Happy Monday, dear readers!

We are sitting at 38 copies sold, which is amazing, and we’re (as best as I can figure) right in 25th place in the Geek & Sundry contest. This is great - but we can do better! Spread the word about Fae Child, and email a friend you know likes books, or share it on Facebook. Every little bit helps. If you’re following the project and haven’t ordered your own copy, it would mean the world to me if you did.

The meat of this update is an exclusive scene where Dan, Abbie’s father, is meeting with the mysterious Cat. He called her at the end of Chapter 3, and gets a face to face with her later on in the book.

*****

The Cat sat sideways in her chair as Dan approached, legs crossed and toes artfully pointed. A pair of lime green heels lay haphazardly on the wood floor where they’d fallen. “I have to say, I did not expect to hear from you.” Her voice was a throaty purr, and she tossed her long purple hair over her shoulder as she sat up.

“You know why I’m here.” He stood firm a few feet away from her chair. One could better describe the piece of furniture the Cat reclined upon as a ‘throne,’ but he didn’t want to give her the satisfaction.

“Indeed I do. My secretary is quite good,” the Cat said, amber eyes focusing on him. The pupils were vertical slits, and she smiled suddenly. “You should see your face, Wodan. Imagine, you, so worried about a mere child. I never thought I’d see the day that you cared about something more than yourself. Or that there existed something the Hunter could not find.”

She lifted a manicured hand, and a file folder floated off of a side table toward her. Plucking it from the air, the Cat flipped it open. “And a wife as well.” The female made a noise in her throat that Dan realized belatedly was a chuckle. “To risk your exile by exposing,” that rancid laugh again, “yourself like this - your time here in the world has changed you more than I thought possible.”

“I’m not here to talk about me.” Dan crossed his arms across his broad chest, his legs a pace apart for balance. “I want to know what you’ve heard about my daughter.”

“No need to be rude,” the Cat said sharply. “You are the one here for a favor. It costs you nothing to indulge me, and yet you want to push past all the fun.

He raised an eyebrow. “Felines tend to play with their food. Forgive me if I refuse to be toyed with.”

“Wonderful creatures, aren’t they,” the Cat mused, ignoring the latter part of his comment.

“A little smaller than a dragon,” he said, staring at her, and she laughed.

“One makes their allowances to live among the humans. You have hidden your ears, and apparently your spine, while I…” the Cat gestured down at her slim, feminine body. “Your girl is not the first who’s found themselves in the Otherworld, and she won’t be the last. I don’t do housecalls anymore, though, if you want her out, you’re going to have to get her yourself.”

He clung to hope. “So she’s alive?”

The Cat smiled, an ugly expression on her beautiful face. “I have my people looking into it. With Gate travel outlawed, you understand it takes more than a wish on a star to discover what it is you want to know.”

Hope you enjoyed this sneak peek! Until next time!

Hello readers and faithful followers! Things have been a little quiet here on my page, but I’m still here, still writing, still reading and discovering the work of other talented authors here on Inkshares. (If you would like for me to read your chapters and give you some inline comments/critiques, drop me a line. I’m more than happy to do it!)

School started this week, and as I homeschool my two older kids that means a bit of a schedule adjustment. I’m trying to find the quiet edges to my day where I can sit at the computer and give Fae Child the attention it deserves. It’s a work in progress.

I have great news that I’ll get to share officially in the middle of the month, but if you’re curious, check out the Rite of Passage Syndicate’s page. It’s a syndicate dedicated to supporting "Unpublished and Unknown Authors on Inkshares. Our ultimate goal is to lend our voice to underappreciated and unknown projects that have yet to receive exposure." And, if that interests you, I welcome you to join! There are only 8 members so far, but with more we could make a real difference to some of the new authors on Inkshares.

I am also going to Rose City Comic Con this Saturday - I will be wearing an eyecatching dress and handing out Fae Child bookmarks! IN THEORY, anyway, the bookmarks haven’t been delivered yet, and I was up until 3 am last night cutting out the fabric for the dress. Sewing is tonight after work! (This week has been a little... busy.)

