4. Emma

Thank God I came just in time to give him that remote control. Why is Mike always so angry? There was quite cool in the room even without the air conditioner. But okay. Having eaten a bag of crab chips, I went to the kitchen, to throw away the empty bag. It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed this taste. God, thank you that my parents luckily let me go to this party. It took me hours to make them allow me to spend some time with the guys. It’s alright, Emma, someday they stop terrorizing you!

Looking in the mirror in the kitchen I noticed that I should fix my hair a little and noted that blunt bob really suits my medium-length brown hair. It’s surprising my parents didn’t mind me changing a style a bit.

“So how is reading ‘Me before you’ going on?” asked David who was standing behind me.

“Oh, right now I’m reading the part where Lou and Will get closer to each other and go to different events together,” I finished fixing my hair. “I love the book a lot, thanks for recommending it to me!”

“In fact, Beth recommended that. She says that everyone finds something in this book that hits close to home.”

“She is right,” I nodded. “It happens that you fall in love with someone but deep down you understand that it won’t work with that person.”

I looked down and got lost in thought for a while.

“Hey,” David put his hand on my left shoulder, “you’re gonna be fine. I believe you’ll find a boyfriend. You’re beautiful, you’re kind, you’re amazing! All in good time, trust me.”

If he only knew that it’s not that simple. Alright, I don’t want to think about it.

“Thanks for your support, David,” I hugged my friend.

“Listen, don’t you wanna leave this terrible, noisy place and take a stroll in the garden?” he offered, taking a look at Kate, Veronica, Miguel and Chris dancing to loud Lady Gaga’s ‘Poker Face’.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a terrible place. Maybe it’s noisy, but not terrible. Look at the guys: they might be drinking, screaming, having fun, but they are so genuine, so happy. I think we should be happy for them.”

“So you’re not going?”

“Actually, a little bit of silence and fresh air wouldn’t hurt.”

We went out of the house and started descending the stairs when we spotted Sam who had just finished smoking.

“Sam, do you wanna take a walk with us in the garden?” I asked.

“No, thanks, guys. Just don’t get nasty out there,” he laughed.

What?! What is that supposed to mean?

“Very ‘funny’,” I objected, “FYI, David has a girlfriend! And you are familiar with my life principles.”

“Sorry,” he pursed his lips awkwardly, “it was just a bad joke.”

David and I didn’t say anything and moved on. It’s so strange of him. He usually turns down that kind of offers and goes about his business: he almost never jokes.
