Craig A. Munro liked an update for Mission 51

Earlier this year, despite some solid success, I let the Inkshares funding campaign for Mission 51 end without asking for an extension for two reasons: I wanted to focus on the writing and not on the campaigning, and I wanted to submit Mission 51 to Hollywood’s Launch Pad Competition 2016. I have to admit I was a bit disappointed it didn’t make it to the finalist group, but today I received some very strong encouragement!

I received the formal Feedback Notes from Launch Pad, essentially an opinion about my submitted sample from an industry judge. Let me give you a few excerpts from the report:

"This is a knockout premise, and those are very rare."

"The fact that Mat’s story... is an immigrant story, takes this premise from being a great high concept to being a great high concept with real emotional subtext, and one that has resonance with our modern world today."

"The pages here consistently communicate the story clearly, with great momentum, and a very palpable sense of empathy for ALL the characters... This is a great read, and a very capable execution of a highly evocative premise. This project has tremendous potential."

"The quality of the writing here, not just on the conceptual level, but also in terms of the story in these pages and the writing of that story, is uniformly strong. The dialogue’s good too, voice specific and smart in its use of subtext."

"This project feels like it has strong potential for either a TV or feature adaptation, and stands on its own as a great read as a manuscript."

Well isn’t that just awesome!!! I am greatly encouraged that I am on the right track!

Looking forward to the next suitable Inkshares contest so I can jump in and try again. I really want you to read the story!

Peace, and Happy Thanksgiving!

First, congratulations to everyone selected for The List 2016 -- very happy for all of you. There are some amazing stories there.  I have to confess, however, I’m still a little confused about how this competition and Launchpad will interact.

So, I understand from some comments here and from the FAQ for The List, that for those who are in both competitions, Launchpad "trumps" The List (for lack of a better word) and if those who are in both win Launchpad, then they are eliminated from The List.

However, if you look at the leaderboard for Launchpad right now, the three leading books have all disappeared giving the appearance that they’re no longer in the competition. So it currently shows me in the #1 spot by a single reader, which is delightful but unfortunately inaccurate.

Do those of us who are only in Launchpad need to check both competitions to figure out where we really are in the standings? Or do I clearly need some more coffee because I’m just not "getting it." (which in the week leading up to having both families at my house for Thanksgiving is ENTIRELY possible. :-))

Thanks for any clarity you can provide!

I’m hoping @Elena Stofle and @Thad Woodman will have a look at this :)

The current comment system is a great feature, but it falls over on excerpts with too many comments. Specifically, if there are too many comments too close to each other, the comments seem to get drawn over the top of each other -- hiding the ones underneath. I’ve checked the page source code and the comments are there, just not being displayed.

This is actually a really problem -- I have a couple excerpts in this situation, and I’ve had people tell me they have stopped providing feedback in frustration, as they can’t  see their comments after posting them. It is a problem for the author too, as the email notification sent out when a comment is added doesn’t provide the context for the comment (doesn’t show what they were commenting on) -- the only way to see that is to follow the link to the excerpt, but then that doesn’t work because the comment is hidden under the pile.

      Possible  Solution
One possible solution to this is something which I believe could be implemented relatively painlessly through some updates to the Javascript and CSS (for those not in IT just ignore the technobabble)...

Currently, all comments are displayed in full, and take up a lot of spaces, which is part of the reason for this problem. Instead, I would suggest when the pages loads comments are displayed as only an icon / bubble in the margin, identifying the author (and maybe the date of the comment. Hovering the mouse over the icon could display the comment in the tool-tip, and clicking on it could toggle the comment into full display, including the ability to reply to the comment etc. This would enable many comments to stack in the margin and still be accessible.

Other user interactions which would make this experience nicer would be: hovering over highlighted text could emphasize the comments linked to it (e.g. change their border colour). Hovering over comment bubbles could highlight the text commented on (e.g. change the highlight colour).

(Long update ahead, bear with me)
A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO PUBLISHING...

Hi there, friends! Family! Fellow authors! Perfect Strangers! (Points to you if you get that reference)

So the weird journey to publishing continues. Here’s a quick refresher in case you’re late to the party or if you simply forgot where we left off...

