Chapter 4: September 30, 2005: L

I have been walking back and forth practicing my report. I really found my stride doing all this research talking to other agencies other cities, other states. I’ve found some interesting people along the way.

This is my first time giving a report about the crime my teacher, my principal, my dean and a few other of my teachers are coming out of genuine interest, most of my mom’s department will be there, my mom; even my dad, is going to be there he took off work to be there for me. I only have to wait until 1 pm today. I’m practicing my speech and making copies of everything for everyone.

My mom and dad join me for lunch at noon, they take me out. My mom is already so proud of me and my dad is excited for this he is not really into the reports but he is proud of his little princess for making a goal and sticking to it completing her goal, that is why he is the best daddy! With a smile after lunch, we get back into the offices. The people from school and my parents are at the cubicle. The commissioner says, "It won’t be in this space, go to Board Room B."

"Yes, Commissioner."

I grab my stuff from my desk the reports are already in the board room. And I go to the boardroom. The commissioner is asking the guests, "does anyone need a pen to sign non-disclosures? If you are done pass them up please." A little bit of time passes, "Ok I got six, I need seven."

My dean responds, "Mr. Summers called off sick today because his daughter is sick."

"Very well, let’s begin. Little Flynn, as I’ve been corrected so many times, you’re up."

"Ummm, ok. Hi, everyone. I’m Leslie and Rick’s daughter. I was given this case mostly to see what I can do. I don’t know if I have enough information, I was forced to do this after school only, about 3 hours a day, so in half a work week’s time, this is what I was able to get. Our victim is unknown there was never a body found. But what did have names on it was for a Christopher Powell. He had this car with a VIN that was partials off 3 stolen vehicles in Chicago, a 99 Malibu, 1989 Ford F-150 and a 2001 Audi A4. The license plate is the reason why we are in this investigation at all, it comes back to the vehicle of a 1995 Ford Contour, which was owned by a gang member that defected from the Chicago’s Latin Kings to the Nortenos with a 6-month block of his history that he will not speak of. When I asked him about in prison, escorted by Trooper and Sergent here, thank you. He told me that he fears the organization more than he fears his gangs; anything I wanted to ask about the Latin Kings or anything to do with Nortenos he was willing to give me. But I was not to ask anything about Gamma, Alpha or anyone else involved my questioning with him did not go anywhere because most of his answers were "I don’t know what you are talking about" and my favorite, "why the fuck are the bulls making me talk to pigs about some bullshit that I don’t know anything about." I could not get him to slip up and tell me a damn thing except the code names for people are Gamma and Alpha which are both Greek letters, he was apparently in heavy communication with Mu as well.

When I started digging I could not find Christopher Powell with the social security number I was given by Allstate. The social security number did not exist any database that I was able to search internationally. But he did have a birth certificate and Passport. This guy was flying so far under the radar that he was born September 3rd, 1972. He did not graduate high school, never went to any school. Never paid any money to the IRS but he currently works at Rockit a bar in Chicago. I have been unable to get ahold of the owner or any representative for comment. It is obvious to me that this Identification is not real. But it’s also not stolen, it’s a made up identification for some other purpose and we have no body to prove otherwise. I’m sure I have more, I’m a little flustered, anything else?"

Someone from the audience, "You said the VIN number was dissected from other cars, how do you know? Did you find the original VIN number for the car in question?"

"The VIN number was placed in the places that have the VIN numbers haphazardly and each VIN number was different. We had to use the engine number since it was an original engine to find the proper VIN I just got the name last night and I did not have time to look up the name very much."

"What was the name?"

"Ignacio Peter Fernandez. Does anyone else have questions? Mom."

"I know you looked into the bar a little bit, it’s not much but tell them what you did find. "

"Nothing outstanding. A high amount of sales reported last year, they pay their employees very well. Ignacio Peter Fernandez is the owner of that establishment." I trail off a little bit,  "Now that I think about it, he actually owns a lot of property and businesses, cars."

The commissioner talks, "Laurie, you might be on to something. Do the Illinois state police know?

"I have alerted them to it but they don’t see why they need to catch a ghost of someone that to them has done nothing wrong. They are busy trying to clean up the streets of known murders, known gang bangers, getting the guns off the street. They have over 400 murders already this year and they had only 453 last year. This in comparison to our state murders which was 202 for the whole year. Their drug busts are so many in number. I don’t even want to get into that, they aren’t even close to the Mexican border and still have almost as many problems as us when it comes to drugs. But anyways looking for someone who only exists on paper, is not worth their time."

Commissioner speaks up again, "I like the work you did, feel free to continue an investigation. I’ll handle the paperwork to keep your temporary credentials up. I will have to put you under your mother’s watch, she will have this as an extra assignment low priority for her main priority for you."

My teacher speaks up, "This was well researched and this was an incredible change of pace for me. Getting to see how the work even white collar officers see. But how likely are you to choose this as your career?"

"You just watched me get a job before your very eyes. And this was a headache but I know something is wrong with this picture. I want to find out what and put a stop to it."

"Very well, I have to run Laurie, I’m already late for my next class, you got a B+. Just for the written portion write me an 3 paragraph essay about what your dad does, I have to make you wrote something I’m sorry. Just a little bit of effort will bring this to an A+ for you. "

Commissioner comes back to me with a shield with my mom’s  (and my) name and pins it over my heart, "it’s not official yet but I’ll be seeing what I can do about getting you in at 18 instead of 21 if you keep this up! I’m loving the work you are doing so far."
