Someone would write about it. Probably many someones. Those who knew, who were there from the beginning, would be the best to do it. But even they would not know firsthand how it unfolded in other places. So maybe it should have been a researcher or professional writer who could conduct interviews and consult resources based on many years of experience and a long list of valuable contacts. As long as they were objective and did not approach it with an agenda. How often do those come along though? And how could they really know how it started without having been there. And beginnings are important. Especially for this.
I was there from the beginning. But I knew nothing about writing. Nothing more than writing research reports and graduate papers in college for my chemistry degree. But I did know how it started. And where it’s gone, so far. And that’s worth a lot.
How could something that started so harmlessly have had such an impact? An impact that changed society. That changed the future. That changed the world.
It started around a board game at a home in suburbia. It started with a few drinks among a few guys with chemistry PhDs that worked together in a research lab at the American division of a European chemical conglomerate. It started with a question and a bet.
So, I decided it may as well be me who writes this. For those who will want to know how the world changed from what it was then to what it is now. And who wouldn’t want to know that.
Those who have yet to be born will have a hard time believing how things used to be.
