.
Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 7 years ago
Sunshine is Forever would be an excellent choice. I’d be happy to back that project as well — it’s so close! Any others recommendations folks would like to discuss or are we all pretty set on that one? I know I’ve seen recs for The Knightmares and Tantalus Depths. I do think backing Sunshine at this stage would be very meaningful to the project.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
Sunshine Is Forever is getting a lot of love here, @Avalon Marissa Radys what are your thoughts? I’d love to help @Kyle T. Cowan hit the very challenging Inkshares goal of 750!
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
Sounds good to me.  I throw in with Sunshine as well!
Kevin O’Coffey · Author · added over 7 years ago
There are some good nominees here that I look forward to supporting, but Sunshine is Forever is getting oh so close to the promised land. It’s an important book, and way different from just about anything else on Inkshares. I think we could really help this project along.
Peter Ryan · Author · added over 7 years ago
I’ll jump in and be a third on Sunshine Is Forever. Kyle has written a powerful book on an important topic. It’d be great to give him the syndicate’s support.
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added over 7 years ago
I want to second @Jamison Stone ’s nomination. As many of you may know the subject of depression and mental illness is one close to my heart. Also Kyle is a great writer.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
Fellow Syndicate members and @Avalon Marissa Radys I’d like to nominate @Kyle T. Cowan ’s novel Sunshine Is Forever.  He wrote a very good guest post on my blog HERE which give a great overview of his book and of him.

http://apotheosisstudios.com/blog/2016/8/24/sunshine-is-forever-guest-post-by-kyle-t-cowan

Although you can read about it on the blog posting, in addition to being a writer he is also an actor and director, too.  He is on several TV shows (read the blog post!) and wrote, directed, starred, produced, and edited the movie Camouflage in 2014. Its all pretty cool, but I’ll let you read the post for yourselves!

I’d like to make sure we don’t forget Tantalus Depths which got lots of support last month. Evan is working so hard on his campaign against a lot of difficult circumstances and is a truly amazing member of our community. :)
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added over 7 years ago
I feel the same way. I’d love to support Eric and Wings of the pirate!
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
Yes, Wings is an excellent choice! I already have my copy ordered and would be happy to throw our support Eric’s way!
David M. Olsen · Author · added over 7 years ago
Wings of the Pirate is at 200 pre-orders. Eric is a member of this group, and a multi-published author. Maybe give his project a look.

I want to suggest Overture by Issa Puppi.  She has a powerful writing voice and the story is constructed in an interesting way.  She only has 4 pre-orders and 56 days left- so I don’t know what her marketing efforts have been thus far, and I’m not sure a boost from us will be wasted or really help her.  Thoughts?

I love Knightmares! Truly great stuff! But it has already reached Quill. Not that we can’t give it a push toward full funding, but perhaps we should consider others.

A few that have caught my eye include:
Spectrum, by Antimony Noon
Cross, Massachusetts, by Nicholas Efstathiou
Witherfist, by Jenny Graham-Jones
Fae Child, by Jane-Holly Meissner
The City Will Fall, by Kim Whale
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
Oh yes, I followed Knightmares some time ago and really liked the premise.  So crazy it just might work!
Peter Ryan · Author · added over 7 years ago
Knightmares does look like fun. I also like This Poem Doesn’t Mean Anything - quirky stuff.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
I think no current contest contestants is the rule.

I’m wondering what folks are thinking, Knightmares would be fun.

Can I recommend "Sparked" for a pick somewhere over the course of its campaign? It is a project by two of the instructors at Stanford’s Novel Writing Program. It launched today in the Geek and Sundry competition, it has over 100 pre-orders already.

Hello Staff Syndicate,

New Syndicate Member here. I have been purchasing, supporting, and reading some of the books on Inkshares for sometime now. I love the platform and am pretty enamored with the site and its mission.

One thing that I have noticed through my interaction here, is the overwhelming number of Sci-fi and Fantasy genre books (due to the competitions largely I understand). I think syndicates like this might help level the playing field.

As a writer in the literary field (with a nod to the commercial) I have sort of wondered if this platform will work as well for lit fic as successfully as it has for the genres. I am a student at Stanford’s two-year Novel Writing program, and have spent about as long writing the current novel I have up—Striver. It has been through multiple developmental edits one-on-one with former instructors and it is pretty close to ready to see the light of day.

I would like to get this groups opinion on it, and also see whether the group would consider it for inclusion as a pick in the future. As my campaign hasn’t started, I have plenty of time.

I look forward to seeing what the group comes up with next.

https://www.inkshares.com/books/striver-539885?recommended=true

p.s. Knightmares and Wings of the Pirate both caught my eye and I have preordered them.

Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 7 years ago
@Jamison Stone  The Knightmares looks amazing! Thanks for bringing this up — I hadn’t discovered it yet. I love the blend of humor and realistic horror. Let’s definitely add this to the awesome possibilities pile.

@Bryn Hagan Indeed! The writing is pretty spectacular and it’s such an original plot. Excited about it. :)
Bryn Hagan · Author · added over 7 years ago
Not that I would ever blow my own trumpet, but I review Wrestletown a while back, and stated this was well written and could do real well.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
@Avalon Marissa Radys  Thanks for the info the update! Very helpful. I most certainly am very disappointed to hear about abuse surrounding Tantalus Depths and would love any additional info once it becomes available.

As far as other books are concerned, I am pretty excited about The Knightmares by @G. A. Finocchiaro. He did an awesome write up on my blog about his book which folks can read here:
The Knightmares has 45 days left, so it would be a perfect time to take a look at them for syndication.

What are other people’s thoughts?

Avalon Marissa Radys · Inksharesian · added over 7 years ago
@Jamison Stone Thanks for your thoughts! With all of the restructuring this month it’s been a little hectic in terms of managing the staff syndicate and we’re excited to get back to being able to have it be more of a community discussion!

