Matthew Isaac Sobin liked a review for The Last Machine in the Solar System
What a cool premise. Here we are inside the head of a machine that thinks. Is this too far from our future? My guess would be no. Matthew Isaac Sobin delves into some intriguing premises about the future that also have relevance in today’s world. For instance, he talks of the hive mentality, and how it helps the survival of bees, as bees work together for the common good — it’s not about each individual bee’s survival. Think of all of today’s problems, where if humankind would come together to solve problems, how much better the world might be. Such keenly astute writing is rare. The Last Machine In The Solar System has me hooked. I’m intrigued to find out how it’s all going to turn out.

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Blood Dawn

    Dear readers,

Today I want to tell you about a very special new book that’s funding here on Inkshares: my husband’s space opera novel, Infinity Mind -- a novel about a telepathic assassin on a future Mars colony who must break his conditioning before he murders his wife.

Here’s a video we did together to introduce his book and how you can help him reach his funding goal. (And also at long last: the secret of the science fiction book case in my office is revealed!)

Click the picture to be taken to Pat’s page where you can view the video (and pre-order a copy while you’re there):

Pat’s been watching me work hard on connecting to an audience for Blood Dawn here on Inkshares and he’s been lurking in the community for some time, but with the launch of the Nerdist space opera contest we both saw this as a great time for him to make his debut with Infinity Mind. That, and the fact that we both finished our manuscripts last December, so he’s now got his sights on publication.

It would mean so much to me if you could support him by pre-ordering a copy of his book. This book, originally called "Rebirth" when we met, was actually one thing that first brought us together. It was a stormy weekend in May back in 2011 (that weekend when the world was predicted to end) and we both trekked our way across Winnipeg to the Radisson hotel for the annual Keycon writing convention to learn about how to get our respective books published (at the time, I was writing a fantasy trilogy called "The Blood, The Sword, and the Shadow", my second novel). Neither of us found fame, but we found each other and soon we were critiquing each other’s work.

Eventually, we both shelved our work, deciding it wasn’t ripe yet, and we moved on to other things. But Pat always did intend to go back to his novel about Mars colony, its corrupt dictator and her power-hungry right-hand-man, and the mystery hiding far beneath the Martian soil -- and I was eager to find out more about where he was going with the big reveal at the end (no spoilers!). Finally,  last year, after seeing how beneficial the Author Accelerator program was for me, Pat decided to use it to rewrite "Rebirth". The result: Infinity Mind.

Again, the link to where you can view the video and pre-order a copy of his book: https://www.inkshares.com/books/infinity-mind

Thanks so much for all your support!

(And fans of Blood Dawn, boy have I got something cooking here for the final push -- reveal is coming sooooon!)

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Disintegration

I attended a writing group on Sunday. It was fun to connect with other authors. We were a congenial bunch, and supportive. I passed out a few cards for Disintegration. They were receptive to it, in the room, but short of holding their faces to burning coals, I’m not sure those cards are going to equal pre-orders! Alas. :P

In other news, I received some prints from JF Dubeau, and they’re really cool (see photo below, as well as my awesome avocado-colored place mats). I’m still amazed that I won a contest. Luck, be a lady!

JF is the author of The Life Engineered, which has been published by Inkshares and is available to order on Amazon (as well as here, of course). JF is cool, he’s nice and, most importantly, really talented. You should absolutely pick up a copy (mine shipped today!), and leave a review, once you’ve read it!

Shhh, guys, listen: I’m not supposed to be updating you on anything.

The fantastic and notably gorgeous Leah Westra, my promoter friend, is making me editing progress update graphs and posting them on my facebook page HERE (please like if you are inclined), and I’m writing a little log about my progress which I’ll be sharing soon... but other than that, I’m supposed to be mum.

        BUT!!!

There’s a new Nerdist contest running RIGHT NOW and it’s SPACE OPERA THEMED!!!

So, welcome to all my new followers; I love you each individually and as a group, and I wish you nothing but success. I wish I could just buy 750 copies of each of your books, but that wouldn’t be building an audience, would it???

I can help by recommending some of these books, though!

Rogue by Allison Darhun - A young fighter pilot is faced with a decision that will change not only her life, but the lives of billions.

What is this one about? "...obviously science fiction, a strong female character, an entirely new world that is still somewhat recognizable, a lil bit of romance (but one that definitely doesn’t take over the plot because no one wants that), a pretty snazzy escape attempt, rad friendships, and parallels to things happening today," according to the author.

A snazzy! Escape! Attempt! Rad friendships! Parallels! I die, I die, I die! GIVE ME THIS BOOK.

They Are the Last by Elayna Mae Darcy - All Piper wanted was to escape the tortures of Edgemont, but when her godmother returns to rescue her, she finds herself on an epic journey to master her Light and save the world she comes from, that she never knew existed.

