Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for The Madness of Mr. Butler

Thank you for your patience, everyone. This is a big update, but an important one!

A FULL DRAFT IS FINISHED!!!

Here’s what the timeline has been like:

Throughout the summer, Inkshares has guided me through a developmental edit of the manuscript, guided by my editor, Matt Harry. I’ve been working with a group of other amazing authors as we’ve all helped each other improve the structure of our stories. What I ended up with at the end of this process was a detailed outline of my story, as I decided to rewrite it for the most part.

In mid-September, I got the green light from Matt to go ahead and write the book all over again.

From September through the end of October, I expanded upon the outline I worked on with Matt, writing character sheets involving their personalities and background, as well as fun little things that won’t ever turn up in the story other than being guiding factors in the characters’ actions and decisions. I also wrote in details of the different settings, and I expanded the outline of the story itself into individual scenes. Basically, I was getting to know the world of the story I built. Part of fleshing that out was writing the prologue, which is still up on the book’s Inkshares page.

Approaching November, I made a big decision based on what I learned about my own story. I changed the entire perspective of how it is told. I was writing in third person, as an omniscient narrator, but I felt this was not personal enough. The writing was dry, the humor fell flat, and the characters just felt detached. I was slowing down and feeling a bit uninspired. Then, I decided to experiment with first person, and I wrote a few passages from the perspective of George, the main character in the story. Suddenly, the story felt warm, personal, and it had depth. I was excited for my tale once more!

This was great timing, as November is National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for short). For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo is a free challenge to write a story of 50,000 words within the span of November. I participated, and I sacrificed a lot of sleep, and I completed the task! I FINISHED MY DRAFT! THE NOVEL IS FINISHED!!! And, I kicked NaNoWriMo’s ass by writing 86,298 words in a single month!

So...what now?

After the initial wave of emotion crashed over me as I typed the last words on the epilogue, I was finally able to talk without choking up. One of the first things I said to my wife was "I have birthed the child, now it’s time to raise it." And that’s actually a great little analogy. The book is here. It is born. It is readable and the story all makes sense. But I need to edit it, nurture it, make it great enough to release. I need to feed it and wipe its butt every time I look into its diaper and find a poop. It needs to be in a condition where, if you don’t like it, then it’s because of completely subjective things, not objective problems such as incoherence, plot holes, characters that don’t really make sense, or, God forbid, typos (gasp!).

So, it’s on to the edits. Right now that means I’m going to be combing through the manuscript myself, but I’m getting by with a little help from my friends. Namely, my wife, and the incredible Peter Ryan (you need to check out his book, for real). I’m hunting down a few others, but if you are reading this and feel excited to give what I have a read in exchange for constructive criticism, don’t be afraid to reach out to me.

I feel that I’ll be able to turn in the latest and greatest draft of this thing to Inkshares by January. I’ll let you know when I get it in. After that, I’ll be able to give you updates on the finishing of the developmental edit, the copyedit, and the proofread. When that happens, we’ll also be getting into fun stuff like cover design and planning book signings and release parties and any other tricks I might have up my sleeve. The release date is estimated to be in September at this point, and I will do my absolute best to make that happen.

I am proud of this story as it is now. It’s fun, it’s funny, but it’s also just a good story. I laughed and cried as I wrote it, though that might just be my crazy showing. I hope when this thing gets into your hands next year, you laugh and enjoy the story. But it’s okay if you cry, too.

Thank you for your support, as always. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

I love you all. For reals.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and Happy New Year!

2018 is going to be amazing.

Love always,

-Michael.

     Greetings Readers,

I have just submitted the final manuscript for the eBook on Amazon. Unfortunately, that means I am going to have to delete this page here on Inkshares.com.

If you are interested in reading this book I recommend that you follow the link below!

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for Skavenger’s Hunt

Well...here we are: already speeding through November with what once seemed like a distant publishing release date for Skavenger’s Hunt now here.

First of all, to those of you who ordered paperback copies of my first-ever novel, thank you! The shipment emails should have landed in your inbox by now, with the actual “hold in your hands and turn the pages” edition of the book on its way. To say I’m excited (along with honored, and humbled, and a laundry list of other descriptions) would be an understatement.

Early Thursday morning of this week, I flew down from Portland to Inkshares in Oakland, where the production team had stacked almost a thousand copies of the Hunt on a table, awaiting my signature. It was a task I was thrilled to tackle, even if my pen-grasping fingers got a little wobbly a few hours in.

To our Grand Patrons of the book (those who received personalized inscriptions) please don’t hesitate to let me know if I got anything wrong. There’s certainly a chance, given the number of books signed, though I hope that’s not the case.

And one more thing. Every time I finished signing a book, I’d pause for a second to let the ink dry...but I think I was also pausing for another reason. It was to remember how lucky I was that someone, perhaps a close friend, perhaps someone I didn’t even know, had decided to buy my book.

      Thanks for that.

I truly hope you enjoy the story that’s tucked in-between Will Staehle’s amazing cover. If you do, I’d be so appreciative of a short, quick review on key sites such as Amazon and GoodReads. And if you’re planning on giving the book as a gift to a middle-grade or YA reader, please extend them a special word from me.

      Enjoy!

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for Africa Tusk

Hello Adventure Readers!  It has been a year since my adventure novel "Wings of the Pirate" hit the funding goal with Inkshares.  In that time, I wrote, had the manuscript edited, commissioned original cover artwork and had the cover designed for my newest novel "Africa Tusk".  Thank you all for following the project on Inkshares, but if I waited for them to get the project done, I would still be sittin’ on my hands ...  If you are interested in reading the completed book (at least check out the cover - a fantastic job done by a young man of 16 years!), check it out on www.Amazon.com at this link:

Good Luck to everyone with their writing and keep getting your stories out there!!