We’re still in the midst of investigating a ton of credits abuse surrounding Tantalus Depths, and once we emerge from that, I think it would be awesome to support the book. But digging through many referral rings around the book currently makes it really difficult to justify that right now.  We extended TD’s campaign by 60 days so the author can get back to campaigning and find momentum.

We’d love to hear more projects you guys are interested in for next month and the months to come. Anything else on your radar?
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 7 years ago
So, I guess we have a new book? Ummmm congrats to @Christopher Irvin ?

WRESTLETOWN looks cool, and I guess I’m excited to read it--actually I’m not yet because I know nothing about it or why it was chosen, or what is happening with this syndicates or syndicates in general...

I liked having discussion around the books which were chosen--like we have been doing in the past for every other book chosen--and felt that Tantalus Depths had some pretty strong support and discussion surrounding it.

If the "staff" don’t want to support TD when all other people seem OK with it, I think there should be discussion and a reason as to why another book was chosen. But regardless of TD, I feel that there should be talk about the books staff are thinking about choosing here--I don’t want to get a random email stating that I have bought a new book I know nothing about.

If that’s how it’s going to be in the future, then I am happy to leave I guess. (It’s why I left Garry’s Syndicate--no community interaction from leaders = no community.)
Regina McMenomy, Ph.D. · Author · added over 7 years ago
I am totally on board with Tantalus Depths! Evan is an amazing author and a truly supportive member of the community. He’s run a great campaign and I’m delighted to help support him getting to full funding.
Kevin O’Coffey · Author · added over 7 years ago
Tantalus Depths has my vote as well. There’s world building, then there’s @Evan Graham levels of world building! As others have observed, his story brings to mind the best Ridley Scott works, and of course, Arthur C. Clarke. A well deserving project to get the full publishing treatment!
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added over 7 years ago
Yes! Count me in for Tantalus Depths! Would love to see this book get the boost.

Hi folks. I thought I’d jump in this month with an author that has been hugely supportive of many of us over a long period. Evan Graham’s Tantalus Depths is not only an excellent read, but the book is nearing the end of its funding period. It’d be awesome if we could kick Tantalus Depths over the line and give Evan the success he deserves!
Bryn Hagan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Thanks Fred, and I have to agree with you about building friends and helping others is paramount. I’ve come to the stage where I try to be as big a help to people as I reasonably can, which means doing serious reviews when asked and giving quality feedback.  Of course I’d love my work to do well and to make the cut, but I’m happy when others do as well.
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@Bryn Hagan  I can only give you MY reason for being in this syndicate. Sure, at first I thought about how cool it would be to  be the syndicate’s monthly selection, I think we all do. But indeed there are many, many deserving projects out there. The chances that I will be picked, I realize, are very small.

But I chose to participate in this syndicate, and others, for what I believe is the true nature of the thing. Syndicates are vehicles for promoting camaraderie, mutual support, a great community of authors and readers. When I got myself and my desires out of the equation, it felt really good. Spiritually, I believe generosity and gratitude are way better than a lustful wanting. I know my $10 a month are going to a really good cause. And in the end, I think we all profit. It’s the way of the universe: what goes ’round comes ’round!

I did NOT want that to come out preachy. It’s just how I feel.
Bryn Hagan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Sincere advice needed. Ok guys, so I’m wondering if I’m in the right syndicate. I chose this one because the CEO is in this one and says that he looks out for the unusual and under dog types of works, as well as start ups. Can anyone explain what ’startups’ are? Plus I wonder if memoir can still do okay in this forum. I’m also looking at the Idiosyncraticate syndicate as an option.

Your thoughts appreciated.
Bryn

Ok, just took a look at Devil’s Call, and I hate to say it, but I really like it. The reason I ’hate’ to say it, is because I like so many of the authors on here, and am regularly impressed by the quality of writing as well as the novel ideas, that I feel my opinion can’t really mean that much when I seriously like so much of the work on here.
Good call with Devil’s Call.
J. Danielle Dorn · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Oh my gosh, I wasn’t prepared for this. It’s humbling to have so much recognition within the community, and I am beyond grateful for the boost this gave my preorder count. Thank you so much for the help.

Time is running out for Jason Chestnut’s "To Live and Die in Avalon".  It looks to be a fun filled classic space adventure!  If you got ’em throw some credits his way.
Stephen Carignan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
And I can’t thank everyone enough for the support!
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 8 years ago
Excellent point, Peter! And Joni has been really working hard.  "And The Wolf Shall Dwell" would also make a great choice!
Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Probably tending towards @Stephen Carignan’s Sleeping Man as well. Though @Joni Dee’s And the Wolf Shall Dwell is still 40odd places away from the 750 mark with 18 days to go. He could probably do with the support after the Brexit and everything ...
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 8 years ago
I voted to push The Sleeping Man over the Quill line and make Stephen Carignan a very happy man.
It’s actually not so easy to choose- so many great stories deserving to reach Quill!
Bryn Hagan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I have to agree with Penny about The Last Faoii by Tahani Nelson. It’s worth 3 minutes to read her sample, even just appreciate some good writing. She has started right in thick of the action (a battle) which is always a true test, as it can grip the reader immediately, but doesn’t just show the good, but the bad and the ugly. There was no bad or ugly here. A smoothly gripping start.  - not sure such words an be used in the same sentence, so just take a look a see what I mean.
Penny S · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Can I suggest a book, too? You might all decide that it’s not right for the syndicate because it’s too far from either goal to get pushed over the line immediately, but Tahani Nelson just put up a new excerpt for The Last Faoii and it’s awesome!

Also, for what it’s worth, I really REALLY like Sleeping Man.
William Schiele · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I’m partial to the Sleeping Man. I think the concept of a story within a dream is captivating and well written.  It takes imagination to have a world inside the narrator’s head as the setting for the story.  I would like to see this book make Quill and I think Stephen’s talent will be the font of more great stories to come.
Stephen Carignan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I’m not torn, I’ve already pre-ordered Tantalus Depths, but I haven’t pre-ordered my own book, so....

