"Yes. Yes. I know. I have it planned already I have three more places to go. Then I’ll be going to Phoenix as my final destination and taking a 2-week vacation there for you."
"Now can you explain again why you aren’t bringing your Malibu?"
"You want me to treat you like a cop even though you haven’t heard back from your psyche eval. No. I’m not risking jail like that."
"I don’t know if I like you keeping secrets from me."
"I’m making money and I’m not sleeping with anyone. I’ll be there in a few weeks gotta keep going east."
"Ttyl"
I call up Nathan, "hey man"
"Yo, why you calling did your current car break down?"
"Nah man, I wanted to know if my trips that I’m currently doing earned me a vaca according to your boss."
"My boss says you are doing this voluntarily. We all know you are getting less per mile but bigger risk bonus because this is your choice. He doesn’t care about your vacation."
"Well is there anything I should know about this?"
"From the day you tell us you are on vacation you have 21 days to bring the car and transfer the proper amount of money. Wal-Mart to Wal-Mart works best we know one that doesn’t check IDs if you make a password also has to be less than 2500 at a time so it will take a few days and a few different Wal-Marts. Password we want is ’Christmas’ if you change it please call me up and tell me."
"Can we go over it one more time what all I’m doing?"
"No we cannot but there is a handwritten coded message of instructions since you’re not doing just one run you are doing six in a row. And with you already on your third one you’re doing good work thank you."
"Alright sounds great. I know I have Boston, Miami and back to Chicago then I go to Arizona with a legal car."
"Yes now shut up about details, the government monitors phone calls."
"Peace bro."
"Oh and another girl here is smitten by you. After your vacation, you might want to say hi."
"Details when I’m on my way back from Arizona, please. Oh, can I get a burner phone before Arizona, please? I’ve been using my real phone for everything."
"That’s not a problem peace bro. Wish you told me that sooner I gotta restock right now."
"Peace"
I continue driving at 65 mph to not arouse any suspicion. I call the guy telling him where I am and that I’m on the way. He gives me the address of where to meet him. He likes that I’m going a consistent speed and tells me to sleep sometime in Ohio and to tell him when I park near the dinner.
It takes about two days when all is said and done. I get to the parking lot and it’s drizzling.
"Hey, I’m here what do you want me to do?"
"Wait 20 minutes, go inside and order me a cheeseburger, no onions with fries I’ll be there before the food. I’ll pay for both meals."
"Sounds good."
"What are you wearing?"
"Green t-shirt and jeans. I’m going to try to sit as far away from the door as I can."
"You’ll know it’s me just be friendly you’ll do good. I was told you are new."
I get in and order something for the two of us and tell the waitress I’m waiting for an old friend. A man walks into the diner and we make eye contact.
I get up and he comes up to me and we give each other a big hug and we sit in our booth. Our food comes out and we are just talking like friends that haven’t seen each other in a while.
Near the end of the meal things change he starts speaking in code "so how much green is your car worth?"
"About 34k." I put my keys on the table "how much work did you put in your car?"
"It was a job and a half but I got done with 40 hours and I’m still paying off the principle." He puts his keys on the table as well.
"How many more months do you do you have?"
"Not many after this only 6 more."
He passes me his keys across the table and I pass him mine. We go to pay I leave the tip on the table. We go to the end of the block together still pretending to be friends, "are you parked in lot B like you are supposed to?"
"Lot C because B was full."
"Well, I’m in Lot A."
"Have a good one."
"You too."
I get in his car and I start heading south out of Boston. I get about 150 miles out of Boston before its late and I’m tired so I get a hotel room.
I text who I need to the information I got from him. And I go into my backpack and find the coded message to figure out what I need to do. I will be exchanging money for ounces of cocaine which hard to come by in Chicago.
I get a coded perfect thank you and I go to bed. Over the next few days, I make another car exchange for drugs and I return to Chicago cargo intact and unused.
I report in with Nathan, "you quick man."
"Nah, bro. I took my time even slept in motels out of my own pocket."
"Then why were you so fast?"
"4 days on 4 days off to keep heat low makes a big difference."
"Yeah, you’re right, you’re right."
"So what kind of car am I getting? "
"We just bought this one, 2005 Prius. You will need no gas."
"No gas? Seriously?"
"Well some but its like 600-mile tanks"
"Holy crap! That’s like double to triple the distance of these other cars."
"Yeah I know, that’s what we want to switch to eventually to save money. You get to be the first to drive it. I hope you like it."
"Thank you."
His phone starts to ring, "what do you mean you crashed. Slow down, slow down."
I hear over the phone "get on the ground!"
"Did you hit a cop car? -And I’m your phone call!?" He hangs up. "Dan don’t leave yet, please."
He goes into the kitchen and puts the phone in the microwave and puts it on for 4 minutes. "Yup I know what is going on. Oh, what about the burner phone I asked for?"
I send out a text to everyone I have on my phone that’s a part of the company "burn notice, new phone".
I toss my phone in there as well.
"I’ll be right there to get it out I need to stay here in case it catches fire."
"Are phones in a drawer?"
"Yeah middle drawer in the dining room."
"I’ll grab two."
"Thank you."
I start going through the process of registering and going to websites I know making it feel like my old phone that I just nuked. I also email everyone in this network my number through drafts in the ghost email so nothing ever gets sent.
While I’m doing that I start working on my burner phone it doesn’t have as much work needed to it. I also message Laurie, "224-989-5928 Since I’m going to be with you for a few weeks you should have my number."
Nathan comes out of the kitchen wearing gloves. "Microwaved, water cooled, bleached and hammered. Would you mind putting on these gloves as you handle this bag to throw it out far away from here?"
I get a call as I’m putting on the gloves I give him a thumbs up as I take the bag, the keys and answer the phone. "Hey, how’s out going?"
"Oh my God, it’s really you?!"
"Umm yeah. Who else would it be? "
"I love your voice. It’s so much better than I imagined."
"This is normal speaking."
"Can you sing?"
"I’ll let you be the judge if you’re thinking karaoke."
"Well, now I am."
