Happy Friday!!

I am super, super excited to tell you guys that The Living God met it’s Quill Goal with 252 orders! My brain still finds it too good to be true and I have a hard time getting the words into my mind much less out of my mouth, but... The Living God will be published!

We didn’t win the Geek & Sundry Fantasy Contest, and we have yet to reach the 750 mark, so it won’t be getting mass-distribution or marketing, but it will be published. If it happens to reach the 750 mark, that would be amazing, but I’m perfectly happy with limited distribution.  

I’ve spent most of my private and professional life helping people make their dreams come true, often putting my own on hold for their sake. I just love helping people, and it brings me joy. But, at the end of last year I made a promise to myself to finally put one of my dreams first. I cannot express to you what it means to me to be able to say that I finally accomplished a goal I’ve dreamed about since I realized I loved storytelling so much. I have you guys to thank for that.

The Living God is going to go through some heavy content and copy editing in the next month, and the campaign isn’t over until December. This gives me some time to try and get to 750, but I’ll be honest with you... I don’t know that many people. I could use your help on that front. If you could pass the word on, share it with others and encourage others to grab their copy, I’d greatly appreciate it.

    So it begins! A fierce five days of Outlining and preparation for National Novel Writing Month!

    The plan is to finish up the third draft of The Lore of the Aos Sí and then it’s on to the second draft of Electric Messiah. The usual goal is to write 50,000 words in the month of November. I am going to be shooting for around 120,000. It is an ambitious goal for sure, but writing 50,000 words seems like a weekly goal if one is well prepared and focused.

    Coffee will be my greatest ally in this fight against the abyss of blank pages! I will need to summon a great cauldron full of the elixir of life if I am to conquer the deep dark abyss.

    The Lore of the Aos Sí is available for Pre-Order on Inkshares through January 1st! IF You were planning on being a part of its publication there is no better time than the present! I must hit that magical 250 mark in order for this book to see proper publication.Just 174 more backers needed. November will be a big push and my goal is to be at least to the 200 mark by the end of November.

    I need your opinion. I was thinking that as a perk for hitting #100 by the end of October, in addition to raffling off some prizes, I was thinking I might give you all a glimpse of the sequel in the form of an outline and some excerpts? What do you think? Let me know

      I found this in a library in the Ancient Heights, somewhere beneath the earth and stone. It is incomplete compared to the scrolls within the Acropolis, but it does shed light on many key events in the realm of Tír na nÓg. 

      The Golden Age


      11500 BCE - The Peak of the Golden Age of Man the Eternal City of Formene is founded.
      9500 BCE - The Goddess Rested
      9000 BCE - Adam Breaks his Covenant
      8000 BCE - The Acropolis is constructed
      7500 BCE - The Goddess Wakes and Adam’s Rebellion begins. The Goddess forges The Fist and uses the Womb of Creation to give birth to the Fair Folk.
      7000 BCE - Druid’s Oath is Constructed
      6705 BCE - The Battle for the Eternal City takes place.  Adam is slain by Dagda.


      The Silver Age


      6700 BCE - The Reign of King Dagda Starlight Begins. Three millennia of relative peace ensue between man and the fair folk. The descendants of Adam that have not been captured flee to the farthest corners of the world not to be seen in Tír na nÓg for millennia.
      6695 BCE - The Houses and Courts of the Conclave are established.
      6694 BCE - The Aélfar settle in the Vale and begin the construction of Moon Grove
      6680 BCE - The Jótun settle in the Shimmering Peaks, fortifying the ancient citadel of the Forbidden Crags.

      4450 BCE - The Third Dorcha ends. Ballaton of the Seraephym lays the final blow to the spirit of Salos.
      4252 BCE - The future Ensí of the Empyrean Cult of Sumer is born as Ubara-tutu in the land of Sumer.
      3500 BCE - The Waverunners find a pathway leading from Tír na nÓg to Tír na Beo at Godwit’s Reach.  Birds from the other world have made their way to Tír na nÓg.
      3450 BCE - Penitents Vow is settled. Humans form the religion of Penance for their sins. Millions flock to the new religion making the pilgrimage through the Ancient Heights and the Wailing Wastes of the Western Reaches. The Exodus to the Western Reaches causes more strife between mankind and the fair folk.
      3260 BCE - Ensí Ubara-Tutu ascends to lead the Empyrean Cult of Tiamat in Sumer.  He convinces his followers to leave Sumer to reclaim the land of Adam.  They embark on a 40 year long voyage across the void, conquering and enslaving as they wander.
      3100 BCE - The Empyrean Fleet is scuttled on the shores of the Sea of Mere along the Neck of the Vale. A skirmish ensues but the interloping humans are given safe harbor by King Dagda to settle on the other side of the River of Orlond. The Fourth Dorcha known as the silent darkness begins.
      3098 BCE - Small numbers of the Aélfar begin to go missing
      3063 BCE - The Iron King’s Rebellion begins
      3062 BCE - The Iron King’s forces are defeated in the field at the Battle of the Broken Tower Winguric Ironwood is defeated and slain in a mine shaft.
      3062 BCE - Under the Hazel Moon - Yaegar Ironwood is born to Winguric and Máire Ironwood. He is taken from Máire at birth.  She is believed to have been killed while resisting the Oak Watch who took Yaegar. Yaegar is given to a family in the East Quarter of Formene, he grows up in poverty and crime.
      3055 BCE - Under a Willow Moon Renwick Waveborne is born somewhere on the waves of the Void.
      3022 BCE - Under an Oak Moon, Morika the 23rd Incarnation of the Druid Priestess Pythia is born.
      3020 BCE - House Stonehome begins purchasing enslaved humans to do labor within the mines beneath the Ancient Heights.  They delve too deep and open pathways to the Kobold Underworld. They keep the threat at bay and keep it secret from the other Houses of Tír na nÓg.
      3018 BCE - Samsara : Under a Beech Moon, Phaero : Under a Blackthorn Moon, Arabella : Under a Rowan Moon, and Nastas : Under an Alder Moon are born.
      3015 BCE - Settlements begin to disappear without a trace in the Shimmering Peaks. Most turn a blind eye.
      3002 BCE - The events of The Lore of the Aos Sí