Just kidding, mostly, I’m just thrilled to be recommended for the syndicate pick and thrilled to have the support of the Inkshares authors. We will both still be funding around the time of the next Syndicate pick, so it’s really up in the air, but just to be considered means so much to me. Thanks!
Jamison Stone · Author · edited almost 8 years ago
Hello fellow CEO Syndicators!

Two books submitted for consideration below, both of whom have posted on my blog (if you have not read these guy’s blog postings I HIGHLY suggest you do, each  offers a really wonderful glimpse into their worlds, writing styles, and inspirations! And they are just great reads!)

Tantalus Depths by @Evan Graham
http://apotheosisstudios.com/blog/2016/6/23/tantalus-depths-guest-post-by-evan-graham-inkshares-author

Tantalus Depths is at 349 orders and could use a boost to get him closer to 750, and Sleeping Man is at 230, so we could push him over the edge to quill.   Sleeping Man has 81 days, and Tantalus Depths has 54, days.
Brian Fitzpatrick · Reader · added almost 8 years ago
Hey gang.  So I’m liking Carignan’s The Sleeping Man, but I also keep coming back to Devil’s Call.  I’m torn because our support will definitely push Sleeping Man over the Quill mark, and that’s awesome!  But at the same time, a boost of our size will give Devil’s Call a much needed shot of adrenaline.  I’m sure I’ll add more later.  And thanks again for all the support for Mechcraft! I’m thrilled to have made Quill!
Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Welcome, Bryn! This is a great syndicate to be a part of.
Bryn Hagan · Author · edited almost 8 years ago
hey guys, just joined my first syndicate, so hello everyone.
I realise my book The Bully Book, does not really fit this genre, but it’s the closest fit I can find. But more importantly, I want to get to know people better at Inkshares. I get so many requests from people and recommendations, that I feel a bit guilty for not being able to answer them all and truly keep up. So, hoping to create some friends here, oh, and if my book does well, that’s a bonus.
Brian Guthrie · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I’ll likely add another for consideration later, but I don’t disagree with @Stephen Carignan’s book being the next pick.  He’s a great author and a great member of the community

Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 8 years ago
It might be a tad soon to be considering next month’s selection, but here goes.

Even though @Stephen Carignan will smash past the Quill bar with his book, "The Sleeping Man," I wish to support a fine man and a fine book with a goal of full funding. I especially want to support a person who himself has shown support for SO many others on Inkshares.

There are many worthy projects out there. Selections are becoming more and more difficult, but Stephen has my vote.

I continue to cast my vote for Mechcraft first.  After that I would recommend The Test by Tabi Card and then Devil’s Call.  In that order.

Terminus was last time, right?
Tal M. Klein · Author · added almost 8 years ago
My vote’s for Terminus, especially since another syndicate I’m in has already backed Mechcraft as our June selection. #spreadthewealth
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I am also in support of @Brian Fitzpatrick ’s Mechcraft. It is an interesting concept, very well written, and our Syndicate’s support would go a long way towards helping Brian and his work achieve Quill status.

I like it when we can make this sort of difference in support of excellent writers! :-)
Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@J. Danielle Dorn ’s Devil’s Call look very interesting and I’d love to read more, had not heard about it until you mentioned @Jeremy Thomas -- a fantasy western sounds awesome!

Mechcraft
by @Brian Fitzpatrick looks great, too, and I have already pre-ordered, but it seems to already be on everyone’s radar already.

Devil’s Call
does not yet seem to have any real exposure and I’d love to see more people looking at it.
Brian Guthrie · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I also support Mechcraft for the choice this month.
Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Greeting all! Both are great books, but I’m still a fan of Brian Fitzpatrick’s Mechcraft at this stage. Particularly as his funding  period ending is marching ever closer.  There’s a little more wriggle room in terms of time with the other two.
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I agree with Elena. The premise is great, the chapters are well written and the author’s story is quite moving. I already bought it, but I give my vote to support it further.

Elena Stofle · Inksharesian · added almost 8 years ago
I like Seven Days Dead for June, it’s fantastic and a total underdog.  The writing is really compelling and it’s such an exciting story line. The first 6 chapters are up if you are interested.
Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Both Terminus and Devil’s Call look like fine books, but I also think about the authors behind the books. I’ve pre-ordered both of these as well as Brian Fitzpatrick’s Mechcraft. It was Brian that got back to me to say thanks for pre-ordering. As a result I’ve got to know him and realize how hard he’s working to be successful. The person, as well as the book, factor into my still supporting Mechcraft :-)
Jason Chestnut · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Both look good, but I’m leaning more toward Terminus. I do love a good western though and Devil’s Call is an interesting dark twist on the genre.

In other words, @Jeremy Thomas it’s your call, I’ll be happy with either choice!
Richard Saunders · Author · added almost 8 years ago
On the positive side, either one of these will be a selection that I hadn’t already pre-ordered, something I had done for all of the other selections and most of those who approach Quill or need help getting over 750.

Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@Jeremy Thomas follow your heart! I think both look good!
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added almost 8 years ago
my vote is for Terminus. But if it is not chosen I will pre-order it either way. I am very intrigued by the premise so either option sounds good to me.

Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
If the field is still open, I’d like to re-throw Brian Fitzpatrick’s Mechcraft  into the ring. It’s a top read and is in that middling ground between the initial surge of orders and kicking over to Quill. Brian’s put in the hard yards to get some initial traction and it would be great to see him get a deserved boost.
Ricardo Henriquez · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I may be a little late to this discussion but my vote is for Terminus

Brian Guthrie · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I agree with @Richard Saunders
Richard Saunders · Author · added almost 8 years ago
BTC received the surge of support it deserved and reached Quill without needing our assistance!

