How to Decarb Your Marijuana

The decarbing or otherwise known as the decarboxylation of marijuana is the process of activating the THC, cannabinoids & other marijuana byproducts through the process of removing the carbon atoms from the marijuana. The process of decarboxylating marijuana can be used for butter, oils, tinctures, and foods that will not be cooked over 340 degrees Fahrenheit.  There are several methods for decarbing your buds, however, we will solely be focused on the decarbing process using the oven method.

Kitchen Tools required:

  • An Oven Thermometer (to ensure precise heating)
  • Oven
  • Sharp Grinder
  • An Oven Safe Dish
  • Aluminum Foil

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz of marijuana

Directions:

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to variances that occur over time to even the nicest of ovens please make sure to use a new or newer oven thermometer to ensure you are not exceeding 220 degrees Fahrenheit as this will kill the potency in your marijuana.
  2. Next grind your marijuana to the consistency of how you would grind your weed for a blunt or joint. You do not want your marijuana to be too fine or too course, we want a happy medium here. You can grind your weed after its been decarboxylated however, I feel like pre-ground buds allows for a more potent end product. After your buds are ground you’re going to spread out all your herbaliciousness onto an oven safe pan and tightly seal with the aluminum foil.
  3. Bake that sheet of green beauty in the oven for 2 hours @ 220 degrees Fahrenheit.

*Please Note: the 2 hour bake time is based off using 1 single ounce of marijuana, if you are using 2 ounces of weed you will need to bake it for approximately 4 hours.

The Marijuana Decarb Equation

2 Hours x How Many Ounces of Bud = Bake Time

Once your buds are done baking, allow the oven dish to cool down completely BEFORE removing the aluminum foil.

Your marijuana is now completely decarboxylated, full active and ready to use in any type of recipe. Enjoy!

  6. When your cannabutter is finished in the crock pot, pour the cannabis-butter into the bowl or container filtering out all of the plant material in your cannabutter. Squeeze out any remaining butter from the cheese cloth. Your hands will be dripping in cannabutter so prepare yourself in any way you see fit. If cooking for others please use latex free rubber gloves.

Important Information:

When dosing it is strongly suggested that you start off with one teaspoon cannabutter so you can see what your base high will be like. Use this test dose to decide if you should ingest more than 1 teaspoon at a time.

Never allow your cannabis butter to exceed Low to medium heat as the THC will degrade due to high heat killing your cannabutter potency.

You can use salted but unsalted is strongly suggested particularly if you are using the cannabutter for baking.

Potent AF Cannabis Infused Butter Recipe

This recipe is the one I followed my first time ever making cannabutter. I made the novice mistake of not covering my buds with aluminum foil when I was decarbing my ground buds. If you don’t cover your buds with aluminum foil the flavor and potency will escape making your decarboxlyated marijuana less potent. I watched my cannabutter barely simmer and nervously adjusted knob on the stove from the low to medium low heat on my gas stove sometimes making the cannabutter bubble a little too much for a few seconds. I put a teaspoon or 2 or 3 in some hot chocolate, smoked a bowl and waited. After 2 hours I was feeling the cannabutter effects, after 4 hours I took a nap & after 8 hours I was back to a clear reality and ready to smoke again. My end result was some seriously potent cannabutter that I had made into a hole slew of tasty recipes that all my friends loved.

Serving Size: 0.5g per serving

Serves About 60

Prep Time: 30 minutes

Cook Time: 5 Hours

Smell Rating: High AF

Difficulty: Simple

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce or 28g decarboxylated finely ground cannabis or 2 ounces decarboxylated leaves, stems or trim or 4 ounces pre-vaped cannabis
  • 1 pound or 450-500g butter (unsalted is best for baking)
  • 2 cups water
  • Large saucepan or pot
  • Whisk
  • Large glass bowl or storage container
  • Cheesecloth
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Rubber Bands

Directions

  1. Chop butter into cubes and place into large sauce pan with 2 cups water and bring to a rolling simmer just before it boiling over medium heat until butter is completely melted occasionally stirring to allow the butter to melt more quickly.
  2. Once the butter has melted add the ground cannabis and reduce the heat to low, bringing your mixture to a slow simmer. Do Not Allow Your Mixture to Boil! Your mixture should have little movement with a bubble here and there.
  3. Leave your mixture on a slow simmer for 5 hours stirring every hour or so.
  4. During this time prepare your filtration system by double folding your cheesecloth and placing on top of your large bowl or storage container holding in place with rubber bands.
  5. After the cannabis and butter have simmered for 5 hours pour over the cheesecloth into the bowl or storage container filtering out the cannabis plant material from the butter. Remove the cheesecloth and squeeze the butter from the rest of the cannabis plant material.
  6. Cover the bowl or storage container with plastic wrap and refrigerate so the cannabutter may solidify. We suggest letting the cannabutter refrigerate overnight but you can get away with using the cannabutter after its been refrigerated for 3 hours.
  7. Once the butter has solidified, pour off the excess water and remove the cannabutter from the bowl and into a lidded glass jar for proper storage.

