Condiment Each Other

’Condiment: salt and paper.’ - Me

As you can see above, I’ve set up quite a pun-ny pickup line.

’You know, we condiment each other like salt and pepper!’ Eh? Come on, it’s pretty good.

But pickup line aside, no, I didn’t make any errors in my definition. Yes, I spelt ’pepper’ as ’paper’... and you’ll see why shortly. But first, let me introduce you to someone. Her name is Seanna.

If Thom was salt, Seanna would be pepper.

Who is this Seanna person I’m talking about? I mentioned her just last week. And if you read that backer update, let me make it clear that I’m not hinting at a romance plot in The Slave Prince. Why would I do that? Seriously. I’m not. There isn’t even one. I’m not lying. Trust me.

Condiment-ing one another doesn’t have to be romantic. Chemistry doesn’t only exist between lovers. Family and friends can compliment each other too! But to not spoil the book any further, I’ll just leave it as that. All you need to know is that Seanna is pepper, and Thom is salt. (I’m such a tease, I know.)

Now on to why I intentionally misspelt ’pepper’.

The Malaysian stationery brand, Salt x Paper has generously offered 5 cash vouchers, worth RM20 (*USD5) each, to 5 readers of The Slave Prince. Salt x Paper creates the most artistic, cute, and fun stationery I’ve ever seen. And with a cash voucher, you can grab more than one of their items for free! I recommend the notebooks.

The owner, Chrystin, is someone I’ve known for many years. She started this creative business last December, and has already been raved about in Malaysia. As a fellow Malaysian, a fellow LUCT-ian, and a fellow ENCM-ian, (yes, we have a few ties), I’m proud to know someone so creative and to have her extended support too.

So grab yourself a copy of The Slave Prince on your way out! It’s worth the giveaway, trust me :) What better place to write your own heroic and possibly romantic tale than in such beautiful notebooks.

Here’s a little excerpt of what I’m editing, with its not to Arthur C. Clarke.

    ***

Rene sat himself at another console and ran his hands blindly over the controls with accuracy borne of countless repetition.  “So, I hear you’re an engineer.”

    Daedalus shrugged.

“We definitely need someone like you.”

“It seems like you need a lot of things, here.”

“Alors.” Rene screwed up his mouth. “I don’t even know what I’m looking for here. And I wouldn’t trust this shit to find it for me, anyway.”

He punched up the surveillance from the corridor where Sargas escaped his cell.

“Look at this,” he called to Daedalus, who brought his attention to the scene of Sargas stepping out of the cell only to be bombarded by weapons fire.

“Wow,” Daedalus remarked as he watched the energy blasts fail to cause any damage. “What do you suppose that is?”

“Looks like he’s got some kind of force field … some kind of disparate energy that negates our weapons. But he’s got no tech on him … I mean, he’s naked. Unless it’s up his ass or something.”

Rene was not far off, although the technology wasn’t located in only one place within Sargas’ body. The Von Neumann nanomachines in his blood self-replicated and could be secreted through his pores, coating his skin, then activated via nervous response to act as fractal camouflage that effectively rendered him invisible.

“Some kind of massive kinetic discharge is all I can guess,” Rene continued. “EM interference. I don’t know. That … or magic.”

    “Psh… Magic,” Daedalus scoffed.

“What’s the difference, really?" asked Rene. "Like telepathy is easier to get your head around? It’s all magic; it’s all incomprehensible shit that defies explanation. The word is just the catch-all for ‘I don’t know how the fuck he did it—’ Holy shit! Look!” Rene pointed at the screen as Sargas metamorphosed into the fierce, naked alien creature.

“How do you suppose he did that?” asked Daedalus.

Rene shrugged. “Je ne sais pas. Maybe some kind of camouflage that let’s him project different appearances.” Again, his inference was correct; the nanomachines could also transmit a holographic image of whatever the host desired to project.

“Do you know who that is?” Daedalus asked.

“It’s the same guy as before, just … different.”

“No. That ... whatever it is … looks just like Darek Marseh.”

“The red Emperor …” Rene said, unconvinced. “You think he’s masquerading as a, uh, well-hung human male?”

“All I know is that thing looks like every representation of Marseh I’ve ever seen or heard of. The drawings, the word-of-mouth accounts.”

Rene sighed and got up from the console. “So, what now?”

Daedalus asked. “Let’s go find His Royal Highness.”