In keeping with my philosophy, I happily withdraw the nomination with prejudice for this month.
Jason Chestnut · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I have supported Beyond the Code already as well, but if that’s what everyone decides, I’m all for it. It is definitely worth it.
Peter Ryan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I Like Brian Fitzpatrick’s Mechcraft for similar momentum reasons. He’s got 58 days left and is around the 170 mark. A boost right now would move him in the right direction.
Brian Guthrie · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I have already supported Beyond the Code but it has my vote.  More punch for our backing it.
Stephen Carignan · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I like the idea of the carrot at 500, and while I don’t know if this is feasible, could 500 be paperback with the light editing and 750 be hardcover with the full editing?
Richard Saunders · Author · edited almost 8 years ago
Until we show evidence that the Syndicate is "an influencer" that can generate the significant level of buzz needed to actually help an underdog take off, that strategy is premature, imnsho. I love the Idea, but we’re not there yet.

As evidence, notice that the books we’ve backed so far have not seen that much of a boost following their selection by The CEO Syndicate. Every one of them is still under 300 pre-orders.

It’s just idle speculation, but Quill appears to have created a stagnation point, due to the daunting and imposing gap between 250 and 750. I suspect that many authors resign themselves to being satisfied with Quill and take their feet off the gas after reaching Quill. Potential backers see this and it seems to create a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

Perhaps some Interim. attractive Carrot for reaching 500 might alleviate that situation and give authors a reason to keep pushing hard after crossing the Quill line. Getting to 500 then gives motivation to go all out for 750, which at that point seems reachable.

In any event, I’m a loyal soldier and this isn’t a democratic selection process, so I’m good with whatever direction Jeremy wishes to take.

Billy O’Keefe · Author · edited almost 8 years ago
I hate to choose one at the expense of others, but I loved Terminus’ premise back in 2015, and I’d hate to see it fall short again. Didn’t even realize it was funding again, so regardless of where the voting goes I’m off to get my copy.

Tal M. Klein · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@Jeremy Thomas technically we could do both. Terminus has 57 days left so we could make it next month’s selection. I’m really liking @Richard Saunders’ idea of this being the "rainmaker" syndicate.
André Brun · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@Jeremy Thomas Terminus is a good suggestion, but I believe that Beyond the code will benefit from that Syndicate push. Also Kelsey did tremendous effort bringing her campaign this far.
Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
@Jeremy Thomas I think supporting promising books which have yet to build any substantial following is a great idea, too. Would love to learn more about  @Jaye Milius ’ Terminus
Dave Barrett · Author · added almost 8 years ago
This has been my perspective on things since the beginning.  Our role should be a threshold crossing role, at least at this point.   It’s awesome how the syndicates have grown, but we’re still barely able to move the needle on the 750 book target.
Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I agree @Richard Saunders . Down the road, I’d love to see hundreds of people involved in a syndicate,  in which case we can flood a book and bring it from Quill into full Ink, but at the moment, I feel we should look at books on the verge of Quill or on the verge of full Ink publishing to maximize our impact.
Richard Saunders · Author · added almost 8 years ago
William, that’s also a worthy suggestion and I’m sure we’ll discuss several others before Jeremy makes his pick.

It is my opinion that books which have secured Quill, but are hundreds of units away from 750 are not good candidates for Syndicate picks at this point in time. Bringing someone to 280 or 300 doesn’t do much to help them achieve the next threshold goal.

I believe that will change as Syndicates become larger and there are two reasons for that. The first is that the sheer numbers alone will eventually be able to boost a title by a hundred or more pre-orders. The second is that once a Syndicate crosses some point of critical mass, it will also become more of an influencer, and will attract many more customers on top of the Syndicate purchase. But we are a long way from that right now.

Since we have so many other forums and outlets to promote and tout books we like, regardless of where they are in the funding stage, it would seem more efficient to keep this forum a little more focused on a smaller, more select group where the Syndicate purchase gives us the best bang for the buck.

I recognize that not everyone will agree with my conception of how Syndicates should operate at this small stage. The track record on my opinions being correct is 50/50 at best, so I’m always willing to listen to opposing views and be swayed by sound arguments.

William Schiele · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I’m  glad to see Beyond the Code is getting attention from the Syndicate.  Kelsey Rae is a tireless promoter and a great supporter of many authors. I would also like to draw your attention to And the Wolf Shall Dwell by Joni Dee.  Joni’s story is a tale of espionage set in London. His writing builds tension and creates suspense as the stakes mount for a guy in over his head but not out of his wits. I think you’ll find it compelling.
Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I agree @Richard Saunders with  Beyond the Code so close to quill we could give it an important bump to the 250! And then @Tal Klein we can maybe take a look at  Lucky  down the line seeing that it has more time.

Buuuuut I also would like to hear what other titles @Jeremy Thomas might have his eye on, too! Any books, Jeremy, that we should be talking about / looking at? I’d love to hear your suggestions because in the past you have brought up some really great books that at least I personally had not yet seen.
Tal M. Klein · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Just to clarify: I’m fine supporting either of the two. Your logic is sound, Richard.
Richard Saunders · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I like both of these and have already pre-ordered them.

Lucky has two months remaining, so could still be a syndicate selection in June - it is a daunting 430 units away from 750 and the effect of Syndicate backing now is minimized.

Supporting BTC (only 12 days left) is a last chance effort that would guarantee Quill. We would still have the option for Lucky next month if it shows promise of demonstrating enough legs on its own to reach 750 with a little extra help from syndicates etc.

