Craig A. Munro liked an update for U-Turn at Next Synapse

It has been an emotional last couple of days. At 2:30 AM on Thanksgiving Day, I have looked over my final interior design layout, the final cover is in the works, and my publishing day is fast approaching.

I am also in shock and awe that I was selected as the November Syndicate Pic for the Next Great Sci-fi of the 21st Century. There, I find myself with past inductees: The Punch Escrow, Dracula Vs. Hitler, and former Nerdist Collection Contest Winner, Welcome to Deadland.

I truly feel like I am in another time and place. This book has been such a personal, long fought, often leading to a detriment in health, and spiritual journey. The list of people to thank is too long for one post and I do not feel that it properly marks how important each one of them are. This of course brings along all those who have followed, shared, and snagged their own copy, most of who are currently reading this update. Right. Now.

As we approach the big day, I ask you to tell others of this crazy written out graphic novel (because this guy can’t draw) broken into two stories written and occurring simultaneously--because I like to make things easy on my self.

Thank you all, and if you have not yet hopped into the driver’s seat, I suggest you take your seat, for this race is just getting started.

Checkmate and Rummy my dear gladiators,
CoRy

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Disintegration

    It’s been a long time.

I haven’t had much to say, so I’ve laid off bombarding you with updates that contained no news. However, a few months back, I was told that Inkshares is ready to begin producing Disintegration.

I was overjoyed at the news, as it’s been quite a long road, but the road is yet longer. Alas. Inkshares has asked that I pare by 50,000 words the manuscript I submitted. This is no small feat. I managed to trim 20k by eliminating some character backstory and world-building, by sacrificing some parts that I felt were illuminating but weren’t essential to the overall plot. But another 30k remain to be pared. And that task is much more daunting.

Of course I’m in love with my own words, but I do realize that they’re not all golden and they’re not all necessary. That’s why the first cut was relatively easy. I want the story to be full and rich and chock with the kinds of connections and background that make it an epic, immersive experience, but the logistics don’t really allow that, since this is my first commercial book. The business of books asks "Who the hell is this?" of an unknown author, and "Why the hell is his book so long?"

Inkshares believes that my book will have wider appeal if it is narrower of width. That perhaps a skinny spine might entice a casual reader to pick it, on a whim, from a bookshelf ... where a fat one would not. I would like my book to be published, so I accede. Or, I am attempting to. It’s been slow going because I’m a full-time public school teacher and a graduate student and my "free" time is the time I spent looking at the backs of my eyelids.

But the book is coming. A version of it, anyway. A heavily abridged version that will, I hope, be a leaner, meaner, quicker, punchier version than my originally submitted draft. It’ll be such a rousing success, flying off bookshelves due to its striking black and red, and thin, spine, that the big, fat, unabridged version may well follow due to overwhelming demand.

A man can dream. And, while this man dreams, he is working on paring a novella’s worth of words from Disintegration so, like a boxer, the book meets its target weight and is ready to fight for science fiction supremacy.

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Mission 51

      Quick update-

The 94,200 word Mission 51 manuscript delivered to Inkshares is currently waiting its turn in the editing queue. I am told it may be after the first of the year before the Inkshares staff can "dive into it." - I think I can hold my breath that long!

Meanwhile, Mission 51 got a little press on Nerdist:

Craig A. Munro liked an update for The Silent Scream of Melania Trump

Hello readers, followers, and pre-orderers of The Silent Scream of Melania Trump,

Inkshares informed me this morning that the staggeringly beautiful work of art that is The Silent Scream did not meet its funding goal. Those of you who pre-ordered copies will be refunded by Inkshares.

I choose to believe that every venture, whether successful or not, is worthwhile in some way. Through this campaign I learned lessons about fundraising, project management, and most significantly that there are over 100 people out there who are willing to champion my work. Some of you surprised me, popping back into my life after many years to cast your pledge. But be you old friend, current pal, or mysterious patron, I am honored to have your support. Thank you for pre-ordering, retweeting, and plugging on your podcast/Facebook walls.

        So what’s next?

NaNoWriMo provides a really great impetus for continuing to revise and refine the book. I intend to sand away some of the rough edges and then pitch it again. In the meanwhile, I will begin writing a passage for Our Fair City’s forthcoming art book (likely to release in 2018). And I will continue to publish new episodes of Blastropodcast and Muffed Movies every month.

I’m not going to lie - for the moment, I feel crestfallen. But I remain hopeful, and I am happy in the knowledge that it is the process, not the product where the tastiest grubs like to huddle. I have more grubs to unearth before I can put a book in your hands. Thank you for your patience.

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Tantalus Depths

One third of the way through NaNoWriMo and I’ve come to a revelation about myself: I don’t like editing.

It’s a whole different world from writing, and trying to pick apart a story you’ve written already and piece it back together in a way that works better is a phenomenally headache-inducing process. It’s necessary, and the results of the process will speak for themselves in the end, but gosh is it exhausting.

I wish I could say I’ve made a lot of progress on Tantalus Depths already, but it’s been very slow going. Most of the editing I’ve done so far has been in the form of outlining rewrites on problem scenes and trying to boil the entire story down to specific thematic elements so I can increase the consistency in theme and tone throughout. It’s slow but crucial work, and hopefully it’ll make the remainder of the process move much more smoothly.

To keep myself creatively inspired while working through the frustrating and tiresome work of editing, I’ve been doing a decent amount of work writing Proteus as well. Since the beginning of NaNoWriMo, I’ve managed to work through about a bit over a dozen pages in Proteus, and about two full chapters. I’m definitely not up to the recommended word count for NaNoWriMo, but since I’m dividing my attention between writing and editing, I feel like it’s a fair bit of progress.

My plan is to try and get the first half of Tantalus Depths edited by the 20th of the month, finishing it by the end of November. Somewhere in there I’d like to knock out another half-dozen chapters of Proteus if possible, but that remains a secondary priority.

Hopefully my next update will be an encouraging one. Back to work I go!

Craig A. Munro sent an update for The Bones of the Past
Lots more happening this week - The eBook for The Bones of the Past has seen a significant (and permanent) price cut! It’s now listed at $3.99 in the US and $5.00 in Canada!

Also, on December 19th, the audio book will be available on CD in stores and online! It’s a great option for those of you who haven’t been tempted by an Audible subscription. The strangest thing about it all? The book on CD is significantly cheaper than the digital download (literally half the price!).

Work continues on the Tide of Madness. I went through a short burn out phase in late October/early November and progress slowed down somewhat, but I’m rested and back at it now. I’m planing to have a new teaser posted on my Inkshares page and my website sometime in January. I’m taking a week off work so I can lock myself in and get some serious writing done as well as edit and clean up the new teaser chapter(s). There is some absolutely insane stuff happening in this book - the characters keep going off and doing things I had never planed on before but somehow it all ends up working far better for the story.

Thank you all for your patience - it’s going to be worth the wait!
