18 - Peter - Significance, the Lifeblood of Want and Desire

As children, we see the world and all the things inside of it as significant, so much so that everything seems wondrous and full of magic. From the tiny ants in their ant hills to the birds that gracefully soar through the bright blue sky. However even as children, we seem to forget the significance of these small wonders and look to the next curious thing.

We develop a detachment from the things we once adored. Why would such a beautiful and new thing lose its luster? Has it changed? Has it become ugly?

The answer is no. We change. Flowing from one significant thing to another, we begin to want a better or more significant thing. In this developing of the mind, we continuously run through what we have building an expectation and hope for better.

Unfortunately, we get to the point where some of the most breathtaking and awe-inspiring things we could have never imagined as a child lose their charm. But we keep going, we keep moving, we keep discovering until there is no more. No more wonder.

No more significance. That is where we begin to question the universe. Did someone make me? Or was the entirety of the human race born out of nothing, little more than an accident.

The definition of the word significant is: sufficiently great or important to be worthy of attention; noteworthy. What is worthy of attention? Well, this depends on what we believe as human beings. Generally, things we put more attention into are things we like to do such as hobbies and other activities. However, we also put attention onto what god we believe in or the method in which the earth came into being. As Christians, we look towards God and put much of our attention on him seeing the significance of him.

Without God what significance is there in the things around us? I believe that a lot of the things we see as significant are what God sees as significant considering that we have the mind of Christ. It’s because God sees significance in us and the world around us that things can be significant. In Genesis chapter one we see God forming the earth and he always calls his creation good, which I see as the placing of significance into those specific things.

And after all of these questions what do we get? We get our value and our significance. God loves you and he sees you and your life as significant. Unfortunately in beliefs such as evolution there is nothing that shows our significance, we are an accident. But God is continuously thinking about us and our significance .

The King of Kings sees you as significant and worthy of attention! He gave us the ability to see something or someone as significant. The most important thing about the word significance or significant is how it pertains to us. Many people believe they are insignificant, believing that they are not special. This couldn’t be further from the truth! Everyone is significant and worthy of attention because that’s how God sees every one of us.

So the next time you feel that you or something you did is insignificant, remember that God thinks that you above all things is the most significant thing to him.