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for Wings of the Pirate

          Hello Adventure Readers,

Well, the updates on "Wings of the Pirate" have been few and far between as it seems Inkshares is bogged down with a backlog of titles.  I hear rumors that there are less than  a dozen books ahead of me in line yet (better than 40 ahead of me about this time last year!)  I will keep pushing Inkshares for a Publishing Date.  They have released quite a few books this year that are nicely put together.

Well, if you thought it would be another Christmas without a new novel from your favorite Adventure writer, here’s some news - If I happen to be in the top 10 of your favorite Adventure/Western writers, this is great news!

Over the past year, I have been working on a contemporary African adventure tale that touches on the crime of ivory poaching and the possible use of drones as an anti-poaching tool.  Get your safari garb on, grab a beverage and enjoy a good old fashioned adventure story - "Africa Tusk" is now available for purchase!

          Get your copy at:

I will keep on Inkshares and push them to get "Wings of the Pirate" in your reading hands soon.  Thank you all for your understanding and support!

          Sincerely,

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for The Love Fool

            Hello Readers!

We have a release date: MARCH 13, 2018

If you follow me on social media, you already knew this.

As you can imagine, this is absolutely exciting!

I’ve already got the first rounds of edits back from the copy editor and I’ll be hard at work on the notes. Wow guys! This is really happening and I cannot believe it. Round 1 has begun!

Keep up to date with the process by monitoring my social media or checking The Love Fool page here on Inkshares.

Oh! And for all you Goodread members out there, I just listed The Love Fool on the website.

            One super excited author,

            Lorenzo

p.s. The Inkshares team are pretty awesome to work with. I hope I didn’t annoy them yet....

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for APEX

              Dear Readers,

Sorry it’s been awhile since my last update! To be honest, I haven’t been able to write for the past week.  Up until that point, however, I was able to rework about 22,000 words, I interviewed eleven kind volunteers about their reading habits and engagement with social media, and I got my web designer (Mary Ann Aschenbrenner of WaterlinkWeb.com) started on my author page. So, progress is being made!

I expect my website, Instagram, Twitter, blog, and Facebook pages will all launch in a couple to three weeks. I also intend to compile my research on how to build an effective social media presence into an interesting and informative article so that other authors can use it to increase exposure for their creative work. Many, many thanks to my volunteers! I gathered so many valuable insights into effective marketing from you, both what works and what doesn’t. I’m now motivated to implement my ideas and see how it goes.

This week, I’m traveling for work, but my evenings are free, so I hope to get back into writing and prepare some content for my social media presence, write my research article, and finish up APEX. Next month is NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month for those unfamiliar), and I’d like to use it for launching a new piece of writing, but if I need to use it to finish up APEX, so be it. It’s all good.

Cheers and stay tuned! Big things are underway!

              Debbie

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for The Love Fool (A Rome-antic Comedy)

                Hello Readers,

I recently heard from Inkshares and it looks like a production schedule should be coming my way. This is great news! It means we are closer to getting the book in your hands. I am waiting for final confirmation on the release date and will announce as soon as I get it. The production and publishing process does have several steps so it will take some time. The manuscript has to go through a round of Inkshares edits that may or may not be needed. This process usually takes about a month or so. In addition, the document itself needs to be set up for printing, making sure all the text lines up correctly for each page. And, not to mention assigning an ISBN number to make the book available for retail. Plus, we have to finalize the book cover. There’s a lot more detailed items, but that’s the gist.

In the meantime, I wanted to share some other EXCITING NEWS: I have recently become a contributor to Intermezzo Magazine – a food and travel publication available by subscription, at bookstores, or newsstands across the country. My first contribution – a gorgeous photo of potatoes – can be seen in the current issue available now; and I’m working on something for the next/future issue.

Final note: The Love Fool website is moving along. I will update as soon as it’s ready to launch.

Things are bubbling, so that’s good news....  Ciao for now!  -LP

First off, let me start again by saying thank you!  I am utterly amazed by the amount of support I have received over the last couple of months.  It really means a lot to me, and from the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you and I appreciate you all!
Well, we’ve taken back third!  Amazing, right?  But we can’t stop here, not now... I still need your help.  Spread the word, tell your friends, family, horror nuts... non-horror nuts!  Hell, tell anyone who is interested in supporting the arts, or might be interested in helping some guy that wrote a campy horror novel out of his sheer love of the genre.  Either way, I need help getting the word out there!  We only have 9 days left!
That’s right, 9 days... What a hell of a ride this has been!
Regardless of how this turns out, I want all to know I could never have done this without you.
                  Thank you,
                  P.J. Marshman

Good evening, my wonderful and faithful Readers,

As many of you have noticed, you’ve started receiving emails saying that your payments for Lucky are being refunded. Please, do not panic! This is all part of a plan, I promise.

Recently, it has become apparent to me that Lucky’s best chance for success is along a self-publishing path. She is already scheduled to go to a copy-editor in December and to be formatted and released early in 2018. I will of course keep you all informed as we progress.

Now is when I need your support and patience more than ever. I still believe wholeheartedly in Lucky and I want you to believe as well. Please stay in touch and let me know your thoughts as we go through the next few months. I am all over social media (can’t miss me!) as well as have a new email set up specifically for handling Lucky-related everything. So please, reach out! I want to hear from you!