-I launched a campaign at Inkshares to publish my very first sci-fi novel, DAX HARRISON!
-With the help of reader pre-orders, I secured a light publishing deal. Huzzah! In short, Inkshares promised to publish my book to anyone who bought a copy, and continue to make it available online through all major outlets (Amazon, Barnes & Noble online, etc).
-I handed over my manuscript and have since been waiting for my turn to begin production (copy editing, review, etc).

        BUT WAIT! THE PLOT THICKENS!

Inkshares has launched a new contest titled THE LIST 2016, gathering a handful of the best projects which either did not meet their campaign goal the first time around, or only reached light publishing (like yours truly). The winners will be guaranteed FULL PUBLISHING. That means all kinds of fancy things that light publishing does not include, such as developmental editing, professional cover design, marketing assistance, and getting books into physical book stores.

Why am I telling you all this? Because the contestants have been nominated by their fellow Inkshares authors. ...And guess who was nominated.

Yep. I am officially part of this new shindig, courtesy of my fellow writers who believe in my silly stories, or maybe just like me as a person. Either way, I gotta say I’m pretty humbled.

"HOLD UP, TONY! I BOUGHT YOUR BOOK AWHILE AGO, AND NOW YOU’RE TELLING ME YOU WANT MORE MONEY?!"

No, no, no! Again, I apologize for the long wait for the book, but NO I am not asking you to buy the book again. The point of this contest is to gather unique readers above and beyond my current readers. That means fresh new folks to join the adventures of Dax. While I appreciate your support, I don’t need you to buy 10 more copies just so I win this thing. What you CAN do however, is spread the word to friends, family, coworkers, strangers in passing, anyone who might enjoy a good fun read like Dax. Just tell them to head to daxharrison.com!

Per the contest rules, the top 3 books with the most unique orders will be guaranteed the full publishing deal. There are also guest judges who will have the opportunity to select 3 more winners of their choosing, beyond the top 3. So there will in fact be 6 winners total!

"WAIT A SEC, TONY! WHAT GIVES?! YOU TOLD ME YOU WERE ALREADY GOING TO BE PUBLISHED! NOW YOU HAVE TO WIN ANOTHER CONTEST?!"

No, no, no! I assure you, I will be published and you will have your book in your hands no matter what. This contest is more of a 2nd chance for the gold. If I fail, I will simply continue on with the light publishing deal as planned. So I have nothing to lose. But if I win? Professional edits, meaning the book will be better than ever. Cover design services, so I won’t have to pay out of my own pocket separately. Marketing support, needless to say, SUPER important. And getting my book into physical bookstores. Can you imagine walking into a Barnes & Noble and seeing Dax Harrison on the shelf?! I would melt, into a puddle of joy. A puddle, I say. And then I would apologize to the cleaning staff.

Not to mention, higher sales = more incentive for my publisher to hurry up and get my book out there and into your hands! ;)

More to come soon. See ya!

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Murder at the Veterans’ Club

          EXCITING NEWS!

"Murder at the Veterans’ Club" has been selected for The List. This is a contest for book projects on Inkshares that have caught the eye of the Powers That Be--unlike other contests, participation is by invitation only. On 31 December, the three book projects with the most unique readers will win the Full Publication deal ... you know, that thing that happens when you get 750 orders.

          WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

It means that on 31 December, if "Murder at the Veterans’ Club" is still in the top three--thanks to you, we have a head start in second position--we can go into production with the Full Publication deal right then and there. It means you could get your books a month earlier than expected. It means the current focus is no longer on the great 750, but on maintaining a position at the top of the heap.

It means that people think "Murder at the Veterans’ Club" is a book worthy of note, in case you had any doubts before.

But wait! Is there any doubt that we can make it? Is there any doubt that we can maintain our position in the top three? Well ... yes. A handful of our competition are only just now starting: they’re blank slates, and anything could happen with them. The first few weeks of a campaign always see a huge spike in orders, so any one of these fresh-faced young recruits could pole-vault right over us. And then there are those veterans infused with fresh enthusiasm. We have to keep moving!

