Imaginary Friend

Doesn’t little Johnny have a wonderful imagination?

His soldiers want peace, his train talks to the station.

Chugga Chugga Choo Choo - See you later, friend!

He played like this for hours - it never seemed to end

I promised never to stop him - let this last while it can

But I’m very much uneasy about his new invisible best friend Stan.

See Stan likes to do a lot of bad things like throw rocks out in the street

And though Johnny tries to stop him, Stan always tracks in mud on his feet.

Stan also made Johnny steal candy from the grocery store

And who do you think took the blame for this? Who got the extra chore?

I heard Stan talking the other day in a form of Johnny’s voice

And they were talking about fireworks - right then I made a choice.

I was going to get rid of Stan - send him far away

And maybe then Johnny could go back to how he used to play?

Next day I told Johnny, “Stan’s parents called and said he has to leave.”

Johnny tells me Stan’s parents are dead - Stan, what’s hiding up your sleeve?

“Oh yeah, what happened to them?” I ask, trying to catch him off his guard.

“They took away his best friend, then had an accident in their car.”

I didn’t like the sound of this; I didn’t like it at all.

“Stan has to go, Johnny!” - my fists were in a ball.

“Stan’s not going anywhere!” ‘Unexpectedly, my son stood his ground.

“He’s the bestest friend I’ve ever had - the best to ever be found!

And if you try to make him leave again, you’ll soon learn true regret.”

And then another voice said, “Think you could even make me leave?

I’d definitely take that bet.”
