Jane-Holly Meissner's latest update for Fae Child

Aug 16, 2016

Hello Readers and Followers, thank you for your interest and support.

I am excited to show you more of the world/s of Fae Child, so here is a world building update about the Otherworld/Faerie to sate your curiosity (and perhaps keep the Wee Folk at bay).

THE WILD HUNT

Many, many years ago, our world was a playground for the elves and other faerie creatures, and the lines of myth and reality were blurred. Summer and Winter would combine twice yearly in the Wild Hunt, led by Wodan, an elven lord of Summer, and Gwynn, a Winter lord. This furious host would tear through our world as they chased a magical boar in celebration of their Queen’s renewal, often sweeping humans along for a night of terror and hedonism. If the man or woman were clever enough they might return home, but often they were not and became enslaved to the elves in Otherworld.

Some say where the Wild Hunt went, war would follow, others that the Fair Folk spread gifts and joy in their wake. What is true is that the world around the Hunt would ripen into the season - leaves turning orange and red along the path of the elven riders in Autumn, wildflowers sprouting overnight in riotous colors in the Spring.

In our world the elves cannot touch their magic, except in spring and autumn during the time of the Hunt. Some elves delighted in spreading joy, others in creating fear, and as Summer and Winter combined their forces the weather would become tumultuous and uncertain. After the Hunt they would return through their Gates into the Otherworld, the balance restored as the Queen of the dominant season would grow in power, the other fading.

GATES

I have mentioned gates quite a bit, as well as their capitalized versions: portals between this world and the Otherworld, or Faerie as we sometimes call it. Any fae creature of sufficient power, with training in the proper elemental magics, could open a gate and travel through to the human world. Since they could not use their magic once in this world, these portals would be left open and occasionally humans or animals from our world would slip through into Faerie.

Old magic was woven into the gate spell by the Queens when our world was discovered at the beginning of things; a combination of the elements of earth and fire, the purported purpose of which was to ensure that the humans who stumbled through (or were stolen away) were not missed by those they left behind. A changeling was formed from a reflection of the human, a shapeshifting creature of magic who took the place of the lost.

The elves were known to sometimes steal human babies to bring back to Otherworld, leaving a changeling child in it’s place. Perhaps they simply could not resist children of exceptional beauty and charm, raising them and keeping them as pets, or servants. Maybe the elves had more nefarious plans for the young ones they stole, or were the changelings themselves the end goal, with the kidnapped children as collateral damage? We’ll explore this more in my next update.

Thank you again for your interest in the world of Fae Child! Pre-order your copy, and if you have already please write a review or a recommendation (at the top of the main page). Also, please send the link to anyone you know who might be interested. While the book doesn’t have much momentum right now, I prefer to think of myself as a plucky underdog. I will keep writing as long as you keep reading.

Thanks again,

~Holly
