Robert Batten liked an update for The Slave Prince

MID-YEAR UPDATE

I’m guessing most of you, at this point of time, might’ve completely forgotten about my book. Which is fine by me - a blessing, in fact. However, I don’t want to take your patience for granted. So thank you for waiting. Thank you for understanding. And thank you for, as odd as this might sound, the silence.

Since I’m writing today, you’re probably wondering if there’s good news. Alas, I write this update simply to say I’m still waiting. I submitted my manuscript and all the related documents on March 31st. Since then, I’ve decided to trust that The Slave Prince will start production in its own perfect timing. Silly, I know. What kind of gullible faith is that? However, I choose to believe that the day The Slave Prince is made, is the right day for it to be made. I don’t know when that will be - it could be in 2018 (I hope) - but I believe.

Recently, I wrote a blog post about the perfect timing. It’s sort of my life’s motto (you can read the whole post here: https://jeynagrace.wordpress.com/2017/06/01/the-perfect-timing/). Naturally, I approach this novel with the same mindset. Since it took 3 years to find the right place for The Slave Prince, what’s a few more years? At the end of the day, The Slave Prince is simply a part of my writing journey - it isn’t the finish line.

With all that said, I hope you’ll continue to wait with me. I truly appreciate all you’ve done - supporting the book during the contest, and post-contest with your syndicates (those were such pleasant surprises). I’m looking forward to the day I present you with my book. But until then, believe with me - its perfect time will come.

My friends, we’ve made another strong push for progress today. We’ve narrowed the gap between us and third place down to only 18, and I’m still pushing to reduce that further. As much progress as we’ve made today, though, a lot more remains. Our competition is still moving forward relentlessly, and I fully anticipate a last-minute surge. We are down to the last two days, so if anyone’s been holding out to the end, now is the time for reinforcements.

No long update today, because I’m honestly too busy trying to drag in pre-orders to write one, so here’s this instead. Share it with your friends! This is not a story about heroes. Nobody comes out of this one with clean hands. This is a story that deals in shades of monstrosity. If you’re ready to see some deeply messed-up characters deal with some even more messed-up situations, hop on board and pre-order this thing.

We are down to the last few updates regarding Mission 51 and the Nerdist Sci-Fi-Fi Contest. There are only 54 hours left and we are holding on to 2nd place, but just barely. Here are the current standings:

209 for the contestant in 1st place

192 for our Mission 51 in 2nd place

190 for the contestant in 3rd place

171 for the contestant in 4th place

Three of these four contestants will win full Inkshares publishing contracts. The fourth will not! We are in serious need of a few more pre-orders to keep a distance from 3rd place.

Those of you yet to pre-order, this is your chance to make a HUGE difference! Please place your pre-order now!

Those of you who have, you are the very reason Mission 51 has gotten this far! You are the ones who can save the day! I humbly ask that you find one other pre-order among your family and friends, and I urge you to do it soon, real soon.

This will be an exciting finish! I’ll keep doing what I can to bring us new pre-orders. Please do what you can, too. Thank you, everyone!

        Hello all!

Curio Citizen is still in 1st place! It has been a slow weekend for the contest as a whole, it seems, but there are two days left in the competition. I would love to secure my place in the top 3, but I still really need your help to pull it off! If each one of you is able to get one other person to pre-order, that would increase my chances immensely. Curio Citizen has a good lead, but we can’t rest yet. Please help me succeed in getting this book published! I can’t wait for you all to read it, and I have to be in the top 3 for you to be able to do that. Thank you so much for everything you all have done. The deadline is this Tuesday, June 27th. The contest is open all day on Tuesday, so we can still get some last minute pre-orders in that day--because the competition certainly might!

Please click HERE to pre-order Curio Citizen.

Here’s today’s look into the world of Curio Citizen:

        The Capitol

The largest city on Paz is also the seat of the planet-wide government, and is simply referred to as the Captiol. It holds millions of inhabitants, and includes the biggest and most eclectic curio museums, an enormous quadrisphere stadium, and numerous government buildings. One of these buildings houses the High and Low Councils, and many of the lesser courts. It is called the Egalitarian.

The architecture of the city is diverse, but typically consists of pale colors and various gleaming metals, sparkling crystals, and sleek pearl facades.

The Capitol is centered around a large, paz-made lake, which seems to anchor the beautiful city, and extends its pure waters into countless ponds and fountains throughout the courtyards, plazas, streets, and home and public gardens. It is hard to be anywhere in the Capitol where a background splash of water isn’t heard.

        --

"The elevator lifted. The movement was so smooth, I hardly felt it, but the view out of the two-way mirror doors made our height clear.

It was breathtaking. The city was a broach of pearl and opal in a setting of white gold. Glints of emerald trees and open lawns intermixed with sapphire ponds, and the expansive lake was the crown jewel.

’This is our largest city,’ Inquieto informed me. ’The Capitol of Paz.’

’Paz is your planet,’ I said, unable to take my eyes off the glittering spectacle. ’Your planet has a capitol?’

