Actually, I’ll take it a step further: Don’t mass-email people if you haven’t asked them to opt in to your mass email list. I’ve been added to multiple mailing lists without signing up. And most of them also have no easy option to unsubscribe.

(I’d be less bothered by this if most of the mass emails weren’t asking me to pre-order a book I already ordered, but that’s beside the point.)

The reader update module on the site is a wonderful tool that bakes in the reader’s right to opt in or out. People who follow your book have told you it’s totally cool to send them updates through that. Anything beyond that, you need to ask.

    J. Danielle Dorn liked an update for An Unattractive Vampire

    UPDATE!!!

First and most importantly is a reminder that An Unattractive Vampire will be An Unattractive Audiobook at Audible.com starting the 23rd! So if you’re tired of physically reading the book with your eyes and would rather have it read TO you like you were some kind of Roman Emperor/Empress, lying on a couch being fanned and fed grapes, head on over to Audible and preorder it today! (Fans, couch, grapes, and Roman titles not included.)

    Next is the BIG NEWS!

That’s right! There’s a new book contest, this time with Geek and Sundry, producers of pretty much most of the shows I watch, and I’ve decided to throw my hat into the ring with my second book currently entitled, Morose: A Comedy.
The pitch: Death gets laid off at the end of the world.
The synopsis: The End is nigh. Armageddon has come. And with the four horseman taking over soul-collecting duties from the children of Death, the tragedy-masked member of the Reaper family most dedicated to his work, Morose, has something he never expected to possess: time. If only he had any idea what to do with it.

With the helpful prodding from his eternally irresponsible twin brother and vengeful, sometimes murder-god sister, not to mention those few humans who don’t immediately wet themselves in his presence, Morose will explore the most puzzling questions the mortal realm has to offer, like:
why caves don’t count as shelter,
    why immortals shouldn’t be telemarketers,
    pinball,
    proper wedding bouquet etiquette,
    the meaning of life,
...and his brother’s insistence that he buy a television screen at least seventy-two inches wide.

However, Morose better find his answers soon, because the apocalypse is heating up and as the death toll rises, he might just be the only one who can stop it.

In the tradition of Christopher Moore’s A Dirty Job and Terry Pratchett’s Reaper Man, Morose is a comic tale of life, Death, and the end of the world.

If you’d like to view a sample chapter or pre-order the book, you can head over to the project page for Morose: A Comedy.

A few of the contest details...
This contest is a little different than the last. Instead of total number of books, its based on number of unique readers buying books. So rather than buying a book for each of your coworkers, cousins, neighbors, and goth nieces and nephews, I need you to convince your coworkers, cousins, neighbors, and goth nieces and nephews to buy THEIR OWN copy.

The three books with the highest individual reader count by November 1st will be published by Inkshares and have the opportunity to be a part of GEEK AND SUNDRY! Have I mentioned how much I love Geek and Sundry? Let me count the ways.
How about this picture of me with Felicia Day?

Or this OTHER picture of me with Wil Wheaton while wearing a Tabletop t-shirt?

Or maybe there’s the Critical Role fan fiction I wrote?

Yeah. I’m a fan. It would be a huge deal for me to be a part of their community. So what do you say? Let’s make Jim-erica Book Again!

      J. Danielle Dorn liked an update for Exile, Magus

Hey everybody!  I didn’t expect to be saying this for at least another 3-4 months, but Exile, Magus is live and in funding mode!  When I saw the G&S contest announcement, it was too good of an opportunity for me to pass up.  I’m now in that somewhat panicky "I wasn’t ready for this" first day of campaign launch mode.  Its both an incredibly nervous and highly energized feeling.  I’ve already gotten a pretty good start, so now its just up to me to keep up the momentum.  I’m hoping you’ll join me in that endeavor as well.  That’s all I’ve got for now, expect to hear from me every Tuesday or Thursday from now until the end of this contest with updates on our progress as well as other fun "things" I’ve been doing my best to save up to share with you all.

As always, thanks for your time, support, and keep reading!

        J. Danielle Dorn sent an update for Devil’s Call

        My lovely supporters,

With two days left, we’re still very much short of Quill, and I’ve been doing a decent amount of thinking.

Although I have more preorders than I have Twitter followers, which is a testament to the power of word of mouth if nothing else, there were a lot of things I ought to have done differently during the course of fundraising that I didn’t even think of six months ago. When I say this has been a learning experience, that’s no exaggeration.

Inkshares offered me the opportunity to expose a wide audience to my manuscript, which is amazing for a young unpublished writer without a preexisting reader base. People whose work I admire have read and lauded this weird little story and I have this strange newfound hope for the future, which believe it or not is more important than publication.

Which brings me to the conclusion of all that thinking:

I am not going to be asking for an extension on the campaign.

Those of you who’ve already placed preorders will always have a special place in my heart, but unless something ridiculous happens that enables me to sell another hundred preorders before then, you’ll be receiving refunds on Friday. Everyone who has offered emotional support or feedback, or plugged the project on Twitter or Bookface or wherever else I’ve seen referrals coming from, you are the real MVPs. Thank you, thank you.

I tried to find a "riding off into the sunset" gif, because Western, and Google gave me this. Cheers!

          J. Danielle Dorn liked an update for Squids In

Hendrix is still doing his bit to raise awareness for SQUIDS IN. Not only did he hang out in Times Square at stupid o’clock in the morning the other day, he managed to get a few of his minions a free ride on some Porsche Carrera Cup racing cars.

It’s becoming very apparent that Hendrix and I will not manage our target of 250 pre-orders alone. If you know anyone who has a rude sense of humor, please point them to the sample SQUIDS IN chapters. Thanks!

            J. Danielle Dorn liked an update for The Seventh Age: Dawn

I’m just going to open with the final cover for The Seventh Age:

I want to thank all of you, the people who have supported me, in helping pick directions, refine options and taking the time to vote.

Ashley Marie Witter, the Illustrator, who crammed me into her intensely busy schedule of Squarriors. You can check out more of her artwork and rabid apocalyptic rodents by clicking HERE.

Scott over at Cyantype Covers. They did a fantastic job making different options and helping pull everything together for the final version you see today. My finest metal (\m/ >;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;. salute goes to the work that they have done.

Lastly, to Emily, Avalon, and everyone at the joint Girl Friday / Inkshares production team for helping take the very nebulous concept of a cover into something this badass.

My sincerest thank you to everyone involved,

            ~Rick Heinz.

              J. Danielle Dorn liked an update for Borehole Bazaar: A Vow Unbroken

Yay!  I have some GREAT NEWS!!!  I’ve put up another chapter (it’s purty chapter five), which is cool and wonderful for y’all (again, tis all written and such, these are just happy little things!  One of my friend’s favorite scenes is in this chapter, wherein our protagonist interacts with the human named Ambrosia)!

In other news, I’ve just finished painting my 100th page for these short story compilations.  Yay!  Anyone else who decides to order 2 or more copies of Borehole Bazaar can have a spiral bound book of several of the short stories -- also all hand illustrated (this is not a scan one and print routine, folks!)-- sent to them, then please do so!  I’d love a DM so I can praise you in that moment, too!  I wish y’all an amazing day and hope you like your treats!