So if you’ve been on the fence before, now is the time to place your order! Stand up and be counted, because that’s the only way we can stay in the top three and make this happen!

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Deus Hex Machina

            Greetings Hexers and Machina Riders:

Do we have some things to talk about!  So much has happened in the last week my head is spinning. Let’s get right to it:

            Extra Life Stream this Evening

I’ll be streaming Heroes of the Storm tonight for the Extra Life charity over on my Twitch channel, starting at 6 PM CST and running until midnight. Come cheer me on as I main Sylvanas and try to figure out if I can still snipe towers behind enemy gates. It should be fun times.

Donate to my Extra Life fund

If you watch (and even if you can’t) help me get to $100 by donating here. I have already raised $40 for kids in need, so I’m 1/3 of the way there. Woncha help out?

            The List 2016 contest

This week Inkshares announced which books were selected for their end-of--the-year contest, and Deus Hex Machina is on The List!  It’s a crazy big honor to be among such amazing books and their authors which leads me to my next item on the agenda:

A ton more Deus Hex Machina stuff is coming

A new contest means a new campaign, so I’ve been working in the last few days to shape what a second campaign for DHM would look like. Astute readers among you will already notice I’ve updated the book’s Inshares page, refereshed my cover concept, and put up a couple new character bios. In addition I have uploaded the revised first chapter from the 2nd draft -- I think you’ll be happy with the changes.

My edit is plugging right along, and won’t stop just because another contest has popped into my life. You don’t stop feeding your kids just because extended family dropped by unannounced. You pull up extra chairs and make more desserts.

And I plan on more desserts friends. I will try to keep the updates meaningful throughout this contest, but I do have a good amount of fun stuff planned, and I want to share it all with you.

My goal for this campaign will be to get to 400 readers. It’s a huge crazy unimaginable number, but I think we can do it. If you’re following the book but haven’t purchased, I’ll be reaching out to you personally in the coming weeks to ask for your order. If you have purchased the book, I’ll be reaching out to you personally to ask for your referral.

In exchange for your support of the book I have planned more goodies: live-edits, fan art contests, a contest for the ARG -- yes Qathren YOBIBYTE got the jump on you Sombra. You got nothin’ on a hexer from the future.

It’s gonna be a fun, weird ride, and I hope you’ll join me. I’ll see you tonight.

            May the code replicate eternal.

Craig A. Munro liked an update for Blurred Weaponry (Saints of the Void, Book 1)

              Final Update

I would have done this sooner, but actually finishing the book and then immediately hitting "peak" overtime means I’m not doing much other than working.

To start, I did an audio review for Shawn Furniss’ Inkshares draft The Agoge as the first part of a two-review video, which is the first episode of something I’ll be doing which will ALWAYS include a review I did for this community. Here it be:

              https://youtu.be/9rXtcl9O6rs

Anyway, Blurred Weaponry is complete and released. The ebook is available on Amazon, iTunes, Barnes and Noble, Smashwords, yadda yadda. No links because I’m not sure I’m allowed to do that, but it’s an easy enough pair of words to search for. It’s all of $3.99, so hopefully the few of you all that supported it originally will buy it (question mark in parentheses).

And of course, as I mentioned previously, if you want a review copy, please send me a direct message via twitter (@SixelaZed) with an email address and preferred format, which should be either .epub, .mobi, PDF with bookmarks, or .doc. I worked incredibly hard and am very excited for the craziness of the next books in the series, but I don’t think I’ll sell too many, and won’t give more than 15 review copies away total. I don’t care if someone hates it or mildly enjoys it, as long as if/when a review drops, it’s honest.

To end this, I’ll post an image of my first review because I’m quite thankful (it was my beta reader, who honestly shocked me by reading it when no other person I gave early copies to bothered to do so).

I’ll be reviewing stuff for Inkshares when I am awake enough to do so, and will accompany each video version review with some fan art.

Peace out, me hearties, I’ll be around all ghost-like and whatnot, and hit me up on twitter and Facebook if you feel up to it,
