I’m a nice guy. Maybe the nicest on this ship.

That sound you hear is my own little metronome. You see, life needs to be set to a pace. Nice and even. Ups and downs. It’s all about achieving a nice harmony. You show this syncopation in every action, and the world will acknowledge you. Good things will come your way. It’s all very natural. Like a plant that gets just the right amount of sunlight.

This thing you’re hearing. It’s an antique. Something from a long time ago. They guy who sold it to me said it might even have magical powers. For me it does, I’m certain. This little plastic bird that rocks back in forth, dipping its beak into a glass of water perfectly on beat – this little toy inspires me.

And helps me think. Mainly I’m thinking of ways to get more people to like me. As it is now, I cook delicacies for all of the crew members, who delight that they don’t have to eat another cup of noodles for the third week in a row. I chat with them idly, but mainly I listen. Listening to all these problems makes me feel better, and it makes me feel in control. It’s a feeling I can’t seem to get enough of. A secret pact, an exchange of trust. They don’t know it, these people I talk to, but they just sold me their most precious commodity. Trust. Trust and friendship. I know they will help me later, and that’s what it’s all about.

I tried befriending the captain a while back. Before he went into seclusion. I could sense his weakness from the CCM drive. What a strange and useless man.
Heck, I even try to befriend the old hermit who lives in the brewery tanks. I slip him a note under his door every now and then. This way he knows someone is out there thinking of him. My generosity only goes so far though, it’s not like I’d actually spend time speaking to him face to face. He’s more useful to me this way.

This little satellite is perfect. No one to hear me. Deaf to all of these little tools I have stored away neatly in this shelf. All of these friends I’ve made. They will come to my aid soon. They will help me build something amazing.
And better for the captain to remain behind his mask.
He’ll never see it coming.