Jamison Stone · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I’ve been eyeing Beyond the Code by @Kelsey Rae Barthel for a while now, and would certainly be interested in learning more!
Tal M. Klein · Author · added almost 8 years ago
I like Beyond The Code and have supported it. As for me, I’d like to see R H Webster’s Lucky get to 750. I know she just got an extension on her Inkshares goal, and I think this syndicate’s backing would help get her a bit closer to full Inkshares publishing.
Richard Saunders · Author · added almost 8 years ago
Chiming in early with a recommendation.  Beyond The Code by Kelsey Rae Barthel.

Twelve days left and 29 units short of Quill.

This may or may not be appropriate for this forum, but in the spirit of crowdfunding great work, I am encouraging members of this group who may not have pre-ordered to help push Mike Donald’s "Louisiana Blood" over the Quill hump. He’s at 244 pre-orders with 10 days to go. Here is his link:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Richard Saunders · Author · added about 8 years ago
I don’t think that works. Sometimes I will pre-order a book early on and then pre-order it again when it needs help achieving a goal. So we don’t want to block that capability. As it stands right now, I like that the order page says "pre-order again?". That warns me that I have already placed an order - I do lose track sometimes.

Almost all of the books the Syndicate has selected so far resulted in my placing an additional order and I’m OK with that. The additional download or hard copy will be gifted away.

The option to request a refund helps close the gap for those wise people who realize that they can help more authors by using that refund or credit on another project.
Tal M. Klein · Author · added about 8 years ago
That’s a good point. Would it be difficult to build logic that prevents a Syndicate member from pre-ordering a book they’ve already pre-ordered? I could see issue compounded if multiple Syndicates back the same book too.
Stephen Carignan · Author · added about 8 years ago
I had previously pre-ordered this and I didn’t get credits...
Brian Guthrie · Author · added about 8 years ago
Great choice!  Of course as I’ve advocated for this one before, what else could I say?

Also, did anyone else get credits on the site saying they’re from the CEO Syndicate selection?  Is this them refunding my money for this month because I’d already preordered this?

Great choice @Jeremy Thomas I’m been super stoked to read @Amanda Orneck DEUS HEX MACHINA for a while now, and am really glad to hear so many other people are pumped about it too!
Peter Ryan · Author · added about 8 years ago
I’ve just been exchanging DMs with Amanda. Since she can’t access this thread, she’s asked me to pass on her deepest gratitude. In her words ’Seriously I can no longer concentrate!’ An excellent choice of book and person.
William Schiele · Author · added about 8 years ago
Congratulations to Amanda and DEUS HEX MACHINA.  This book is an excellent choice and a fantastic story which is very deserving of the syndicate’s support.  I look forward to seeing the campaign succeed and to reading the rest of her story.
Tal M. Klein · Author · added about 8 years ago
Great choice guys! DEUS HEX MACHINA earned it just based on the chapter names alone. Also, on a more personal note, this past week has literally made me dizzy. I want to thank many of the members of this syndicate for their support and encouragement.  I’m very proud to be a member of our community.
Jamison Stone · Author · added about 8 years ago
@Peter Ryan  and anyone else interested, I agree with both @Richard Saunders and @Brian Guthrie Author and feel Syndicates are not for self promotion and certainly do not want to receive a Syndicate email pertaining to each self promotion request which comes down the line. However, maybe there can be a standing rule that an author can PM (personal message) the Syndicate leader to throw their hat into the ring or something. This also could be done over in the forums

Honestly, though, I like the idea that the list is curated by us as a group, or at least by @Jeremy Thomas  because I feel like he truly has his finger on the Inkshares pulse. To be honest with you, that’s why I joined this Syndicate in the first place--to see each month some of the books he, personally, was excited about, aka that "caught his eye." I have also independently followed/purchased books based on his Syndicate suggestions even if they did not make the  final "Syndicate" cut, too.

All in all, I see this group (and other Syndicates) as places where people can discuss potential books  that we, as a group, are interested in backing as a group, not a place where I am pitched potential books by their authors who are obviously totally biased towards their own work. If you doubt that self-serving bias, then please go take a look at the best book ever written entitled RUNE OF THE APPRENTICE by Jamison Stone.  (I don’t obviously believe that, but think it proves my point.)

Also, funding authors please take note, if you want to promote your book I strongly suggest you focus on doing so outside of the Inkshares community first and foremost. If you gain traction out in the "world" people here at inkshares will take notice VERY QUICKLY. I personally check Inkshares each and every day, and as a semi-strict rule only follow/buy books which are able to bring a large number of new independent Inkshares users into our fold. While I do this for a multitude of reasons, I know deeply in my heart that the most vial thing to Inkshares’ long term success is broadening our user base of new book buyers. Likewise, the most vital thing to your personal book’s success is book buyers, and the ones here have already bought books (some of us have bought many, many books, and are pretty tapped out!) So, I highly suggest you branch out and bring some new folks into our awesome Inkshares community, and you will then be very pleasantly surprised when Inkshares takes notices and supports you wholeheartedly!

If you have any questions/comments which are not directly pertinent to this specific Syndicate, please feel free to reach out to me directly via PM or on twitter
Richard Saunders · Author · added about 8 years ago
There is a place (actually many) for self-promotion. I do not believe that fits with the mission of this particular type of group. It is also good imo, to make that clear and remove it as one of the potential motivations for joining Syndicates.

