James Rasile liked the forum thread, change in author royalties? when?
First time poster, long time lurker. As many of you may know, I am author of The Astronaut Instruction Manual. Seeing as this change in author royalties has a rather profound affect on me, I feel qualified to interject on this topic.

Essentially, the change is active immediately. And in nearly all cases–including for the larger part my own–this will be consensually retroactive.

Meaning, new terms have been created for authors and funding writers and they are going to affect new deals as well as established successes.

So you would think I’d be upset about that, right? Well, surprise, I’m not upset. In fact, I’m thrilled.

In a past life I did businesses. Lots of them. Some losers. Some winners. Some even lucrative. All–and I mean all–were great learning experiences.

When I got my deal with Inkshares I thought this is crazy. It was literally too good to be true. You cannot run a company on those margins. It is impossible. After the process of creating my funding book, I knew I was right. There is no doubt in my mind, Inkshares put around $30-$50k into my book while pulling only about $10k in funding and pre-sales. I’m no math genius but I’m a whiz at addition and subtraction, and those numbers don’t match up.

Retrospectively, even now, going into our third printing of The AIM, I know Inkshares hasn’t made its money back. Yet.

Of course, if I were an evil genius I’d being going BWAA-HAA-HA-HAA-HA right now. However, I’m not an evil genius. I’m not even a genius. I’m an astronaut teacher and author and Inkshares is my publisher who has done an absolutely astounding job of impacting the marketplace with my book: Third printing, audiobook deal with Penguin Random House, and of course the tv series deal with Legendary. Plus the creative freedom and rights I retain as writer and creator? Plus we are now working on THE COMIC BOOK (!!!)?

Wow.

To quote from Kurt Vonnegut, "If this isn’t good, I don’t know what is."

Without Inkshares, I would have none of this. I LOVE INKSHARES. I WANT INKSHARES TO SUCCEED EVEN MORE. So if I have to make fair adjustments to secure and guarantee even more and greater success, I’ll tell you what I told  @Adam Gomolin:

“Count me in.”

And Adam had made it very clear. If the deal didn’t look good to me or if I thought I could find a better deal somewhere else, he’d help me with an exit strategy.

PFFFFFFFFFT. Me exit Inkshares? Yeah right! No sir-ree-bob, I’m here to stay. I love the culture, I love the attitude, I love my fellow authors (@JF Dubeau, @Jamison Stone, @Gary Whitta, @Jim McDoniel I’m talking to you), I love the camaraderie, I love the community, and most of all I LOVE BEING AN INKSHARES AUTHOR.

The most telling fact I can share is everyone I know and love is staying put. What more, last week I think Inkshares had over 1000+ new book campaigns started. That means even more new awesome authors to share in this wonderful new model. ("Traditional publishing with crowdfunding front-end" I tell my friends.) We started Inkshares together. We have succeeded together. And we are now evolving together. Yes, I’m staying.

Heck, where would I go that is any more fun (and profitable and empowering and authenticating) than Inkshares? Like Montgomery Scott says in JJ Abram’s 2009 Star Trek reboot, "I like this ship. It’s exciting!"

–

PS one last thing. Speaking of awesome new authors, while I’m here I just want to shoutout a book and author being funded that has caught my (generally behind the scenes) attention. It is @Evan Graham’s Tantalus Depths.
Being an established author around here means you get to call the actual Inkshares’ Head Honchos and say, "Hey, I think you should take a look at this project." Which I did today about Tantalus Depths.
And like I told Adam, and while it may be early and maybe I’m wrong what do I know but in my opinion I think Evan writing and dialog is terrific and I think Evan has what it takes to win a Hugo.
We’re Inkshares. Like a big extended family or even a non-sucky high school. Let’s see what we can do about getting Tantalus Depths funded, ok? He’s close! Back Tantalus Depths and then spread the word on FB and Twitter.
Alright. Thanks and keep up the good work, everybody!

