Becca Spence Dobias liked the forum thread, Welcome new and old!
Hello!  I found Inkshares through an online review of A God in the Shed while searching for new author resources online.  What an amazing idea!  My only writing so far has been academic, but like art and photography, I enjoy writing fiction whenever I can find time.

This summer, I find myself with a couple of months off between jobs, and I’m taking the opportunity to finally finish the first draft of a hard sci-fi novel I’ve been poking at for a few years.  I’m very close to starting a draft here on Inkshares, but I have a few questions about building a readership on other sites simultaneously.  Would it be advisable to also post my work on sites like Medium, Goodreads, and other indie publishing sites?  Or, is that considered bad form if I’m attempting to get published on Inkshares?  I’m new at this, so I want to start out on the right foot.

Thanks in advance for any advice you may have!
Cheers,
Mike

Hi everyone! I found Inkshares through a book jacket at my local library. I’ve envisioned my writing on bookstore shelves since I was in early elementary school and am excited to finally start out on that journey. I’m definitely interested in hearing feedback to strengthen and hone my skills. I also enjoy reading as much as I can and having access to the great pieces here has already been quite fun. I look forward to new friends and advice!

Becca Spence Dobias liked an update for The Last Faoii

      Updates, Faoii! Listen up!

It’s been 9 months since The Last Faoii released. As such, it’s probably about time that I shift my focus over to the army forming under our new banner and let this courier retire. If you haven’t already followed Faoii Betrayer click here and hit the FOLLOW button. I want you to still get my missives even when they come from a different camp.

Speaking of Faoii Betrayer.--I feel like I must remind you again that this battle is a hard one. I need you in this fight. I need you to pick up a new blade and join the campaign that’s going to get Faoii Betrayer published. The first campaign was hard enough that it almost killed me, and it was only a third as daunting as this one is. But I didn’t have followers, then. I didn’t have people who’d already read Kaiya’s tale and asked for more. I didn’t have an army. So I’m going to depend on you to make this happen. Prove to me that it’s worth it to you. Pick up your sword again and find more soldiers for this fight. It’s going to take all of us, Faoii. But we can do it. Let me hear your warcry!

And I promise--you’re going to want to meet Alana and follow her story of revolution in Faoii Betrayer. Click Here to read the first excerpt I have up (though it won’t mean much to you if you haven’t already finished The Last Faoii).  Or, if you want to just take that leap of faith, click here to pick up your new blade and add your battlecry to the growing choir. Wielders of the Eternal Blade get their name in the back of the finished product-- why not have your name go down in history like a true Faoii?

That’s it for now. I look forward to seeing you at our new camp. We’re going to make sure the world hears us this time. They will know us by the end of this.

Happy summer Supporters of Crow’s Gambit!

After talking to several of you last week as the ASEE conference I know there is some confusion on the book. Never fear we did meet the required Pre-Orders for Quill publishing. However, actually getting a book from draft form to your hands takes some time. And given my schedule lately it is taking even more time.

Right now we are in the phase called Developmental Editing. That means I am rewriting some portions of the story to make it flow better…and hopefully make it super exciting and interesting! I will be working with a developmental editor who will help make the story even better by offering lots of suggestions for improvement.

After that we go to Copy Editing and Line Editing with Inkshares. This process will clean up the actual words; making sure names are consistent, punctuation is used correctly, words are spelled correctly…you get the picture.

So, please be patient. The book has not disappeared. It is alive and well but it will take some time to get it into your hands.

Becca Spence Dobias liked an update for How to Remember

Hello, readers! Must be a tradition... my last update was at Memorial Day, and this one’s at the Fourth of July. I guess the next time you’ll hear from me will be at Labor Day. :-)

Big news - the book is now in the developmental editing phase. If you’re unfamiliar with the stages of editing, this is the phase where we take a close look at the story and find ways to strengthen it by changing key pieces. With the help of my Inkshares editor, I’ve taken HOW TO REMEMBER down to the studs. My awesome writers’ group helped me find a few lingering issues, and I submitted my revised outline today. We are one step closer to getting a great book into your hands.

I’ve also begun blogging with a bunch of great friends and Inkshares writers over at Writing Bloc. Follow us on Twitter at @Writing_Bloc for lots of great content! We’re currently working on a short story anthology, and I’m the lead on editing.

Last but not least, I’m nearing the midpoint of the draft for THE ENIGMA VARIATIONS, my latest project. All in all, the writing world is busy and good for me right now!

Let me know what you are all up to, readers - I’d love to hear from you! Happy week!

It’s July! We’re moved into our new house and just in time. I received my developmental edit letter from my editor on Friday! If you haven’t heard of a developmental edit letter, you aren’t alone. I hadn’t either until I started this process. It’s basically a giant letter explaining eveything that needs to be changed in your book.

I’ve been super nervous to receive mine since I’ve heard the editor is very thorough. Some of my Inkshares author friends have gone through 9 or 10 drafts! Sure enough, the letter suggests I restructure my whole story, take out some characters and plots, make some changes to focus on a different audience (young adult!), and work a lot on my descriptive prose and character arcs.

The extent of the suggestions wasn’t a surprise, but my reaction was! I really expected to be very defensive and sad and overwhelmed. Instead I feel incredibly honored that someone as skilled as my editor gave such thoughtful and helpful comments and incredibly grateful that you all gave me the chance to work with him. This book is going to be so much better because of it.

I just submitted a revised (4000 word!) outline based on his suggestions and we’ll work on that until we agree it’s time to move forward to a rewrite. I’ll keep you all updated!

Thank you for following along with this journey and for giving me the opportunity to experience this process! It’s so exciting!

Becca Spence Dobias liked an update for The Last Faoii

              Greetings, Faoii! Exciting news today!

The and best way is to watch the video of your newest missive by clicking here.

              ;;

For those who don’t want to watch the video, here’s a summary: SO MANY of you have asked me about a sequel to The Last Faoii. So, let’s make that happen. Faoii Betrayer is now open for pre-orders and I need you to pick up your blade again if we’re going to see it become real. It’s going to be a hard fight, my warriors. We need 750 soldiers on our side before we can even begin the process towards publication. I’ve already had people tell me not to get my hopes up... but they didn’t have an army, did they? Prove. Them. Wrong.

The biggest thing we need in order to see Faoii Betrayer is more soldiers. Our current army isn’t going to cut it--we must spread the word. So tell your friends and your family. Leave a review for The Last Faoii on Amazon. Do whatever you can to bring more soldiers to this banner. This campaign and it becoming real is on you, Faoii. You want to see Faoii Betrayer? Prove it.

It’s been too long, my warriors. Pick up your blades and let’s show the world what we’re made of. I’ll see you on the battlefield.