Important Information:

Storage Tip: Wrap your cannabutter in plastic wrap or an airtight container and you can keep it in the fridge for a few weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

You can use salted but unsalted is strongly suggested particularly if you are using the cannabutter for baking.

Cannabis Infused Oil - Cannaoil

Cannabis Infused oil is an essential products in any stoners kitchen and the quality of oil used should be as important as your quality of buds. While I don’t suggest it, you can use any oil you so choose even canola oil.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce/28g decarboxylated finely ground cannabis or 2 ounces decarboxylated leaves, stems or trim or 4 ounces pre-vaped cannabis
  • 6 cups of oil (coconut, olive, grapeseed or sunflower)

  1. In a large saucepan heat the oil over low heat.
  2. Stir in the cannabis.
  3. Leave your mixture on a slow simmer for 3 hours stirring every 30 minutes.
  4. During this time prepare your filtration system by double folding your cheesecloth and placing on top of your large bowl or storage container holding in place with rubber bands.

How to Decarb BHO

The decarbing, otherwise known as the decarboxylation, of BHO is the essential process of activating the non-psychoactive THC-A to the psychoactive THC. Decarboxcylated BHO can be used for tinctures & foods that won’t be cooked over 340 degrees Fahrenheit, or for butters & oils. This is a great alternative for someone who isn’t a fan of the strong cannabis flavor that cooking with buds and trim causes.

Kitchen Tools Required:

  • An Oven Thermometer (to ensure precise heating)
  • Oven
  • Silicone Mat or Wax Paper
  • An Oven Safe Dish
  • Aluminum Foil

Ingredients

  • 1 gram of BHO

Directions

  1. Start by preheating your oven to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Due to variances that occur over time to even the nicest of ovens please make sure to use a new or newer oven thermometer to ensure you are not exceeding 220 degrees Fahrenheit as this will kill the potency of your BHO.
  2. Put your silicone mat in an oven safe dish
  3. Place the BHO on the silicone baking mat. Please be mindful when doing this as the concentrate will thin out and expand possibly causing the wax to ooze off the mat.
  4. Cover with aluminum foil
  5. Place the BHO in the oven for 20 minutes
  6. After 20 minutes turn the oven off and allow the BHO to completely cool in the oven.
  7. Once the BHO is completely cooled it should be gooey and sticky
  8. Place the cooled wax into the freezer for 10 minutes so you can easily remove the BHO from the silicone mat.
  9. Your BHO is now decarboxylated, or “activated” and ready to be ingested or used in recipes

Important Information:

When dosing it is strongly suggested that you start off with a very small dosage (around 0.05) so you can see what your base high will be like. Use this test dose to decide if you should ingest more than 0.05g or less at a time.

Stoner Strategies holds no accountability for irresponsible cannabis users. Taking too much can ruin your entire day and make you freak out or sleep.

BHO Infused Butter & Oil

BHO infused butter & oils are an essential product in any stoners kitchen. Only using high quality non-GMO, coconut oil and butters allows my BHO infusions to come out potent af. If you’re making a BHO infusion for medical reasons coconut oil is strongly advised.

When dosing it is strongly suggested that you start off with a very small amount so you can see what your base high will be like. BHO infusions are usually much stronger than your typical cannabis infused butters & oils. Use with caution.

Dosage Equation:

A typical Amount of BHO in Each Individual Recipe Serving is About 0.05

Recipe Servings x Per Serving Dosage = Amount of BHO Necessary for Your Recipe

Example: 20 servings x 0.05g = 1 gram of BHO

Ingredients:

  • 1 gram BHO decarbed
  • 2 teaspoons butter or coconut oil

Cooking Tools:

  • Large saucepan or pot
  • Whisk
  • Large glass bowl or storage container with air tight lid

Directions:

  1. Heat your coconut oil over a low heat until completely melted
  2. Add the decarbed BHO stirring until completely dissolved
  3. Do not allow to bubble, this will decrease the potency
  4. Once the BHO has been completely dissolved remove from heat and pour into a clean glass jar with an air tight lid.

Important Information:

Storage Tip: Wrap your BHO butter or oil in an airtight container. BHO butter and oil keep it in the fridge for a few weeks or in the freezer for up to 6 months.

When dosing it is strongly suggested that you start off with a very small serving so you can see what your base high will be like and to make an informed decision on if you should lowre or up your dosage. Use with caution!

Never allow your BHO butter/oil to exceed Low to medium heat as the THC will degrade due to high heat killing your THC potency.

You can use salted but unsalted is strongly suggested particularly if you are using the BHO-butter for baking.

Stoner Strategies accepts no responsibility or liability for the misuse of BHO, edibles or marijuana.