ADDITIONALLY I have started a new blog, taking advantage of an old domain I’ve been sitting on for a few years. http://jainhollie.com I promise to update it at least twice...this year. Well, we’ll see what happens. You can also follow me on Twitter @hanejolly

Have a great week/weekend!

Hello dear friends,

You’ve taken the time to click "follow" or even "order" on my page, and there are many more of you than I hoped for when I started this campaign on what was essentially a dare. Still, from the nearly 70 of you (I’ve been desperately trying not to make a joke here, deleted several that were VERY amusing), Fae Child has just 23 readers/25 orders (thanks Mom and Dad!).

Please look over my chapter samples - if a kid wandering around fairyland isn’t really your thing, try Chapter 3, where we meet Dan, her father, and the changeling back in the world. Fae Child at it’s heart is a story about a girl trying to get home, and a father trying to get her home.

I played around with the Properties page, and it will let you add movies that are like your book - I of course went for Alice in Wonderland as the first pick, rather obvious, but then for the second one I ended up choosing Taken. Then I took them both down, because it looked ridiculous.

"Alice has... a very particular set of skills..." or "I will look for the white rabbit. I will find the white rabbit. And I will kill the white rabbit." Feel free to message me all sorts of Taken/Alice mashed up quotes, I hope it makes you laugh as much as it did me.

Fae Child has a facebook page here, I’d love it if you’d like it. I’ll be putting up some WIP quotes from bits of the book I’m working on, also highlighting some of the wonderful reviews it’s been getting.

Also, if you’re just following along and thinking there’s plenty of time to support the project later... there are only 63 days left! I’m not sure why I have so few when other books that started before me have about 90 days left, but here we are. An e-book is just $10, and the more we preorder now, the more momentum Fae Child will get. I don’t have to run faster than the bear (reach 250), I just need to run faster than whoever is in third place right now. We can do it, together!

Much love,

Jane-Holly

Hello readers/followers/people who got lost and aren’t sure how they got here,

Just wanted to update you on what is going on in the world of Fae Child, and in my world. I’m surrounded by a pile of clean laundry (which I’ve actually managed to fold), it’s going to be a scorcher today and I’ve got to go to work later. On a Saturday. But for now it’s quiet up here in my room, the internet is working and here we are.

We’ve got 22 orders!

I can’t really believe I’ve gotten that many, but the fact is in order to get close to the top ten of the Geek & Sundry contest Fae Child is going to need more. A lot more. I’ve messaged everyone in my social media circles but I just don’t have that big of a network. I need your help! Do you know someone who likes fantasy novels, or books in general, who might enjoy supporting a new author? Email them the link to this book! Here it is: http://inkshares.com/books/fae-child You can also hit the ’recommend’ links up at the top of the project page, this will attach a unique referral code and I’ll be able to track who’s referred who when more orders come in.

So far my top referrer is Kyle T. Cowan, who generously recommended my book to his followers. Check out his novel Sunshine is Forever - "A fiction novel for anyone who’s ever been depressed, or knows someone who suffers from depression. Sunshine is Forever is full of life lessons, but it is ultimately a story about a teenager learning to take responsibility for his mistakes." SiF (can I abbreviate it? I’m gonna do it!) is racking up the preorders, so read a bit of it and see what you’re missing.

Back to my book - I have been writing every day. Every successful writer will always say the secret is to WRITE ALL THE TIME. So I am. Once we reach 30 preorders I’ll drop another sample chapter on you from the first draft. I also have a new cover in the works, thanks to my friend Christin Gattuso, who is way more talented than I am.

Thank you again, sorry this rambled on so long. I feel like I’m doing this -

- just insert ’MY BOOK’ instead of ’me’. ;)

Waiting isn’t my strong suit, so while I said I would post up the next chapter at 20 preorders, I’ve gone ahead and posted already! In chapter four we return to the Otherworld to follow Abbie and Foster as they are being chased by wolves.

