Look at your first book like it’s a business. Be prepared to lose money on it when it all shakes out, but spend your money wisely, on investments that will grow your career more than sell some copies of your book.

I wouldn’t spend a single cent more on marketing while your book is crowdfunding. People won’t bite if they don’t know you. That’s just the nature of crowdfunding something like a book instead of the next amazing must-have Kickstarter invention. Buzz won’t spread no matter how enticing your book is, because at the end of the day it’s still a book and not a 3D printer that also is a drone that also cleans your house. Word of mouth and personal appeals are exponentially more effective, and they’re free, so concentrate on that.

Instead, save your money for a publicist for when the book is funded and ready to leave production. Play in the press is far more valuable than anything you can get from advertising on social media. Get someone who knows how to do that for you. Additionally, shore away additional funds for awards contests. Even if they don’t net you a single sale, getting nominated for (and/or winning) awards is immensely good for your credibility if you want to use your first book as a springboard for an agent and a career.

    Hi Evan,

Sorry mate, I’ll try to clarify my situation.  I realise that I won’t see any money until the book’s published, and I realise it’s not a spend money to make money situation.

    But things add up.
Cover art, book trailers, flyers, business cards, printing, reciprocal purchases.

And since I’m completely new to any kind of marketing, I also tried my luck with promoted posts on facebook, twitter, etc.  I had exactly the same results you did; plenty of clicks but very little conversion.  But I still had to give it a go so I could at least say I tried it, and that amounted to $100 on it’s own.

I’m not concerned with most of these costs as I figure many of them come with their own pay-off.  I just don’t want to spend more money than I’m likely to earn back, because if that’s the case I’m potentially better off self-publishing.

Eric H. Heisner liked an update for Shadow King
Hello, hello! I hope you’re all well.

This is just a quick update for everyone on what’s been going on (or not) with me and "Shadow King" since my April update.

There is not a lot to report. I’m still in the queue with Inkshares waiting for an editor to be available. HOWEVER, I saw in an update from another author it looks like her book has started to move forward in the process. I’ve asked the wonderful Angela at Inkshares what that might mean for my book, and I know she’s looking into that. So, with luck, I’ll have a little more info to share on that front in the not-too-distant future.

Sales have flattened temporarily and I’m trying to figure out ways to make my numbers start to tick up again.

In the meantime, I’m happy to let you all know that I have entered a new manuscript in the 2017 Launchpad Manuscript Competition. The competition is still open for entries and later this summer/fall they will start to announce their finalists list. I’m really excited to be part of Launchpad again and am looking forward to sharing details of the new story with all of you in the upcoming weeks.

With that, I will sign off for now -- have a wonderful weekend!

      Best,
      Susan

Eric H. Heisner liked an update for Mission 51

This update is for all the wonderful people who supported me and Mission 51 with a pre-order in 2016. Those pre-orders are gone!

First of all, thank you again for your love and pre-orders when Mission 51 first broke on the scene last year.  128 generous supporters bought 183 pre-orders between February and July of 2016. But all of those pre-orders were returned when I intentionally took the book out of funding last summer. At that time, Inkshares refunded each person for their pre-order purchases. If you were among those early supporters of Mission 51, you should have received your refund sometime in July or August of 2016. Please check your accounts to be sure you indeed received the refund from Inkshares. If there is any question, let me know and I will pursue it.

Mission 51 is now back and better than ever! I have entered the novel in the latest Inkshares Sci-Fi contest and it is again taking pre-orders.

It is my hope that many, most, or all of Mission 51’s previous supporters will again find it in their hearts to support it again. You will have to place your pre-orders again, as the pre-orders from last year are no longer in place.

Let me know if you have any questions about this. You can email me at ferdcrotte@mac.com.

I am sincerely grateful for all the love and support you have given me. Our Mission 51 family rocks! :D

Hi, there! It’s so nice that you care! Thanks for asking.

Things are DEFINITELY starting to look better.

Originally we were all pretty sure I wasn’t going to make it. I had a cough for almost a year and they found cancer in my throat and lungs. There was a lesion in my left lung the size of a silver dollar (probably caused by second-hand smoke).

That lesion is down to the size of a nickel now. A NICKEL. I can’t believe it. I hit my assumed "expiration date" 9 days ago. The doctors are optimistic I’ll pull through. :)

I’m still sad about some of the things that I had to put down while I worked towards recovery, though. (I won’t lie-- every part of this process is horrible and I hate it.) I had to basically stop working on my campaign as I got sicker and weaker, which I think is the main reason why I didn’t push up to a higher spot in the G&S contest I’d entered (I think I ended at... 4th place in that HUGE fantasy contest). I really think I could have hit full publication if I had tried harder. I also know that I’d been nominated for several syndicates right before the end of my campaign, but because we all thought I was going to die I decided not to extend and lost those possible pre-orders. I really thought that I had lost all chance of ever seeing this book become real.

But now, thanks to the wonderful and understanding people at Inkshares, The Last Faoii might be out as early as August or September, and it looks like I’ll be alive to see it on my bookshelf at home! I do have 2 major hospital visits between here and there, though, so of course I’m still a little worried. But overall, I think that I’m going to make it. I feel alive and ready to go back to war for this book. I feel like a faoii. ;)

Thank you so much for your concern. I hope that my story and my faoii updates help to inspire other people and their campaigns. It’s a tough road, but it’s worth it. :)

(Oh-- and if anyone is reading this and is angry at me for jumping queue and probably setting your own production back, I am SO SO SORRY. I absolutely did not mean to make anyone’s campaigns harder than they already are. Really.)

Welcome to Inkshares! We have a very supportive author community here, but sometimes the forum isn’t the best way to communicate. There is a community Slack which has been set up for questions, fun, and networking - and we’d love to invite you to it!

Just DM @C. Brennecke , myself, @Michael Haase , @Alisa King  , @Evan Graham , @Craig A. Munro  or @Regina McMenomy, Ph.D. with your email and we will set you up!
