The Hulink and The Diunies

from THE BOOK OF SEBAYT

A hulink was so starved her three tails dragged behind her wherever she went leaving a clear trail for any who might follow. She found an opening into a walled garden where diunies were growing. The berries hung in large clusters upon high arbors, deep-purple and fragrant. She shook the dust from her tails and leapt again and again hoping for some of the tartly sweet sustenance.Yet for all her effort she was only made more weary so that she could barely raise her head to gaze longingly at the diunies. It was then she saw the trellising of the arbors and the way the diuny-vines had climbed around the structure and she decided to do the same. She groped her way up the vines till she sat upon the top of the high arbors. She plucked a full cluster of diunies from the vines with each of her tails and filled her belly with them, each berry bursting in her mouth with the juice already turned to wine. When she finally leapt from the arbor to the garden wall to the world, she did not go back to hide the trail of her entrance and said to herself, “May we all find a way to a full belly and the gardeners help us to take only as we need."
