    Happy New Year!

I hope this update finds you all well and relaxed after the holidays. Now the competition / campaign has finished, I’ll be sending out reader updates for Human Resources less frequently. The competition was intense, but the publication process should be a more measured journey. I’ll aim to update you all roughly every month. If you would like to chat, or get some questions answered, I’m happy for you to reach out. You can get hold of me on Inkshares, on Facebook, or Twitter.

Before Inkshares can commence the publication process, there is some remaining work I need to do to tidy up the manuscript. To make sure I don’t hold this process up, I’ve taken the leap and will be writing full-time through January. I’m one week into this and it has been amazing — something I never thought I’d be able to do, and wouldn’t if it wasn’t for the support I’ve received from my wife.

I’ve included a simple table below to give you an idea on progress. The first draft of the manuscript has been completed and I’m now working on a rewrite to produce the second draft (which is what I will submit to Inkshares). As you can see, I’m a long way through the second draft, and expect to have it ready for Inkshares by the end of the month.

Once the manuscript is handed in, it will take about twelve months for the book to hit shelves. This includes approximately five months of editing, followed by the actual manufacture, distribution, and marketing efforts.

Thank you all for your support. For now, I’m going to get back to finishing the manuscript :)

    Cheers,

    Robert

Erin S. Evan liked an update for These are my Friends on Politics

      One last quick thank you

It was exactly one year ago today (at about this time) when I opened up These Are My Friends on Politics for funding. I immediately regretted that decision, and would momentarily regret it from time to time in the months to follow, but if you’re reading this, you’re responsible not only for taking that regret away, but also for scenes like these...

(Curious Iguana in Frederick, Md., sharing a table with the likes of The Underground Railroad)

(The Skokie, Ill., Barnes and Noble, which also happens to be the place I bought my first copies of The Writer’s Market and The Artist’s & Graphic Designer’s Market many many years ago)

...so thank you for that, and if I can return the favor in 2017, message me and let me know how, because I gladly will.

If you want to get a glimpse of what I’m up to next, read on. But if this is your stop, I just wanted to say thank you again.

      One last quick favor

If you enjoyed the book and/or it helped spare you from a family blowout over the holidays, a review on Amazon is most appreciated (and a bigger deal than I would ever have assumed it was until I experienced the Amazon bookselling experience from the other side).

Here’s a link to take you straight there (and you need not have purchased the book from Amazon to leave a review there): http://amzn.to/2ivmSIC#customerReviews

One last quick update (until the next one) on what’s next

Books: I’m currently drafting this note in my de facto writing app (Ulysses, if you’re curious), and when I look at the notes library in the sidebar, I see large pieces of four new books staring back at me. Two represent a completely different direction, one is a similar approach to a new topic, and one is a book that will follow up on this one without being a retread no one needs. Publishing plans haven’t been finalized on any of them yet, but I don’t envision funding them similarly to how I funded this first one. Nevertheless, I’ll use this channel to announce them when ready. (If you aren’t interested in any of that, there’s an "unfollow" link at the bottom of this email, and I take no offense if this is your stop and you click it.)

Art: I’d started getting into selling art and showing in galleries before I decided to momentarily upend that by publishing a book, but those plans will resume at some point soon. If you attend a show or festival in the Chicago area this summer, maybe you’ll run into me. But if not, I’ll be maintaining on online gallery here and here. (If you see anything you love, you’re privy to a friend discount on the Etsy side using the altogether fitting coupon code THISISMYFRIEND.)

One last batch of Nina photos for no reason

Enjoy, happy 2017, and thank you again.

Erin S. Evan liked an update for LandFall

So the List ends tomorrow. I had hoped to have 2 chapters up by then, but I hadn’t counted on:

        • Underestimating how much free time I’d have over Christmas
        • having a 4 day (and counting) heatwave that would just zap all energy and motivation
        • being as sad as I have been (RIP Carrie...and Debbie...and...damn it 2016...)
        • forgetting how long I can take to write things sometimes....

Y’know...best laid plans and all that, but it’s not all bad news!

        • I wrote just over 4,000 words in the last week and a bit, which is...a lot for me lately.
        • The rest of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 (it’s called: ’The Witness") are still coming shortly.
        • I’m still up for judging (as unlikely as a win there may seem)
        • and LandFall has had its first preorders! The first on the long road to publication.

Things will likely quiet down for a bit after New Years, though I’ll be sure to do an update once the results of the List are known, and I’ll do my best to update the page regularly.

Keep an eye on that horizon.

        and onwards to 2017...

Erin S. Evan liked an update for Murder at the Veterans’ Club

          Dear friends and followers,

Happy new year! By now, you should all have gotten the news that we’ve made our goal, a month early. Or, more precisely, that we’ve made the top three on The List, which means the same result without having to actually hit the full 750 orders. This is pretty awesome, and it’s all thanks to you. Every one of you who pre-ordered, who spread the word, who got your friends to pre-order or even just to look at the book: thank you. Thank you so much.

So, now that we’re "in production", what does that mean? When will you get your books?

I know I’ve been saying that books will probably be out around November 2017, and that was a conservative estimate back in March when I started. But the volume of books going through Inkshares of late means that the production process is longer now than it used to be. Here is what Inkshares has to say about the production process. According to this, it could be twelve to eighteen months from the moment I submit my manuscript before the book comes out. In short: between January and June 2018.

I know. I’m a little dismayed too. But it’s still miles better than not getting it out at all, so it’s still a cause for celebration.

Again, thank you for everything. Let’s party like it’s 1925!

Erin S. Evan liked an update for Sorcery for Beginners

            Friends, Readers, and Sorcerers All,

WE’RE NUMBER THREE! After nearly three months of crowd-funding, pre-orders, and silly GIFs, SORCERY FOR BEGINNERS is within striking distance of FULL MARKETING & PUBLISHING SUPPORT from Inkshares!

            https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=images&cd=&ved=0ahUKEwimrKjp55zRAhVMw4MKHWAoBY8QjRwIBw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fgiphy.com%2Fgifs%2F7-days-nmI6E4Ci1uhqg&bvm=bv.142059868,d.amc&psig=AFQjCNHG7mYN1UCG-CWEgBdqE3lw3nXAeg&ust=1483217345378023

(Sorry, I couldn’t resist one more silly GIF.) We had a lot of great things happen at Inkshares during this campaign — we hit guaranteed e-publication at 250 pre-orders, we finished 8th in the Geek and Sundry contest, we were picked for Gary Whitta’s syndicate, and we were chosen out of thousands of projects for The List.

But finishing at #3 on The List will really take us to the next level. Not only will Inkshares be involved with every aspect of production, including editing, cover design, and layout, but they will also put a full marketing team behind the book. SORCERY FOR BEGINNERS will be available at bookstores and conventions. It will be reviewed by major publications, both web and print-based. It will have its very own ISBN. It will be, in every respect, A REAL BOOK.

But first, there’s ONE MORE DAY of crowd-funding. You will still be able to pre-order the book, or buy it in stores next fall, but the funding incentives will disapparate like so many Hogwarts sixth years.

Only people who purchase within the next 24 hours will get a signed copy, the Codex Arcanum bookmark, and their name in the novel’s acknowledgments. But just to sweeten the deal …

Once funding closes, I will name ONE CHARACTER in SORCERY FOR BEGINNERS after a randomly-selected pre-orderer! (Or I’ll give the character a name of your choosing. (Within reason.)) That means if you haven’t ordered yet, you have 24 hours to take part. Only one of you will live on in literary infamy, but as my dad always says, “You can’t win if you don’t play.”

Thanks again for all your support. One day more!
