And I’m in the midst of all this, hood of my leather jacket up to keep my curly hair dry. I’m wearing sunglasses despite the dark clouds looming overhead.

      Right from the start I have an image of the character, standing apart, different. It’s that instant ’grab,’ that makes me want to read further. Far too many writers try to get very flowery and overly descriptive in their first paragraph. The author strikes a perfect balance here.
