Ryan Cook created a forum thread: Any Writers of Color?
I am a white male author and I’m painfully aware of the prevalence of published authors that look like me and have had similar life experiences as me. I have made a conscious effort to seek out writers of color (especially women) and read their works. I have read Toni Morrison, Jacqueline Woodson, Nalo Hopkinson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Nnedi Okorafor, Saladin Ahmed, and Sabaa Tahir just in the last two years. I feel it has helped me grow as a writer and as a person, and I want more.

So, fellow Inkshares writers, who out there is a person of color, or who out there knows an Inkshares writer who is a person of color? I would love to check out your work!

I love the introduction to plot and characters, but I feel like the narrative voice could stand a little more rhythm. This, for example, has two too many "and"s.

"She was rooted where she stood. The figure laughed. The wolf growled. Amelia screamed."

Several beats, all very important. I like using the Speech option on my word processor and listening to the computer read back what I wrote. Not only does it help me guide the rhythm, but it points out the spelling and grammar mistakes I my have missed.

I have a friend who, after a breakup, got her long hair chopped off. She realized how cliched this was, but explained it thusly: "I needed a change. A change that I was in control of." She loved her long hair, but it did her more good to lose it than to keep it.

Not sure if that’s a helpful story, but when I read "appropriate post-breakup reaction" I wanted to replace "appropriate" with "natural".

She reached up and tousled her copper curls, again contemplating if she should cut them all off—not because she didn’t like them, but because every Rom Com in existence told her it was an appropriate post-breakup reaction.