Just a quick one for now.  Prior to my campaign I had stated that for every 50 followers I would upload a new chapter, and this first week of the campaign/contest has seen me sprint past 350 followers.  That means I’ll be uploading at least 1 chapter tomorrow.  I’d also been debating with myself whether or not to continue uploading chapters since I already have quite a large amount posted.  Truth is that I like sharing my story and world too much not to keep uploading.  Since I’m now in a campaign though, from this point on I’ll be basing chapter uploads on number of new people who’ve ordered rather than number of followers.  For every 25 new readers I’ll upload a chapter, and since we’ve already hit 25 readers that means I have a 2nd new chapter to upload.  I’ll be uploading those tomorrow.

That’s all I’ve got for now.  Look for a real update on Tuesday, and as always thanks for your time and keep reading!

James Rasile liked an update for Witherfist

      Hello all!

As promised in yesterday’s update, I’ve just added the first (draft) chapter of Witherfist to the project page: https://www.inkshares.com/books/witherfist

This short chapter introduces one of the two main characters, Irusai - better known as Witherfist, the warrior-scribe and former territorial lord of the Last Empire. In this chapter, we find Irusai outside of the reach of the Empire and in less than ideal circumstances.

If you have any feedback, I’d love to hear it - especially if you think there is some element of  the writing that could be improved, in any way.

As always, if you know anyone who’d get a kick out of what I’m writing, please share the link to the book with them.

With just one more pre-order, I’ll have 10 pre-orders - could you be the person to take Witherfist into double-figures? ;)

       Thanks again for your support!

       ~ Jenny

James Rasile liked an update for To Live and Die in Avalon

THIS IS THE LAST DAY TO PRE-ORDER!

One final push and then that’s it! We have mere hours left to make it to Quill, please help!

So, what happens if we don’t make it? I can assure you it won’t be the end for To Live and Die in Avalon, but this is our last chance to have it published through Inkshares as part of the Quill collection. Depending on how things turn out I will have another update tomorrow and we’ll talk about where things go from here.

On a whim, I entered the Nerdist Space Opera contest with what was only a rough idea for a novel and I have watched it grow and evolve over time into something I can really be proud of and determined to see published. As it stands the second draft of the novel is a little over 75k words and still evolving. I have learned so much about the process of writing and promoting a novel, made a lot of great friends in the Inkshares community and have seen the plethora of opportunities available for indie authors if they are brave enough to go after them.

I have a draft for a fantasy novel on the site which I’m debating entering into the Geek and Sundry contest, but contests are an all-consuming endeavor and I’m not sure I’m up to another one at this point in time. But, rest assured, that other novel will grow and evolve into something substantial over time, just as Avalon has, now that I have gained the skills, drive and support network that helped me complete my first book. You can check out that draft here: https://www.inkshares.com/books/aurasong-blue-sword

That’s all I have for now. I will have one final update tomorrow, depending on the outcome of the campaign. Thank you all for your encouragement and support!

Plus... I’m going to start putting artwork up at all these places where it’s a bit easier to organize. For the sequel: Dystopia. I hear-by promise I shall not spam thee. I will only update either Dawn, or Dystopia once a week, on alternating weeks. You’ll get mail from me, but I dare not send you two messages within the same week, after this week.

Lastly: I’ve got my next artist piece from The Art of Rachel Perciphone. Here is the Council of Death Lords, leaders of the Unification.

            Good Morning Dreamers,

Well, getting all the details of a move together, finding a new place, starting school again, starting work again, and a million other details. Unfortunately the pre-orders also slowed down with my inability to market it, but we are still passed the pre-orders fro Quill! I think we could perhaps still make the full goal, but this is still an amazing victory already.

Thank you for your support, and please continue to recommend and share. If you haven’t pre-ordered already you should to receive the benefits!

7 days left!  All funded, but if you’re looking to jump in, I’d love it if you did!

These are two more of the races in the world.  I will say that this first book focusses on elves (specifically Sophielecent elves and their wards) and bugbears but is peopled by a plethora of rich and fascinating cultures.  Below are two more.  Tomorrow, I’ll have another pair up!

