The Fisherman and His Wife

00:09:10 :: 00:10:00

WIFE

O! What a dolt! What
a dolt have I! What
a dolt have I for
a husband in you!

O! What a dolt! What a dolt have I! What  a dolt have I for
a husband in you!

We live in squalor
and you fish all day;
so you reek of fish
and the house reeks, too.

Then comes a flounder
(claims to be a prince!)
and - as I live and
breathe - you let him go
free without one wish,
without one thought to
your suffering wife;
long suffering in
this life of strife. You
have no sympathy!

O! What a dolt! What a dolt have I! What  a dolt have I for
a husband in you!

O! What a dolt! What a dolt have I! What  a dolt have I for
a husband in you!

HUSBAND

Flounder in the sea,
will you grant wishes
sent against my will?

FLOUNDER

A little cottage.
A great big castle.
Your wife king of all.

HUSBAND

Flounder in the sea, will you grant wishes
sent against my will?

FLOUNDER

Now, an emperor.
Now, the holy pope.
Next to be like God?!

HUSBAND

Flounder in the sea, will you grant wishes
sent against my will?

FLOUNDER

Go home. Go on home
to your old, small hut;
she’ll learn contentment.

HUSBAND

Flounder in the sea,
you I can’t repay!
(Her I hope to save.)