        Halloween Update! Today’s lore is going to be about Vampires... because... well..

        So... onto The Staking of Vampires

        Vampires have undergone significant evolution since their initial debuts in legend. The book, Vampire Evolution from Myth to Modern Day, covers their transformation in great detail. From old tales depicting vampires as reanimated corpses, wraiths dressed in tattered burial shrouds, or even Japanese folklore. But commonly today, the stake through the heart is seen as a metaphorical silver bullet to the vampire. From catatonic immobilization to instant destruction—the current legend is flashier than its origin.

        The belief was that corpses, were crawling out of their coffins, and feasting on their relatives. So burial practices simply advised nailing the corpse to the bottom of the coffin. It didn’t need to be wood or even through the heart. A steel stake or a rock, driven through the rib cage would suffice—almost like pitching a tent. Which, ultimately, seems a lot smarter than trying to stake a vampire who is currently active and wields powers of the undead. A bit of pre-emptive action and safety measures regarding the undead never hurt anyone. 

        Next week I’ll cover Trick-Or-Treating or the Witchfinder General. I’m saving some Seventh Age news for later and closer to launch date. So for now..

          From reading the launch announcement it appears that the guys intend to use a broad range of user and visitor statistics to drive a multidimensional scoring and ranking system. These can be quite maths heavy, furthermore it can take some time to work out a set of weightings for each measured factor that achieves a fair and  unbiased result. In my experience the initial beautiful idea can rapidly turn into a nightmare at execution.

          This gets even worse if they decide to also include metrics from outside the  Inkshares platform.

          Either way up it might take a while before the guys feel comfortable in acting on the results of their calculations.

          Mind you, if they unexpectedly approach me tomorrow with a proposal I’m not going to reject them out of hand ! 😀

              That’s good to know, thanks! Now, I want to know a bit about what happens when I start pre-orders. As I understand, no editing happens until I hit a goal of 250 orders (or better yet, 750).

              Seems like a bit of a Catch-22: the book has to be good enough to gather pre-orders, but enough pre-orders will pay for editing that makes it better.

              So it still seems like I’ll be hiring and paying for an editor myself, since I want the samples I give out in advertisement to represent the best possible work. Does this seem to be the case for successful authors around here?

                So I know I’ve been saying how excited I am to have finally hit Quill and to know that my book will be in the hands of actual people sometime in the near future. But, honestly, I don’t think it hit me until today.

                On the way home from work I had to pull over because I was suddenly, intensely aware of how much work it has taken to come this far. I saw every word I wrote, erased, re-wrote, re-erased, and re-re-wrote. Every character I sketched into notebooks and introduced to paper, as ready to tell their story as a child on the first day of school. I saw every excited key stroke as I experienced new events and people that screamed at me to make them real. I saw every moment of anticipation as I waited for my betas to respond. A thousand smiles when they praised something they liked or offered advice to make the story better. Every bit of terror as I wrote out queries, and more anticipation as I waited for a response. I re-experienced each and every time my heart dropped into my stomach at an agent’s rejection. And another. And another. The determined flits of my fingers as I turned each letter into a different origami animal to add to the ever-growing zoo. I felt that tiny spark of hope that glimmered when someone finally told me what was wrong with the original manuscript. Too long. Too long. The fevered dash to correct the issue-- erasing entire chapters, people, subplots. The tearful goodbyes as I deleted entire lives so that the others might have a fighting chance. The uncertainty of trying a less-than-traditional publisher. The soul-crushing doubt for each day I didn’t get a single pre-order. The amazement each time I did.

                And it all brought me to... this. Laughing and sobbing on the side of the road, tears streaking my face even as my cheeks hurt from smiling. Amazed and relieved and humbled all at once.

                It’s indescribable. Thank you.
