Donna Litt liked the forum thread, Turning followers/prospects into pre-orders
Hi Leanne. Good luck with your funding.  First bit of advice I would say is have a plan for how/when you’re going to update and contact people. I spent about two weeks flailing around before I wrapped my brain around the process. As for followers, I would say one thing to start with is follow other authors and books. I’ve found that many will follow me back and a few have been excellent resources.

Donna Litt sent an update for Where the Sun Sets

You know the phrase, ’Don’t judge a book by its cover’? Well, Where the Sun Sets doesn’t have a cover. Which begs the question, ’If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?’ (You’ll have to read Where the Sun Sets to discover the answer, or rather, Vole’s answer.)

There are lots of ways to go about getting a book cover. But my hope is that this one comes from someone that it means something to. Someone who loves the idea of seeing their artwork, or the artwork of someone they know, on the cover of a fiction novel about a poignant love in a time-stopped world.

    So, I’m running a contest!

If the idea of contributing to book fabrication fascinates you, or someone you know, I invite you to take a look: https://www.facebook.com/Wherethesunsets/

    I promise, it’s a simple contest.

    1) Enter your image
    2) When the submission period closes (Sunday December 4), the internet will vote up a winner!

    PRIZES

    1) $150 Donation to Diyode, to go toward helping reduce waste while setting up a sustainable recycling business in Jacmel, Haiti*, made in your name.

    2) $150 Gift for your support and participation. Delivered in cash, or credit for Words Worth Books (your choice).

    3) Your art on the cover of Where the Sun Sets, sold through Inkshares.com! And (if enough pre-orders are made!) the possibility of having your art grace the cover of Where the Sun Sets, sold around the world (Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble, independent book stores).

Additional detail posted to Facebook, but if you would like more information or to chat about details, please don’t hesitate to ask.

I invite you to share my contact information with anyone that you think might be interested in participating! With just under 2 months left, I’m almost at 50% of my Quill goal (250 pre-orders), and any bit of love helps :)

Thank you for reading, & thank you for your continued support.

    Donna

I honestly feel like crying right now and I want you to know why - I lost another preorder because a friend went to the site with every intention to buy and got back to me with "is there an option for paypal? i only see bitcoin and credit card"

I’m doing everything I can to get pre-orders, but here it’s mostly pre-order trading that I can’t afford, or relying on an affluent social circle locally. My traffic comes from fandom people who are decidedly international and they will visit the site, see they need a credit card and leave forever.

There are at least five people I know personally who would have bought the book if they could have done so with paypal. I’m already handicapped because of my financial situation and this is supposed to be a site about democratically deciding who gets to be published.

Well, my people whether they’re local Germans or fandom people from all over are incapable of supporting me, because payment options skew so heavily toward middle class American geeks.

I get that you all tried to help with the whole thing about sharing cards or getting gift cards, but that’s requiring SO MUCH more effort from potential supporters that it’s not really a solution at all.

Please, please consider PayPal at least as an additional option - I know it will probably be too late for my novel, but for the future growth of the site it might be vital.

Agreed. I live overseas and have fanagled some public readings at local "foreigner" events over the next month, which is something that almost always ends in sales (personal pleas for support are always the strongest),  but given the CC restriction, I feel like I’m being shot in the foot. Yes, people in Taiwanese have credit cards, but my local audience are English-speakers, the vast majority of which will not be Taiwanese. Even though there are non-descrimination laws on the books, expats generally have issues getting credit cards from local banks and, more often than not, go without.

And there are no disposable/pre-paid credit cards available here.

It’s difficult enough trying to get noticed, much less drum up support or make sales, over the Internet. The lack of alternative payment options physically restricts the only real viable option that I have.
