Robert Batten liked an update for Tantalus Depths

So commences the last leg of our journey to Tantalus 13...

That’s right. We’re about to go into our last three weeks of the pre-order campaign, and Tantalus Depths is currently standing at an extremely respectable 595 pre-orders. That full publishing deal is so close, I can smell it in the water.
We also hit a personal goal of mine this weekend. As some of you know, Tantalus Depths started its pre-order campaign on Inkshares as an entrant to the Geek and Sundry Hard Sci-Fi competition, wherein we came in 5th place. Well, this weekend Tantalus Depths officially passed Tal Klein’s The Punch Escrow in current pre-orders.

That’s right. Tantalus Depths now has more pre-orders than the book that won the contest Tantalus Depths lost.

Big thanks to Tal for setting that bar so high and giving me an extra lofty goal to aspire to.
If you haven’t already purchased a copy of his book, please do so. I’d be more than happy to have that bar raised above me again.

Unless I’m mistaken, Tantalus Depths is also the #1 most pre-ordered hard sci-fi book on all of Inkshares now. Another huge honor I barely feel I deserve.

There’s no time to gloat now, though. We still need those 155 pre-orders to hit that final goal (which is, officially, the last goal I have left for this campaign). Remember: when we hit 600 pre-orders, I’m releasing chapter 2 on Inkshares with another video of me reading it. That’s only five orders away right now. Let’s get there today!

Another huge thanks to all the readers, writers, and syndicates who’ve helped get Tantalus Depths where it is right now. We’re going all the way, guys. Don’t lose sight of that prize!

I’d really appreciate it if authors who spend the time reading another author’s work could highlight the text and leave a comment - specifically addressing any confusion they may be having or offering suggestions for improvement.

In my experience, I’ve probably read through 15-20 authors’ first/second chapters (and counting!), and I always leave as many comments as I think are necessary. A lot of times, if the author’s done some amazing worldbuilding - nice and compact, not forced exposition, and then just seamlessly takes us back to the action - I leave a comment about how awesome it is, PLUS I point out my thought process for HOW it’s awesome. (For example, @Jaye Milius "Terminus" sticks out in my mind for being really good at worldbuillding in the posted chapter.) For me, leaving comments is a learning experience, for myself as much as for the benefit of the author (whether I’m right or wrong, I just like to get my thought process out in the open).

My comments are never "negative." I never say "this sucks" or something like that. BUT I definitely point out parts that I think are weak and proceed to explain as best I can WHY I found them to be. Maybe it’s some important detail above that I missed/misread that’s leading to the confusion. Fine... might be my fault. Or even still, in that scenario, it might be because that crucial detail wasn’t strong enough to stand out. Again, it’s like a learning process. I would say that’s the guiding rule for comment etiquette - treat it like a LEARNING PROCESS. I’m willing to bet that there’s NO author on Inkshares who thinks they’re an expert on writing. I don’t consider myself one. Writers, by most definition, are people who suffer from crippling self-doubt, right? :D  We’re always second guessing ourselves, right? If you leave a comment and make your INTENTION TO LEARN / HELP clear, whether the comment is positive or negative, then I think the comments system can be of mutual benefit.

      Just my two cents. :D

Oh, and for %^&*’s sakes... Please don’t point out misplaced modifiers or punctuation mistakes. That’s just nitpicky. I think a lot of your credibility as a commentor will go down the toilet if you get hung up on stuff like that. (...Unless you can zoom in on a specific grammatical error that’s led to ambiguity in meaning.  But even still... Tread cautiously with grammar comments.)

Robert Batten liked an update for Squids In

Thank you to everyone who has placed a repeat order for SQUIDS IN following my last update. As a result the book is that little bit closer to publication.

Hendrix the Octopus is continuing in his promotion of the book, though personally I suspect he’s just playing Pokemon Go!

Special thanks to Nick Holden who ordered 10 BOOKS!!! Nick races in the Britcar series over here in the UK in a Renaultsport RS-01 and uses one of my Race-Keeper HDX2 onboard video-data logging systems. Now tell me that this isn’t a gorgeous looking race car...

110 orders in 46 days. LET’S DO THIS!!!

Robert Batten liked an update for Canalway

Hello to all the readers who have taken the time to follow my project! I have recently had a good amount of beta reading going and have started reworking Canalway. As it stands, it is only a 16,000 word story. Barely even a novella really. I’m working on expanding it and editing some of scenes that are a bit cliché in Lovecraftian writing. I’ll be sharing snippets as I go along. Hopefully you’ll enjoy the work and in the end it reaches the goal of being a standalone story. If it falls a bit short I have 2 other stories I’m working on of a similar length that could be added to expanded the story into a collection of fictions. Thanks for following my project!

Robert Batten liked an update for Destiny Imperfect

            Greetings Destiny-followers,

It’s been a little over a week since the Inkshares/Nerdist contest and I want to thank you all again for making Destiny Imperfect possible. It’s been a rollercoaster ride so far, and the best is yet to come.

I’d now like to point you in the direction of another one of the contestants. Matthew Poat put together an immense top ten performance and his book, Squids In, looks like a complete blast. I’d love to see this project come to life, and it’d be great if you could get behind this squishy cephalopod. You can find Matt’s book here.  Hit the pre-order button and embrace your inner octopus!

            Enjoy your weekend!

Robert Batten liked an update for Squids In

              Hello Everyone!

After taking some time off following the conclusion of the contest I’ve decided to see if we can amass 250 pre-orders before the end of SQUIDS IN’s campaign in order to get this mad book published. I’ve even managed to convince Hendrix the octopus to hit the streets and drum up support.

If you have any spare Inkshares credits or money that’s burning a hole in your pocket, you could do a lot worse then helping someone achieve publication.

              Thanks guys!