I wish y’all a fantastic time with everything in life!  I’ve been blown away by the support and genuine love expressed and wish, in whatever way I may, to reflect that same affection back into the community.  Know y’all go forth with my blessing, in addition to the myriad others you’ve earned.

              Trolls

Ogres are typically a cave dwelling, largely solitary race, though they have a history of getting on very well with orcs. They are highly social with one another and have rich cultural provisions for visitors to their ranges. Their communities, if such a term can be applied, are composed of dozens of small territories and a central neutral zone wherein they may come to gather and intermingle.

Ogres require precision and order in their lives. Any deviation in the normal ebb and flow of their territories is seen as a mortal offence and they usually hate the clutter humans create. Nonetheless, if a mutt stumbles onto a range, it is often adopted and trained to properly exist within the culture.

Unlike other races, ogres are raised in an intricate manner, spending a little of their youth with each of the mature adults bordering the central neutral area. There is not so much a culture of dominance as a culture of rigid territorial rights. Banishment is normalized; if an ogre reaches adulthood and no territories are presently available and unclaimed, they are sent away. These individuals either gravitate to the city, find acceptance in another cluster of territories or begin their own cluster, if an area has space for this. It is usually from these new clusters and from the city dwelling ogres that mutts occur. Being highly social, they do not enjoy isolation and will take comfort in interacting with small homesteads and with clearly defined neighbors.

Additionally, ogres are inherently gifted with changing the flow of arcane energies, which makes them masters at crafting the arcane bombs favored by the kalutai. A proficient, older ogre can usually negate all arcana in an area surrounding it with nothing more than a burst of concentrations. Conversely, they can cause arcana to surge in a region, creating wild growth and genetic instability in local flora and fauna at will.

              Hobgoblins

Hobgoblin society is fiercely matriarchal, with males performing periphery tasks and usually being lighter and slighter of frame than their female counterparts.  They make up for this by generally being a little taller than the women, and the males are usually very easy going with all races, be they Hard or Soft, while the women tend to be hypercritical and slow to trust.

Hobgoblin women, as with most Hard Races, select their mates.  Unlike most other races, these pairings, usually made for life, are just as likely to be made between differing genders a they are to be between a male and a female.  Genetics are not valued overmuch and a mother often has chldren sired by many different males, though her designated mate will be the father figure -- or secondary mother figure -- to her young.  While both parents raise their young, the entire community sees to the wellfare of all hobgoblin children as a matter of course.  It is often said that there are no hobgoblin orphans, just children with a new set of parents. The culture also values architecture, mathematical concepts and sculpture.

Hobgoblins usually range in height from a little over six feet to a little under seven, have mottled, two toned skin, like light reflecting off a river, and regularly intermingle with other groups of Hard races.  While protective of any area wherein their young roam, they do not maintain rigid territorial barriers and often allow intruders to trespass without incident, provided the interlopers move off without causing undue harm.  If they seem inclined to linger, a few males will be sent out to test them for general levels of friendliness and, if they are fairly docile, will often incorporate their settlements or migratory routes into the community’s territorial range.

James Rasile liked an update for Scarlet

                  Good morning, rebels!

As the 6th day of the contest opens, I’m feeling pretty good about the plan I have set out for Scarlet. While it may not reach the leaderboards by the end of this week, there are several other chances I can capitalize on. However, the point of this update isn’t about the leaderboards--it’s about the Forgotten Stories. I will be uploading Noctis’ story around late evening--I’m hoping, and it covers his life just before everything fell apart. Whether the chapter will be short or long will depend upon the length I’m willing to expose. There will only be two characters in the chapter--Noctis, and his older sister, Celestina. Over the many drafts and completed chapters I’ve done concerning this book, I’ve always tried making Noctis the dare-devil/heroic guy of the group. Always leaping into danger, pulling off stunts only he could do, and being there to assist Scarlet in her time of need as her most trusted ally. In the chapter, you’ll see a side of Noctis you wouldn’t see in the main storyline. Thanks for reading, and remember...stay rebellious!

                  From yours truly. A.J.III.