Brian Guthrie · Author · added about 8 years ago
First that was targeted at nonmembers. Second the idea here was for others to nominate your work not a self promotion thing. Write an amazing piece and your work will get nominated by someone on the syndicate
Peter Ryan · Author · added about 8 years ago
I’m still new to this, but why not pitch your work on a syndicate thread if you are a member of the syndicate? One of the driving forces behind Inkshares overall success is a willingness for authors to get out there and self promote. It seems a little strange that a forum such as this would be sensitive to someone trying to succeed. Most of us have sat in front of the keyboard and wondered what to do next. Give a fellow author a shot - it’s easy enough to ignore. And, on a personal note, having the backing of the CEO Syndicate rocks! It’s something worth chasing.
Jamison Stone · Author · added about 8 years ago
@Jeremy Thomas might want to "pin" a self-promo policy to avoid confusion for new folks.
Brian Guthrie · Author · added about 8 years ago
@Richard Saunders I agree and I believe this was addressed the last time it happened but that was a while ago.
Jason Chestnut · Author · added about 8 years ago
If the consensus is for Deus Hex Machina then I’m all for it. That book looks like the epitome of cool and I know is a fan favorite around here. But, if we are pushing for a book closer to the end of its campaign, then I’d lean more toward Tears of the Assasin.
Fernando Crôtte · Author · added about 8 years ago
This may be coming a little late and out of the blue, but CM Molisani’s "Seeking the Elephant" is worthy of consideration.
Jamison Stone · Author · added about 8 years ago
@Richard Saunders a strong 2nd on that.
Richard Saunders · Author · added about 8 years ago
I’m not sure if there is a hard and fast rule or not, but I think it will get too messy if we turn Syndicates into a forum for pitching our own works to each other. I understand that our projects are eligible for selection, but better to leave it to others to recommend it, or not.

I’m ok with it either way, but that’s my preference.
William Schiele · Author · added about 8 years ago
Fellow CEO Syndicate members, as the time to select a book to support for April has arrived I ask for your vote for Tears of the Assassin for the following reasons.

 1. It’s a damn good read.
 2. It’s very close to reaching the Quill goal
 3. It gives Inkshares an entry into the popular and lucrative Thriller market.
 4. It’s a damn good read, which is the principle reason for anything to be published on Inkshares.

Eight chapters are posted for your review and I encourage you to check them out and make Tears of the Assassin your CEO Syndicate selection for April.  Thank you.

Peter Ryan · Author · added about 8 years ago
One of the real pleasures of being part of the Inkshares community is getting to know fellow authors better. William Schiele, Tears of the Assassin, was nice enough to share this with me www.rit.edu/news/story.php?id=55159&source=enewsletter Check it out and be inspired! This book should be supported.

Hi Guys I am new member of the syndicate, Deus Hex Machina needs support but still have time before campaign ends.

On the other hand The Traveller’s Cup ends in 20ish days and need support right now, this is an awesome book , already backed by the Nomad syndicate.

thank you for your consideration
Fernando Crôtte · Author · edited about 8 years ago
Very tough choice!

Amanda Orneck’s Deus Hex Machina is simply a feast for the senses, and has more than proven its worth, IMO. She is deserving, and could use the boost.

William Schiele’s Tears of the Assasssin is a solid fan-favorite, and I count myself among them. He is close to Quill already, but also merits the honor.

Unfortunate that Project Penny went live shortly before the Geek and Sundry contest started. Anna Willoughby strikes me as a very talented young author. I expect her to fly.

Looking forward to further discussion before April10!

Peter Ryan · Author · added about 8 years ago
They’re all good (I’ve pre-ordered three of them)but I’d still go for Tears of the Assassin  for the reasons of funding time remaining and realistic potential of reaching the Quill goal. Oh  - and it’s a good read.

Just joined the Syndicate and thrilled to be here. I would love to double down on Hex Machina. Mostly because I’m utterly baffled as to why it hasn’t reached its goal yet.
Dave Barrett · Author · added about 8 years ago
Since we’re tossing out suggestions, I’d like to make the case for Amanda Orneck’s Deus Hex Machina.   I read her submission to the first Nerdist contest, and she’s got a good bit of talent.  She’s at 190 sales now, with about 2.5 months to go.  I’d love to see her get the nod for the June selection, if not earlier.
Brian Guthrie · Author · added about 8 years ago
My vote is for Tears of the Assassin.  This would put him over 250 for sure.  Plus it’s a great concept and one I haven’t already supported for once!
Billy O’Keefe · Author · added about 8 years ago
My three suggestions (if not for the syndicate pick, then for a closer look by everyone here):

1. Project Penny (https://www.inkshares.com/books/project-penny-5061 ), a hard-science book that I fear is about to get lost amid a sea of hard-science books once the new contest begins. I love everything I’ve read about this and would hate to see it get overlooked simply because it began funding already and isn’t eligible to compete.
2. Tears of the Assassin (https://www.inkshares.com/books/tears-of-the-assassin), a character-driven thriller that seems cut from a different cloth. I’d also play the video game based on the movie based on the book, but I’ll settle for getting the book made for now.
3. Stranger Miracles (https://www.inkshares.com/books/stranger-miracles). A sweet story in a genre that’s underrepresented in Inkshares’ nascent days. It’s got a big hill to climb at 29 sold with 27 days left, but I’d love for it to find its audience.

William Schiele · Author · added about 8 years ago
Welcome Jason.  Welcome also to Anna and Tal.  Your presence and participation are much appreciated.

William Schiele · Author · added about 8 years ago
I’m very grateful for Peter’s kind words and generous nomination of my book.  I greatly enjoy the time I get to spend on Inkshares. There are so many wonderful books and I wish I had time to read, review and recommend many more. I hope all of you get the chance to check out Tears of the Assassin and see if you find the plot, characters and pace to be intriguing reading.  If you do then I hope you will support me as the syndicate’s choice for April.  Thank you.
Peter Ryan · Author · edited about 8 years ago
First of all, let me thank the CEO Syndicate again for its support. I’m not there yet but without your tremendous help I’d be much further away. I know what you support means so I thought I’d thrown in my two cents’ worth for a book that is worthy of consideration: William Schiele’s Tears of the Assassin.  I’ve read the first part of his book and I love his style. I’ve also got to know him since starting my funding campaign. A good book + a decent human works for me.