It’s a YA space opera with a, shall we say, admirable title? We need more love for YA on Inkshares!

Infinity Mind by Patrick Jamison - Slave to an oppressive government on a Martian colony, Mason, a telepathic assassin, must break his conditioning before he murders his wife.

I’m a sucker for anything set on Mars, and I’m a sucker for rebels fighting oppressive governments, OKAY? I know what I’m about.

Consider ordering one of these books, my dear friends, and you might make an author’s dreams come true.

        NOW BACK TO WORK!

        :)

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Deus Hex Machina

Today I officially head into writing mode. I took a break from writing to compete to my fullest in the S&L contest, and when that didn’t pan out I sort of hit a writing slump. I talked with some writing friends over the weekend, had them look at the chapter I have posted for DHM, and received some excellent constructive criticism. Man, I forgot how much I miss writing workshops!

The result is that I have committed to a writing schedule, and spent the morning plotting out said schedule on my calendar. I should have the book finished by April.  It’s not quite a Nanowrimo schedule, but writing a scene a day for five days a week seems on paper pretty reasonable.

I have already promised to post chapter two for you fine folks, and I apologize that I didn’t get that finished in a timely fashion and posted. I will remedy that hopefully by the end of this week -- at least that is my hope.  I will probably also post Chapter 3 when I get to it, but this project isn’t going to lay all its cards on the table. We have to maintain our air of mystery, Isidore and I.

Deus Hex Machina is an experiment for me. Can I write in a different genre and have readers respond?  Can I translate what was originally a visual work to a purely written format? Can I really turn this noveling thing into a career? All these questions still rattle around in my brain. It will be interesting to see what happens as 2016 progresses and I write this thing. Hopefully only good will come of it.

            Shameless preorder request incoming:

Everyone I’ve shared DHM with has responded positively, and that is wonderful. Speaking of wonderful, I should be receiving my shipment of books to sign this week (UPS says they are currently in Colorado -- I hope they get some time to play in the snow), which means I will get the chance to send out my backer contest rewards to the nearly dozen or so winners I’ve had so far.  I am only 1 order away from the next raffle, which means I am also only 161 orders away from Quill.  If you have followed DHM and enjoy what you read here, please consider backing the book. I will continue to give away books all the way through 750, and might start upping the ante as I get closer to June. Right now though, 250 is the first goal.

Know someone who likes scifi? Share the book with them, encourage them to order, and encourage them to share as well.  Together we can do this.

Matthew Isaac Sobin liked an update for Transilience

              Hello!

Last night felt like the slow decline into what promised to be an unpleasant head cold. Today, I feel much better. Needless to say, I fully expected to be miserable when I awoke on this blustery morning!

Has anyone ever told you that "you had a case of the Mondays?"

I attribute my miraculous recovery to single malt whisky, of which I had a wee dram before going to bed. In this case, Caol Isla - a 12 year old Islay. Homer was right about alcohol...

You cannot imagine how honored I am to have been selected as the Thriller Night Syndicate’s book of the month. Thank you one and all in the syndicate for supporting Transilience.

I’m your book of the month, read the fine print later.

For the longest time, my friends and I clinged to the possibility of a second Lovage album. However, the confluence of such a collection of talent could never hope to be replicated. Lightning, as they say, does not strike in the same place twice. If you are unfamiliar with them, check out YouTube. The quote above is a line from Book of the Month.

Thriller Night’s support of Transilience has pushed the number of orders beyond the number 50. Which means, I owe some lucky supporter a sketch! For the syndicate, I will include everyone’s name in the group for a chance at the prize.

I am away next week for a well-deserved respite in a much warmer climate. However, I will draw a name at random this week and announce the winner. I must admit, I am excited about this...and slightly nervous because a sketch for a potential stranger is way outside my comfort zone.

Fifty-one orders also means Transilience is only 49 away from a chance for a supporter to win a commissioned painting. The winner picks the subject matter and I execute in a style reflective of my own particular....ummm....

              Idiom sir?

Yes, right. Idiom....although it feels like we are using it incorrectly. No matter!! On with the show!

So get the word out there! Tell your mom! Tell your dad! Tell your neighbors! And the person who takes your order at the drive-through. Tell your pets about it on the odd chance they save Timmy from a well and then he can go on to tell others about Transilience! Tell Facebook about it and all the other Internets out there!

              Cheers!
              Kev

All, thank you for the support. Things have been progressing well... however, I need to shift up a gear if I am to hit my goal.

To that end, I pledge to give £1 ($1.45) to Cancer Research for every pre-order for the remainder of February.

--- Regardless of whether I hit my funding goal or not ----

I’m excited about the sequel. The heroine, Gwenn, is currently at the top of a mountain in the alps. Later she is going to jump off. But I can’t focus on that because I am spending too much time asking my friends to check out my book.