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for Black Cloud

Hello! You first 65 followers are the best. I really appreciate you all jumping in early and following the book. Honestly, I’ve had so much more positive feedback than I expected. It’s pretty awesome.

I shot a first attempt at a promo video for the book last night with the help of a paramedic buddy. I’m not sure how well it went but when I get it edited I’ll share it with all of you and see what you think. At this point I’m at the "gather followers" stage of the game. So if any of you feel inclined to spread the word, I would greatly appreciate it!

Here’s a little treat for following the book. Black Cloud is fiction but throughout the campaign I thought it would be fun to share little real world stuff from time to time. So here is today’s:

A couple weeks ago a patient had the following exchange with one of our local ER docs.

Doc: "So what brought you into the ER today?"

        Patient: "I have kidney problems."

Doc: "Ok, what kind of kidney problems?"

Patient: "Well I had a dream that a falcon swooped down and ate my kidneys so I Googled it and it said that means I have kidney problems."

After the doctor had left the room I asked him what he was going to do. He smiled at me and said, "I guess I’ll check her kidneys."

As a writer it makes me jealous that you I can’t make up stuff as crazy as that. That’s it for now guys. Have a good one!

          Dear Readers,

So after a few (okay, a lot of) orders disappearing because of issues with credits, we are now (again) officially 20% of the way to full funding.

          .

Between now and the end of the month I will be uploading chapters to celebrate milestones. Today, Chapter 4 went up to celebrate my 151st order, so when the 200th hits my inbox, I’ll upload Chapter 5, which (spoilers) is when the witch hits the road finally.

With that in mind, I want to shout out to the following people for their recent preorders:

Amanda Orneck (author of Deus Ex Machina)
Helena and Malena (authors of Sparked)
Jane-Holly Meissner (author of Fae Child)

And Ben fucking Luntz, who preordered 3 copies like the hero that he is.

You are all the best supporters an unheard-of author could ask for. I’ll be thinking of y’all while I crank out the 10,000 words I told myself I would write today.

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for Bad Medicine: Slay it queen!

                Friends and drag enthusiasts

Funding campaigns are a lot like Jennifer Aniston’s career. Somedays people are raving and can’t get enough of you, and some others they roll their eyes and wonder why you just don’t quit. Same as Jennifer Aniston I’m not a quitter. Also, I have great hair and often have to explain to people that I’m not pregnant just bloated; but I digress.

The point is the last two weeks have been like Friends. I have enjoyed your encouragement and support and dreamed of the possibility of an undeserved Emmy. We still have many weeks to go, though, and I know that The Breakup times are yet to come.

There are many exciting things happening to make the eye-rolling days as short as possible. First, don’t forget about the chance of becoming a character in the book. If you already pre-ordered, send me your drag queen name. Every Friday I will randomly choose a name to join Bad Medicine’s cast of queens.

Also, we have great concept art coming our way. This is the first draft from Moises May.

Lastly, but super important, I have received messages from some very enthusiastic readers who want me to post more chapters. I hear you my pretties and I will. As soon as we hit 100 readers, the second chapter will go up. If there is anything I can say about the second chapter is that it is full of surprises.

That’s it for today. Tomorrow I’ll send a quick update with the winner’s name

                Have a great day

Thomas J. Arnold liked an update for The Darkest Places

Hello explorers, investigators, and general purveyors of the strange and the occult. Another update awaits you for The Darkest Places ~ When last we left off with the narrative, an evil ritual ended with blood, though not perhaps with the blood of the expected. A terrible evil has entered the world, and the question now turns to how, and why...

Chapter Two is now live, introducing to readers the characters of James Porter and Professor Richard Forsythe, the presumptive heroes of this dark tale. I hope everyone enjoys, and remember, it’s never too late to throw your support behind The Darkest Places. While currently we may be down, this contest is barely even started.

                  Enjoy ~

The final hours are upon us, Space Crew.

Look at all the things we’ve done. Over 300 copies of this book are going to go out in due time, guaranteed. If any of you are miraculously waiting to order 450 more, I’ll take it, but I’m really happy with our progress.

When I have some time to sort out all the thoughts and feelings in my brainspace I’ll send out another update, but for now I just want to say thanks, and welcome to the Crew for anyone’s who’s joined us on this final push. Let’s all spam our networks one more time and then rest easy knowing this space book has become reality.

Reusing an old doodle because I don’t have my tablet to draw with at the moment and I’m feeling sentimental.