William Schiele · Author · added about 8 years ago
I know I’ve already given a plug for Peter Ryan’s Sync City but at the risk of redundancy I just want to support Billy’s enthusiastic endorsement of the clever author who resides in South Korea. Let’s support Sync City.
Billy O’Keefe · Author · added about 8 years ago
I cannot emphasize enough how much I want to see Sync City get published. I was a huge fan of the book before I met the guy writing it, and I’m now a fan of his as well. I really like the God in the Shed and Blood Dawn mentions for similar reasons (two great books and two great people) but I feel an extra sense of urgency with Sync City. With 48 days to go and 117 copies to 250, I feel a boost from a syndicate could be an immense difference-maker. I’m glad that’s on the short list.

I also want to shine a light on Sarah Bryant’s The One Unspoken (72 days left, 70 ordered) and Jose Trevino’s Orin and the Skyscrapers (6 days, 56). (I realize the latter is an extreme long shot right now to get funding, but I just wanted to talk it up here so that everyone looks at it and sees what I see.)

Brian Guthrie · Author · edited about 8 years ago
I know we usually reach for quality books that are "on the cusp" of a contract. However sometimes I think we could boost an author in no man’s land aka between Quill and Inkshares full contract. In that light, I would suggest A God In The Shed (https://www.inkshares.com/books/a-god-in-the-shed).  JF Dubeau has been a stalwart member of this community and an ambassador for Inkshares unofficially for months.  He’s just under 500 books ordered. We could easily push beyond that and maybe give him some momentum to get it across the 750 mark. There are several other authors who have been amazing in this community (John Robin comes to mind) we could also look at.
Michael Haase · Author · added about 8 years ago
Excellent. Thanks for the info @Jeremy Thomas. Just completely brand new to this syndicate process. My vote is still with Peter Ryan’s "Sync City." Either that or Patrick Edwards’ "Space Tripping," but I don’t know if it is a faux pas to suggest a book in the contest...
Michael Haase · Author · added about 8 years ago
How does selection happen through this syndicate? Is there a compiled list of books we all offer and can vote upon? March 10th is around the corner, and there are A TON of great books out there that could use the boost...

I support Michael’s suggestion.  I find Peter Ryan’s Sync City to possess very well written characters, a unique depiction of the future and a very human set of circumstances that the plot conveys with grit, warmth and humor.  I believe Peter’s work deserves the support of the CEO Syndicate.  Thank you.
Michael Haase · Author · edited about 8 years ago
How do we go forward? There are only a couple of days left before a vote...am I wrong? Can we start discussing who might deserve a bump? a suggestion from me would be Peter Ryan’s Sync City...https://www.inkshares.com/books/sync-city?recommended=true any other thoughts?

Greetings CEO Syndicate members.  I seem to have caused a dust up by flagrantly and inappropriately posting regarding my own project.  I sincerely promise I will not do that again.  I have joined the CEO Syndicate and I now look forward to lively discussion and the review of books under Syndicate consideration for support.   If you are interested in the Thriller genre’ I recommend you join me and the 5 other members of the Thriller Night Syndicate.  Last month we supported Transillience by Kevin Bragg .  Thanks

I’d also point out that the two we’ve supported so far both just barely cleared the Quill publication option.  So, even getting behind a book we think from looking at the numbers is a surefire publication achieving book isn’t a guarantee of success.

Brian Guthrie · Author · added about 8 years ago
What @Richard Saunders said!  On that note, Storm of Fury has my vote.  I’ve already preordered it, but when you have as many credits as I did post the Nerdist contest, you have to spend them somehow so I went on a huge spending spree seeking out anything and everything I liked to throw support at and still couldn’t find enough to make it through it all.  lol, first world problems.

Richard Saunders · Author · edited about 8 years ago
Most of the time, nominated entries will be worthy. Choice will often rest on which project will benefit the most from being selected.

Help an already successful project approach or cross the Quill or 750 pre-order level? Or highlight and gain increased exposure for a "hidden gem"?

As this syndicate grows in size, our ability to influence others will also grow.

I would think that at our current membership level - pushing projects to a place near or over the finish line carries the most bang. Later, with more members, we will stand a better chance to jump start those hidden gems.

At that point, we leverage not only the money we donate, but could also go on a promotion binge, with each of us recommending the selected title on Inkshares and within our own social-media networks.
Jamison Stone · Author · edited about 8 years ago
I’d already taken a look at and pre-ordered Storm of Fury and Lies and Deception but not yet heard of Icarus Hadwell, TransilienceTime and Space Enoughand Toasted Fiction. After seeing your post I took a look and realized that I’d honestly be willing to give each a try. It’s hard to choose or even compare them though because they all are so unique. I feel this is a bit of the issue facing new authors and their readers, felt here at Inkshares and beyond. The complexity/paradox of choice is so staggering! I guess the only way is to just pick one and dive in! I do, however, feel badly for the books with a lower reader count. I wonder if the syndicate system can help them get some added vision. However, on the other hand, I feel that we should pick books based on their merits, not that they have low numbers. Again, the difficulty/paradox of choice!

Of the list, Storm of Fury is the only one I see making its goal (which hurts my soul...I really wanted Toasted Fiction).  As per usual, I already ordered a copy, LOL.  That’s my vote for this month.  Doing anything other will just end up getting refunded when their campaign fails.

I agree - Seven Shards - by a large margin.
Dave Barrett · Author · added over 8 years ago
To me, Seven shards is the obvious choice.  18 more orders gets her to 238 and a stone's throw from quill.  I've backed all three already, so it ultimately doesn't matter to me ;)
Brian Guthrie · Author · edited over 8 years ago
As I've backed all of those, I'm a bit indifferent on which I prefer.  I think I would again go for something that's close but not quite there.
Dave Barrett · Author · added over 8 years ago
My thoughts:

All five of those are pretty far from hitting 250, and they all have at least a month to go, so I'd put all those on the back burner until February to see if they've made any ground.  If we had to pick one of those five, my gut says support Toasted Fiction because I am so in love with that premise, but if our goal is to get someone pushed over the edge, none of those are going to do it.