’Of course,’ he said. He may have intended to say more, but the elevator stopped itself, and our conversation."

Robert Batten liked an update for Tantalus Depths

          Hello once again my friends.

This has been a very, very long week. This time last week we were in the top three, Now we’re trailing behind in fourth by 22 pre-orders. But it was 29 pre-orders this morning! We gained a lot of ground today, and that’s something I think all of us should be proud of. We can’t stop yet, though. We can’t even pause.

Less than three days remain in this contest. The victors will be decided on Tuesday, and I aim to be among them. 22 pre-orders is both so little and so much. So little because it is definitely, absolutely possible for us to get them and catch up to where we were; at the beginning of this contest, we were able to get that many in just a single day, and a few days ago we were able to get 18 all in one day. But...it’s so much because that was then and this is now. That was before I called upon everyone I know for help. That was back when I had enough money to run a couple ads, that was before most of the people I knew I could count on had placed their orders. Right now...I don’t know where those 22 orders are going to come from.

So once again, I’m calling out to you all for your support. If you haven’t yet, talk to your spouse about this. Talk to your parents. Talk to your siblings. Your best friends. Your coworker who’s always reading during lunch breaks. Talk to anyone you can think of; if there’s one thing I’ve learned from this campaign and the one for Tantalus Depths, it’s that you absolutely never know who might be willing to help you when you need it.

The odds are not quite in our favor right now, but I insist on optimism. I must proceed as if victory is a forgone conclusion. If I try as hard as I can and fail, I will be content. If I give up when I could have won, I’ll never forgive myself. So I take the path of positivity, just like our final highlighted character, Katie Salvador.

          Katie Salvador

When civil war divided the crew of The Somnambule, it was the first true conflict ever witnessed by the third and fourth generation crewmen. To the naive and isolated descendants of The Somnambule’s original crew, the terrors of battle and mutiny were an awakening, a loss of innocence. For most noncombatants, the mere notion that their fellow crew members were killing one another in the mid-decks was enough to crush the youthful optimism fostered by a lifetime of security. Not so for Katie Salvador.

A fourth generation member of The Somnambule’s crew, Katie was a constant source of positivity and optimism, sharing her excess of cheer with every member of the ship’s crew she encountered. Like everyone else born on the ship, Katie was selected from a young age to fulfill a set of specific roles within the ship’s hierarchy. Katie was selected to join the ship’s medical staff, and while she took to her assigned job with the same zeal she applied to the rest of her life, her natural desire to help others led her to voluntarily pick up additional responsibilities in the ship.

By the age of twelve, she was already spending much of her free time in the hydroponic farms on the ship’s inner decks, taking great pleasure in tending to the various crop plants and helping them grow. She continued with this side work into her teens, even while she began to work full shifts in the ship’s infirmaries.

When Marion Krieg led her rebellion in an attempt to seize control of the ship, Katie pulled double shifts in the infirmary to treat the wounded, and continued to do so until the conflict resolved to a tense stalemate when Krieg’s rebels retreated to the lower decks.

Though the loyalist members of the crew had successfully thwarted Krieg’s initial rebellion, it had come at great cost. Many members of The Somnambule’s security force were killed in the battle, and with the conflict remaining unresolved, new recruits had to be drafted from the ship’s civilian population to replace them. Seeing a new opportunity to serve, Katie volunteered to take up arms and join the security force.

Training under her father, the head of the security force, Katie quickly learned the basics of combat. Her extensive medical training saw her fit well into a support role as a combat medic. Though still only 16 years old, Katie served as a vital member of the loyalists’ makeshift militia, not only for her skills as a healer, but for the warmth of her personality. Katie provided her brothers and sisters in arms with an endless supply of positivity in a time when morale could not have sunk lower...

Here is today’s look into the world of Curio Citizen:

Cálido Reúnen is Inquieto’s younger brother and is the Earth equivalent of 19 years old. He has an insatiable sense of humor, which is his way of lightening tension and keeping peace in social interactions. He is an expert at walking the line between jests in good humor and insults, and so it is extremely rare he actually offends any paz with his lighthearted jibes. His skills are put to the test when he meets Carmen, however.

In addition to his wit, Cálido is a genius when it comes to engineering and programming, and he "tinkers" with machines in the basement workshop of his parents’ home. He can be quite handy in a tricky situation--if he can be convinced to participate.

              -----
Inquieto smiled down at me, and I stepped back from the door as I heard footsteps on the other side.

“Weeeell, look who cleans up nice.” Inquieto made an annoyed clicking sound.

                       “Cálido,” he said, “really?”

Cálido smirked, and then eyed me up and down. I looked at him with an expression that echoed Inquieto’s word.

He was shorter than Inquieto and looked a few years younger, but there was a definite resemblance. They both had high cheekbones and nicely-shaped lips with just the right fullness. He was dressed in similar black fabric, but had draped a salmon sash across his chest, trimmed with fine threads of gold. He wore the same pin on his chest that I did.

