Chapter 18
Grigsby didn't know what to do at this point. Everything in his life was crumbling around him and it seemed as if he had no way of stopping it. The Chief was gone. The only person he could confide in and feel safe around going through this whole ordeal was the Chief, and now he had lost that crutch. What was he going to do and how was he going to stop these children from taking or killing him as well. He dropped to his knees and began praying. Something he had rarely done before in his life, yet recently had been doing quite a bit of. “Why Lord?! Why!? What am I supposed to do!? Why is all of this happening to me?! I haven't done anything wrong to deserve any of this?! Why me?!” He sat there on his knees crying into the ground just about to lose all semblance of humanity when all of a sudden a voice came over the Chief's radio that he had left sitting on the kitchen table.
“Chief. Come in Chief.”
Grigsby jumped to his feet and grabbed the radio answering, “Whose there? This is Grigsby. Come in.”
“Where is the Chief? Clancy is missing. He never showed up to the station.”
Grigsby stood there for a second thinking to himself, “Didn't the Chief ask one of the men to drop by his place to pick something up for him? YES HE DID!” He dropped the radio and grabbed the gun that the Chief also left sitting on the kitchen table and darted for the front door.
“Hello? Hello? Are you still there? Grigsby? Grigsby?” Came shouting from the radio, but he was already gone, tearing through the barrier that was the front door and screaming down the driveway in his car.
“Where is the Chief? Grigsby?” But there was no answer.
Grigsby was enraged with anger and fear at this point and figured that maybe he would get some revenge on these children when he reached the Chief's house. Hopefully he would find them there and kill them himself. He pulled up to the Chief's house in record time and noticed that there was an abandoned police cruiser sitting in the driveway. He jumped out of the car leaving the engine running and lights on. He slowly walked up to the front porch, gun in hand and shaking from both the fear and adrenaline that were flowing through his veins. “Am I really at the point where I am willing to kill a child, let alone three children? If it would even work, I'm not even 100% sure that these children are even human.” Grigsby stopped at the bottom of the porch stairs and put his hands on his knees, “This is it! Those children must pay for what they have done. Let's just hope that I can get them before they get me!” He thought to himself as he gathered the courage to ascend the stairs. He put one foot on the bottom stair making a horrific creaking noise that penetrated through the dark silent night. “Great! Now they will for sure know that I am here!” But he couldn't stop; nothing was going to get in his way of redemption so he continued on one step at a time until he reached the front door. He noticed that it was already open, just cracked, so he slowly pushed the door open with his left hand, and pointing the gun into the home with the other, ready to take down whoever was inside. Grigsby dropped the gun and fell to his knees when he finally got the front door open. The sight that was in front of him was both familiar and horrific all at the same time. There was a police officer strung up in the hallway, just exactly as Andy had been strung up in the basement of the police station? His intestines and blood were splayed out all over the floor and walls. “What sort of human being could do something like this?” He thought to himself.
“Freeze!! DON'T MOVE!” Arose a voice from behind him.
Grigsby couldn't do much of anything but sit there on his knees looking up at the horror that was displayed in front of him, thinking to himself, “Is this what is in my future and the Chief's future. Has this already happened to the Chief?”
“Place your arms behind your back! You are under arrest!” Shouted the man who was now five feet away from him.
Grigsby saw no other alternative so he calmly complied with what the officer was requesting. At that moment another cop came running into the house behind the two of them.
“JESUS CHRIST! WHAT THE FUCK!” He shouted bending over clasping the wall and puking all over the floor.
“God Dammit Percy! Get The FUCK out of here. You're contaminating the crime scene!” Yelled the officer who was in the middle of trying to handcuff Grigsby.
Percy gathered himself and stumbled out of the house still puking as he was leaving.
“Get up you sick son of a bitch!” Shouted the officer, trying to force him to his feet.
He walked Grigsby down to his car and placed him in the backseat. By this time the entire neighborhood was alive in the streets waiting to gain a glimpse of the chaos that was going on. “Percy! Get over here! Percy!” Shouted the officer.
“Yes sir, what do you need?” Answered Percy as he ran over to see what the other officer needed.
“I need you to tape off this scene and keep people away while I take our suspect to the police station and lock him up. Backup will be here shortly, but whatever you do, do not let anyone past the lines and contaminate the crime scene anymore than you have already done! You understand me son?”
“Yes Sir!” Shouted Percy as he ran back to his cruiser and started grabbing crime scene tape to tape off the area.
The other officer climbed into his car and started it up. “You have a reckoning coming for you boy! You have no idea what is in store for you. I will see that you either hang or burn for what you have done to Clancy, and who knows what yet to the Chief!”
Grigsby was still so in shock and utterly out of determination that he just sat there with this head down and didn't say a thing. “At least that would be a better fate than what the children would have in store for me,” he thought to himself.
They drove off down the street, the whole while Grigsby could only think of one thing. That the fates of Andy and Clancy were going to be the same fate that he had in store for himself. How was he going to stop happening to him what had happened to them.
“This is Officer Douglas. I need immediate backup to Chief Burton's private residence for public deterrence and a crime scene unit for analysis. Over.”
“Roger that. Backup and crime scene units are on their way,” replied a woman's voice over the CB radio that Officer Douglas was using.
The ride to the station didn't seem to take any time at all. It felt as if the officer were traveling 1000 miles an hour. When they finally arrived at the station, Officer Douglas pulled around back and parked the car behind the building. He turned around and looked at Grigsby. “You're a sick son of a bitch. You know that right?” He said, then turned back around and opened up his door. The next thing Grigsby knew was that officer Douglas was trying to pull him out of the backseat and threw him up against the back wall of the police station. He pulled out his night stick and jammed it so hard into Grigsby's stomach that he fell to the ground gasping for breath. Officer Douglas then kicked him in the face and hit him over the side a couple of times with his night stick before picking him back up. Grigsby now had blood all over his face and what felt like several broken ribs. He said nothing, though, because he knew that it would be useless to try and explain everything that was going on and his innocence. The only person that would believe and understand him was now a missing person which he was responsible for.
The officer opened up the back door to the police station and ushered Grigsby down an ever so familiar set of stairs that led to the basement holding cells. He opened up one of the cells and threw Grigsby inside. “This place should seem familiar to you! You bastard!” Shouted Officer Douglas as he locked the cell back up and started walking back up the stairs towards the front of the police station.
Grigsby was now more alone than he had ever been in his entire life. He sat down in the back corner of the cell and just started crying uncontrollably. He felt as if he had lost all hope for his life and soul. “It's just a matter of time now before my fate reflects the fates of the ones I let get close to me.” He thought to himself. In no time at all he found himself falling asleep from the sheer exhaustion and pain that he was in.
