Mike Graves and his pals love burgers, banter, and comic books. They don’t have a care in the world until an evil warlord from another dimension threatens to tear those bonds of friendship apart. Now it’s up to Mike and his best pals to stop it.

Chapter One (1) is now on the air!  With this, Chapter One (2), and the Prologue all available, I have come to an inescapable conclusion:

I am a slow dang writer.

I’ve always known this, but have never been able to tell if that was a blessing, a curse, or just what is so I’d better deal with it.  I’d complain about ’real life being too distracting’ if I wasn’t having so much fun!  Sketching out future plays, reading the plots of potential future books made out of old novellas, writing a film short or two and trying to get them made (definitely one this year, maybe two) means I’m right in the swing of things for Farm Boy.  Keeping busy is keeping me busy, and I think that’s working out for the best.

With the nature of this project being a bit odd - a linear timeline with a non-linear protagonist - I’m finding myself double and triple thinking plot points as they come up, which is slowing me considerably.  Keeps it interesting though, and I hope you like it, too.  Or at least find it interesting enough to stare at.

Huge appreciation for the folks who have taken a chance on what might come out at the end and for the folks following along.  I’ll leave you with a story about James Joyce that’s always made me laugh:

A friend of Joyce’s visited him one day, only to find him collapsed over his typewriter.

"James," he cried.  "How goes Ulysses?"

"Awful," came the mournful reply.
"Come now, it can’t be that bad.  Why, how many words did you manage today?"
"Seven."
"Seven!" said the guest.  "That’s quite a good pace for you.  Celebrate!"
But Joyce just shook his head.
"You don’t understand," he moaned.  "In what ORDER?"

I actually love Ulysses, and would never compare myself to James Joyce; but some days you can really understand that last sentence, can’t you?

Hope you like the new addition; and if you do, don’t be afraid to tell your friends!

    Happy Tuesday, Space Crew!

First, to start things off properly, I need to give a space-sized congratulations to my friend JF Dubeau, who’s successfully funded his second book, A God in the Shed. 750 orders with a few days to spare. Congratulations!

Onto Cup news! I used to think we had a lot of time. Wasn’t it just yesterday I was saying there was a month to go? And now we only have half that.

I know a lot of you are followers who haven’t picked up a copy. But time is running out, and the best way you can show support is to place your orders before the funding period ends.

Those who have ordered, let me remind you what’s in store with your Recommendations. If you’re one of the top three Recruitment Officers you’ll be receiving this prize pack:

So join me in shamelessly spamming this book everywhere. I want my social feeds so filled with this book that I miss out on more interesting things and complain for a moment before remembering how grateful I should be.

      Dearest Annabel,

My love, I must accept the fact that I will never lay eyes on you again. It is a hard truth but it is truth. I will never hold you again. Never taste the sweet nectar that is your kiss. Never walk hand in hand with you in our beautiful spring gardens. Never hold you close in moments of outrageous passion. This realization, more than anything else, has brought me to despair. I need you to know my intentions were pure. If you believe nothing else my dear heart, believe that. My entire life has been dedicated to this project. This impossible dream. I hoped to make a better world for you. A better world for everyone.

But I totally screwed the pooch on this one darling. Like it’s really, really bad. It didn’t work at all. I really thought opening that dimensional portal would be a good idea. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine freaking monsters would come out. So many monsters. Holy crap.

I can hear them gnawing through the blast doors now. Soon they’ll have me and my life will end in swift and undignified agony. I shall wait for you my dear. Across the river of death in the valley of eternity. I will wait until I can hold you again. If you’ll have me. I fear my wait will be a short one because Ted’s dumb ass left the teleporter turned on. For all I know these foul beasts have already stumbled into it and teleported home. In which case you may already be dead.

      In which case… my bad.

      Yours forever, Archie

We are 26% funded! That means another chapter has been uploaded.

Chapter 5 takes us to the evening in which Diggory made Helen’s acquaintance. However, her father isn’t too keen with his precious daughter talking to one of the poor boys from the tent-camp. Who knows the depths to which a jealous, narcissistic father will go to keep his little girl from a cocky little peasant boy?

I don’t usually do two updates in one day but...

              WE FUNDED!

So let me make something clear: I use the term ’we’ when talking about this campaign because while I write the book, it’s your support and encouragement that makes it happen. These aren’t empty words meant to artificially include you and make you feel like part of the process. The whole point of Inkshares is that this is a community effort. A symbiotic endeavour between reader and writer to help create works of fiction and bring them to the public.

There are a lot of people who have gone above and beyond for this to happen and I’d like to highlight at least three that can benefit immediately from your support:

John Robin, the author of Blood Dawn, spearheaded community efforts to rally people together after I called for help from fellow authors. John is a hard working writer and a helluva guy. Check out Blood Dawn and support it.

Andre Brun, my CEGEP buddy and author of Lies & Deception campaigned for me harder than I could campaign for myself. He leveraged his own book and his salesmanship skills to gather a ton of pre-orders and get A God in the Shed in front of many new pairs of eyes. Lies & Deception is a terrifyingly ambitious book that deserves your attention. Check it out.

Paul Inman, my cohost on WriteBrain and author of Ageless also lent a hand and was a big part of the community, leveraging the release of his own book to help get visibility for A God in the Shed. Check out Ageless, I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Finally, let me plug my buddy Brian Guthrie who was a great help and is currently participating in the Geek & Sundry Hard SciFi contest on Inkshares. Check out his book After Man and support it with all your heart (and pre-orders).

More soon as thing develop and, as promised:

The update in which I ask you to buy other people’s stuff...

Hi everyone!  No shameless self-promotion this update.  Instead, I want to point out to you a few projects that I would like you to take a look at.

First and foremost, JF Dubeau’s second novel on Inkshares, A God in the Shed, is nearing the end of its campaign.  He has 4 days left to sell 14 copies.  I read his first novel, The Life Engineered, and gave it a rousing 5 stars.  This guy can write.  If you’ve got some extra scratch laying around, please toss it his way to get this book published.  You won’t regret it.

Second, Amanda Orneck, who I still owe at least one firstborn (if not two), for helping me with my interim cover during the Nerdist Contest, has a novel funding as well, called Deus Hex Machina.    It’s a Shadowrun-esque world, and the first bits I’ve read are great.  I’ve also read her first novel, Shadow of the Owl, which I really enjoyed (as has everyone I know who has read it...the ebook is only 99 cents at amazon - check it out).  DHM’s got a bit more left in her funding period, but she still needs people to commit to her project.  Take a look.

Lastly, something that came across my Twitter feed is a Kickstarter unrelated to Inkshares.  You may remember my championing Sadie McGrady back in the fall - empowering little girl-people is pretty important.  Kazoo Magazine is in its last week or so of funding, and still needs a whole herd of people to get on board.  It’s targeted at girls ages 5-10, so if you’ve got one or more of those in your life, take a look.

Thanks for reading.  I promise to self-promote much more in my next update!

                  Cheers
                  Dave