I know I'm the one who asked, but now that I think on it, maybe we should wait until 1/15, and fund whichever of the S&L contest novels is closest to 250 (Bob Barker adds "without going over").  That will definitely make a difference in one of those author's lives.

Now that I think on it even more, Jeremy I'm sure you can get special database querries.  Can you pull the data for us each month as we debate to see who is near a 250/750 cutoff without a lot of time left on their campaigns?

So what's the word, Boss?  Whom we jumping on this month?
Rick Heinz · Author · added over 8 years ago
Oh the fine art of debt repayment. What all of us do every Jan after we get our holiday bills in.... ::Runs off to find bottle of wine and drown sorrows::

So who is the book that we are shooting for this month?

Good for you Joe! Always smart to re-assess priorities and make adjustments this time of year. Best wishes for continued success and Happy New Year!

I'm jumping out of this syndicate. In 2016, my wife and I are saving every penny so we can get out of debt and I can focus more time on my writing career. Best of luck to the group.

I think everyone in here already has She is the End. I don't need a third. Seven Shards gets my vote for next time if it comes up. I agree with the choice about Papercuts. Nicely done.

Congratulations to Papercuts!

There were three deserving nominees, with a case to be made for each of them. I'm just a few miles from the store in Jamaica Plain right now.

One of these days, I will stop in and congratulate them on the win - and also ask if they plan on stocking Inkshares titles! (They never answered my email query with that same question several weeks ago) I think they should have an Inkshares section!

I really like the idea of funding a book that is pre 250 so we can leverage our "power" to help get a book over the edge. Looking forward to learning more about Papercuts!

I am chock full of good questions.  Also, good call on the "notify everyone" checkbox.  I'm pretty sure people didn't really need to know that Mr. Barrett is my father.  :D

I work with A.C. in the forums, so bias. I have already the book, but I still vote to support She is the End.

I am most interested in the setting and story she has put forth. In discussions with her, she leans heavy on the characters, and I believe that will make for an excellent novel.

Though she has already hit her Quill goal, I want to the best representation and quality possible for the book. Our votes get her closer to the 750 required to receive full support, and this will benefit the work.

Oy. Don't call me Mr. Barrett. That's my father.
Richard Saunders · Author · added over 8 years ago
I will utilize the "secret ballot" option. All three are deserving.

I would probably place Papercuts bookstore in Jamaica Plain in third place - but have to disqualify myself due to an unfair personal bias. I should let them know that their local competition (Harvard Bookstore and Porter Square Bookstore) are stocking my Inkshares title and they are not! lol, that's ok, maybe my genre doesn't fit their business model even though my book's setting is in their backyard.

I'd be happy if any of these three projects garners our support, but agree with Mr. Barrett that pushing a project toward a funding goal should be a top consideration. Helping to move something from Quill to full Inkshares treatment qualifies, imo.

I see this syndicate's endorsement as (hopefully) becoming much more than just an incremental bit of polish, especially if it grows to a substantial size.

In addition to the monetary value, I hope that that the value of the "honor" of being a monthly selection will exceed the dollar support and will result in increased visibility and credibility which might in turn generate more pre-orders than the syndicate purchase.

When selecting a winner, I tend to think that personalities and thanks for being an Inkshares supporter should be decidedly secondary considerations - with the pure merit of the work being, by far, the primary factor.

I agree that AC has been a huge part of our community here, and I'm all in favor of throwing her a token of appreciation.

I have a procedural question - if she gets another 15 orders, what does that money go to?   Increased marketing/editing/design budget?  Her pocket?  Inkshare's pocket?  I never read the fine print on Quill, so maybe there's already an answer to this.

The reason I ask this is that this syndicate has a great opportunity to be the force that pushes someone over a goal line - either quill or full inkshares.  That being the case, I'd typically rather see the weight being thrown in that direction.  My thought is that so long as we're not picking crap books, overall societal utility is increased by one additional book being published over a book already being published getting a tiny incremental bit of polish.

tl;dr I really like AC, and would love to see her be successful, but if buying these books isn't going to materially affect that, we should go with someone still aiming for a goal.

As I have pre-ordered all three, that isn't a consideration for me.  Of the three, I think Seven Shards is the most likely I'd read first, followed by She is the End, and then What Happened Here.
Jamison Stone · Author · added over 8 years ago
She is the End by A.C. Weston has my vote, however, all three are most certainly worth supporting!

Also, I
just watched A.C.'s video for the first time and HIGHLY suggest everyone check it out. HERE is the direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FmeKgI090s

I vote Seven Shards, but only because I already pre-ordered A.C.'s book. :)

Quick operational question: If the syndicate sponsors a book that you have already backed, do you get 2 copies, or do you get a refund for the first purchase?
Brian Guthrie · Author · edited over 8 years ago
Terminal Magicks is another possible nominee for the month's book, since I saw people posting.

Very cool idea!!!

Haha, nice one, Jeremy. I'll take 003, then. I just hope that I don't get murdered by an individual pretending to be a KGB agent who then leaves a tag on my body that reads "Death to Spies" in Russian. Wait, or was that 004...? If so, watch out Dave Barret!

I also voted (on Goodreads) in favor of keeping the "Syndicate name."

Did someone mention anonymous numbers and code-names? It just so happens that  . . .

If you are into that sort of thing; I have openings for "Secret Agents" where you get your own double 0 number (while they last) and can choose your own code name.

@Richard Haha, yes! And it should totally be done all SEELE Neon Genesis Evangelion style, too!

I'll be apart of anything called the Syndicate. Can we all do web conferences where we scheme and plot with anonymous numbers for our membership names?

@Jeremy Sounds perfect!

What are your thoughts for funding level of Syndicated books, Jeremy? Are you thinking of books currently greater or less than 250?
Brian Guthrie · Author · added over 8 years ago
So do we make suggestions here and is this thread public?