“Well, it—she does,” he said. “Though that scowl is the same.”

                       “Maybe, if you—”

“Carmen,” Inquieto interrupted the insult he no doubt sensed was forming on my tongue and placed his hand on my shoulder. “This is my brother, Cálido. Cálido, this is Carmen. And yes, she is in much better condition than when you saw her last, now that she is recognized as a person.”

Fantastic. His brother had seen me before. One of my many visitors at the Museum. I swallowed my outrage and flush of humiliation and gave a short nod.

“It’s nice to meet you, Cálido,” I said as clearly as I could.

He laughed. “Ah, this is great,” he said. “She can talk.” He turned around and waved us inside. “Father’s making tilt-sticks; he’s around back,” he informed us over his shoulder as he walked off.

                        I sent Inquieto a wide-eyed glare.

“Don’t worry about Cálido,” he said. “He’s easily amused. Mother and father will be less...”

                       “Rude?” I offered.

“This is a new situation,” he corrected. “Try to be understanding.”

              -----

Whether Inquieto had specifically invited him for my benefit or not, I was glad for the company. Teasing as it was, Cálido’s sense of humor was bold compared to most paz, different from Inquieto’s gentle sarcasm laced with worried affection. I could relate to Cálido on a more human level, even if he did share the pervasive paz outlook that everyone was innocent and never intended any harm to one another. If anything, his jokes were his way of keeping peace, of laughing off any potential, awkward situations to make people smile. He lived up to his name, Warm. He was vivacious as fire and as kind and comforting as a mug of hot chocolate.

Robert Batten liked an update for Skavenger’s Hunt

To my good friends who this week were among the first to pre-order my upcoming debut novel Skavenger’s Hunt...thank you! To those waiting for ten minutes of quiet coffee time to join the Hunt, now’s your moment. As most of you know, my writing career has been dedicated to screenplays like Finding Forrester, The Rookie, Radio, Secretariat and Cars 3. But now? I’ve written a book!

Skavenger’s Hunt is an adventurous read inspired by the great novels of my youth: stories like "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." It’s the fictional, yet magical, origin story of the very first scavenger hunt, layered with a dash of time travel to the year 1885. It comes complete with young underdog heroes, mysterious villains and larger-than-life true historical figures; as well as seemingly unsolvable clues and riddles that thousands of hunters are tasked with unraveling on a journey that will take them around the world. All of it put together by one charismatic, reclusive character named Hunter Skavenger.

Sound enticing? Click on https://www.inkshares.com/books/skavenger and you’ll learn how to get your hands on this coming November’s release of Skavenger’s Hunt. You’ll love it...and your kids will love it too. Pre-orders are critically important to early momentum, so I’m asking you to join the Hunt right now. Thanks to the support of my publisher, Inkshares, the book will be delivered just as the holiday gift season begins, and I’ll sign and personally dedicate all orders for three copies or more (just go to the Super Reader Box on my Inkshares webpage and adjust the 3 in the Quantity window to whatever number you’d like). And if you like what you see? Send the link to your family and friends!

I had a blast writing Skavenger’s Hunt, and I’d like nothing more than for you to be among the select first to have my first novel in your hands within the next few months. If you’ve enjoyed my films, I promise you’ll enjoy this too.

                Thanks!

Hello friends and other assorted sentient beings,

If you’re getting this, then it’s entirely likely that you’ve also received an email or two (or three) announcing that the sequel to The Life Engineered, Arch-Android, is now live for pre-order! Exciting!

                  Except that it’s not.

                  "Aww..."

No, don’t be sad! Or be sad. Practice your human emotions. That’s okay too, but rest assured that this was not a mistake. I fully intended on having Arch-Android be taking pre-orders today. Unfortunately, there’s a problem with the system and being the weekend, it’s a little difficult to ask Inkshares to fix it post-haste.

They’ll get to it though and we’ll repair the machine and we’ll be up and running soon enough. I’ll send you an update just like this one once we’ve tamed the code that is preventing us from moving forward.

Thank you for your support and I’ll be talking to you real soon.

Mission 51 continues to (barely) hold on to 2nd place in the contest. It is because of the continuing pre-orders we are receiving. Thank you!

But this is no time to let up. The contest was extended to June 27. We must keep gathering regular pre-orders if we are to stay in the top three. There continues to be large movement in the leaderboard.

                    Here are the current standings:

                    197 unique name/email pre-orders for contestant in 1st place

180 for our Mission 51 in 2nd place

178 for contestant in 3rd place (continues to move up fast!)

152 for contestant in 4th place (seasoned competitor)

121 for contestant in 5th place

Mission 51 followers who have yet to pre-order, you’re help would be priceless at this time! Well, there is a price, but a simple $10 pre-order might make all the difference between having Mission 51 receive a full publishing contract by this contest or not! Please be a part of crowdfunding this book into existence! Please help with a pre-order!

Thank you very much, everyone, for your amazing, continuing support!
