I’m an Asian immigrant (Chinese heritage, born in Singapore, currently living in Canada) but my current book has a lily-white cast--it’s set at a gentlemen’s club in 1924 England. So I don’t know how much I can count, really.

Marcell, welcome aboard. I was reading your excerpt and it proving to be quite interesting. Maybe some  veterans here can explain this better than I but it works by asking others to fund your book. Usually start out with family and friends and you can also ask others on this forum to help fund your project. If you reach 250 orders before your deadline then you go on to publication which is called Quill. I wish you well in the fund raising.  By the way, college campuses and book conventions are great places to sell pre-orders of your books.

Hey guys. Another writer of color here. I’m an African American male. Just trying to make sense of this whole inkshares/writing thing. I’m currently trying to push my first book, Blueberries  (title subject to change), through funding. I’m open to any help, suggestions, or general conversation.

No, it is not unfortunate, it’s a sad shame something like We Need Diverse Books or Miss Representation is even needed in such a late date in time. When I taught history classes I used to encourage my students to look at the cultures of others and you would be surprised at how interesting that can be, but most people can not and will not move outside their comfort zone but do not realize how many exciting things they are missing out on.

@Ricardo Henriquez It’s unfortunate that I have to search for diversity in the media I consume, but the necessity is too imperative to ignore. Do you follow We Need Diverse Books or Miss Representation? They are great resources for lesser known writers and media creators of color.

I try to include adequate diversity in my writing (with proper research and respect) because even a fantasy world should represent the readers, no matter what their color, gender, age, sexuality, ability may be.

Hi @Ryan Cook  nice to hear you are interested in checking out the work of authors of color. I’m Ricardo, born in Chile and also lead of the Write Out Loud syndicate. I’m glad to meet another person interested in promoting diversity.

Hey @Ryan Cook ! I’m half-Japanese and half-African American, born in the US :) I’d love it if you could check my work out! It’s titled Are You Sure You Want to Quit? and is currently in production.

I am a white male author and I’m painfully aware of the prevalence of published authors that look like me and have had similar life experiences as me. I have made a conscious effort to seek out writers of color (especially women) and read their works. I have read Toni Morrison, Jacqueline Woodson, Nalo Hopkinson, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Nnedi Okorafor, Saladin Ahmed, and Sabaa Tahir just in the last two years. I feel it has helped me grow as a writer and as a person, and I want more.

So, fellow Inkshares writers, who out there is a person of color, or who out there knows an Inkshares writer who is a person of color? I would love to check out your work!