Please enjoy! https://www.inkshares.com/books/fae-child/book_segments/chapter-four-4d6a8f

Just wanted to write a quick note to say THANK YOU to all the new readers Fae Child gained yesterday. You’re all amazing, and I’m so excited to have you on board for this journey. When we reach 20 orders I’m going to be posting up chapter four - I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Please feel free to interact with the sample chapters, as well, either highlighting a passage you particularly like, or pointing out a typo. Both are equally helpful and will put Fae Child on Inkshares’ front page.

I have to run, but I’ll be in touch soon!

Hello Readers and Followers, thank you for your interest and support.

I am excited to show you more of the world/s of Fae Child, so here is a world building update about the Otherworld/Faerie to sate your curiosity (and perhaps keep the Wee Folk at bay).

THE WILD HUNT

Many, many years ago, our world was a playground for the elves and other faerie creatures, and the lines of myth and reality were blurred. Summer and Winter would combine twice yearly in the Wild Hunt, led by Wodan, an elven lord of Summer, and Gwynn, a Winter lord. This furious host would tear through our world as they chased a magical boar in celebration of their Queen’s renewal, often sweeping humans along for a night of terror and hedonism. If the man or woman were clever enough they might return home, but often they were not and became enslaved to the elves in Otherworld.

Some say where the Wild Hunt went, war would follow, others that the Fair Folk spread gifts and joy in their wake. What is true is that the world around the Hunt would ripen into the season - leaves turning orange and red along the path of the elven riders in Autumn, wildflowers sprouting overnight in riotous colors in the Spring.

In our world the elves cannot touch their magic, except in spring and autumn during the time of the Hunt. Some elves delighted in spreading joy, others in creating fear, and as Summer and Winter combined their forces the weather would become tumultuous and uncertain. After the Hunt they would return through their Gates into the Otherworld, the balance restored as the Queen of the dominant season would grow in power, the other fading.

GATES

I have mentioned gates quite a bit, as well as their capitalized versions: portals between this world and the Otherworld, or Faerie as we sometimes call it. Any fae creature of sufficient power, with training in the proper elemental magics, could open a gate and travel through to the human world. Since they could not use their magic once in this world, these portals would be left open and occasionally humans or animals from our world would slip through into Faerie.

Old magic was woven into the gate spell by the Queens when our world was discovered at the beginning of things; a combination of the elements of earth and fire, the purported purpose of which was to ensure that the humans who stumbled through (or were stolen away) were not missed by those they left behind. A changeling was formed from a reflection of the human, a shapeshifting creature of magic who took the place of the lost.

The elves were known to sometimes steal human babies to bring back to Otherworld, leaving a changeling child in it’s place. Perhaps they simply could not resist children of exceptional beauty and charm, raising them and keeping them as pets, or servants. Maybe the elves had more nefarious plans for the young ones they stole, or were the changelings themselves the end goal, with the kidnapped children as collateral damage? We’ll explore this more in my next update.

Thank you again for your interest in the world of Fae Child! Pre-order your copy, and if you have already please write a review or a recommendation (at the top of the main page). Also, please send the link to anyone you know who might be interested. While the book doesn’t have much momentum right now, I prefer to think of myself as a plucky underdog. I will keep writing as long as you keep reading.

Thanks again,

~Holly

Hello Readers and Followers!

I have a world building update in the pipeline for you, a little background on Faerie/Otherworld that I think you’ll find interesting. I have been camping all weekend with my family and couldn’t figure out how to send this "update is coming" update with my phone, but I should be posting it up in the next few days.

My book, Fae Child, has an eight year old as one of the main characters, but I am not planning on writing a kids book. I should say "I was not," because sometimes stories will change on me while I’m in the process of writing them, but as it stands it’s a book with a child in it which adults can enjoy. Hopefully this will become more apparent as the next few sample chapters get posted up over the next few weeks.

I appreciate each of you who have shown interest in my little book! Thank you!

Hello to my followers and readers! I hope you had a good weekend - mine was pretty busy. I’ve set up a facebook page for Fae Child to help push it’s exposure on social media, so if you would be so kind as to click HERE I would be very grateful! I am continuing to refine my outline and working on the first draft, I should have another sample chapter up soon.

Thanks again! I appreciate you all!
