One

The alarm blared extremely obnoxiously waking me up from my sleep. I groan in annoyance as I hear my cabin mates getting up and getting ready in a hurry. I roll off of my cot trying to get up but ended up falling onto the floor with a thud, and I groan once again as I hear my cabin mates rush out to get to the center hall. I mumble incoherent words as I stand on my feet as I walk to my trunk to get out my uniform. I slowly undress and slowly put on my uniform that consists of a gray t-shirt and navy blue slacks, but I hate wearing slacks so I just put on my wash out jeans. I then put on my dark brown boots before tying them, then I stand back up to walk out of the cabin. I run my hand through my messy dark brown hair as I push the door open, and walk outside to see people running around. I swear this better not be another practice run. I thought annoyed. I walk across the field to get over to the center hall avoiding everyone as I pass through, and as I’m walking up the steps I hear someone calling my name. I turn to only see Erick Donson calling me. I roll my eyes as I don’t want to deal with him, so I turn back to walk inside but he caught up with me before I could even open the door.

"Lewis! What’s up, grumpy man?" Erick asks smiling.

"What do you want?" I ask turning annoyed.

"You didn’t hear? The general is transferring people today." Erick says giving me a knowing look.

"What? You think he’s going to transfer me?" I ask still annoyed.

"Well, considering our job is to rescue people in need and all you do is fly out there ignoring their cries. I do think he will transfer you, and also you don’t even wear our full uniform." Erick tells me smirking.

I grit my teeth together as I punch him in the face before turning and walking inside the center hall. I fast walk towards the office as I notice people standing around talking or walking around quickly. I head straight to the General Malone’s office so I can give him a piece of my mind. Nobody transfers me. I’ll get the bottom of this and Erick better be wrong or I’m punching him again for lying. If he’s right, then I’m still punching him. I admit I’m not the best soldier but who fucking cares? Those people are getting in trouble almost every day and it’s just plain ridiculous. If they don’t want to get hurt or be put in the ground, then they shouldn’t be putting themselves in danger all the freaking time. I hate people so much, they annoy me. There’s his office, he better be alone or else I’ll be even more annoyed. I shove people aside as I push the doors open to General Malone’s office, and inside I see him sitting at his desk and another guy standing next to him. I barge in before slamming the doors close behind me.

"Mr. Decker, what do I owe this uh welcoming visit?" General Malone asks bitterly.

"Are you transferring me?" I ask straight to the point.

"Yes I am." He says simply.

"Why? I’ve been here longer than everyone else here! I shouldn’t be the one transferred! If you ask me, that idiot Erick Donson should be the one transferred!" I yelled angrily.

"Is that so? Mr. Donson saved at least fifty people in the last year. How many have you saved Mr. Decker?" General Malone asks me firmly.

"Does that really matter?" I ask annoyed.

"It does if you want to stay here and not be transferred. You see Mr. Decker this company is about saving people’s lives, and since you joined you haven’t saved one." General Malone firmly tells me.

"Yeah but-" I try to explain, "There’s no but Mr. Decker, this company needs people who will go out and save people’s lives. If you aren’t up for the task then you aren’t welcome here anymore. I tried to give you chances. I tried to give you time, but you obviously don’t care about this company." General Malone explains to me firmly.

"General Malone I-" I try to explain again, "No I don’t want to hear it. You are being transferred to a smaller company that is being run by General Anick, and I expect you to be on your best behavior. He’s more strict than I am." General Malone tells me.

"Anick? What kind of name is Anick?" I ask as I furrowed my eyebrows.

"I’m General Anick." The guy who’s been standing quietly spoke up suddenly.

"Oh." I say staring at him.

General Anick is a couple of inches taller than General Malone and he just looks more strict. He’s more darker-skinned, bald, and has the darkest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. I feel kind of intimidated standing by him, and without noticing I step back from him. General Malone isn’t serious, is he? He’s not going to transfer me to this guy, and to a smaller company at that? What is he thinking? He must be out of his mind, this must be a practical joke.

"General Malone this has to be a joke right?" I ask looking at him.

"I’m not your General anymore Mr. Decker and I don’t make jokes. Now get out of my sight!" He yells suddenly.

I jump as I turn and rush out of the doors making them slam behind me. I then regain my composure as I notice people staring at me. I glare at them as I walk past them all. Stupid people. Stupid Malone. I thought angrily. I’m only in this kind of business because of my ability. That’s the only reason why anyone gets there job in this blasted world. If you can fly, you go into the company to save people. Which is what I’m in. Yippie. If you have water powers, you get to be a firefighter or a lifeguard. Two choices for them, goodie for those people. If you have firepower, you’re a garbage disposer or a chef. If you have earth powers, then you’re a landscaper or a gardener. There are many powers and many jobs that you can be, but it only depends on your power. The power of flight, which what I have only has one job option and that’s saving people’s lives. I hate it. I never wanted to be in this kind of business but because of my power, I’m stuck in this kind of business. It’s a stupid rule, and whoever made up that rule is a fucking idiot.

I slam the doors open and storm outside to go pack up my stuff because of course, I’ll be the one to get transferred. I hear Erick yelling at me from a distance asking if he was right, and I stop and gave him a deadly glare. He smirks when he realizes he’s right about the fact that I’m getting transferred. I stomped towards him as he’s laughing with his friends, and as I’m right in front of him I punch him square in the face again. Erick falls on the ground groaning in pain as he’s holding his nose in pain. I’m pretty sure I broke his nose, but he bloody deserves it.

"What the hell man?" Paul asks angrily.

"Not cool man, not cool." Brad says helping Erick up.

"I don’t fucking care about you three or about this damn company!" I yell angrily.

They stared after me as I turned on my heel and continue my way back to my cabin. I push past everyone as I make my way to my cabin for the last time. When I got there I slam it open and stomp towards my trunk. I took out my duffle bag and pack all of my stuff that’s in my trunk, and stealing the blanket that’s on my cot. I then zipped my bag up before throwing it over my shoulder. I make my way back to the door and push it open again only to jump and drop my bag onto the floor. Anick is standing outside with his hands behind his back standing straight waiting for me. Creepy. I thought annoyed. This day is already the worse day of my life, and now I’m going to be stuck with this creep? Why do I have to be transferred? Why couldn’t they just transfer stupid Erick? Stupid prick.

"I hope you are ready because we are already late." Anick firmly says.

"Ready to transfer from one hell to another? Sure." I sarcastically say.

"Don’t be cute. In this company, it’s about saving people’s lives, and you’re in my company now. If you think you can get off as easy as General Malone as you’re dead wrong." Anick strictly tells me.

Cute? I wasn’t trying to be cute? This guy might be stricter than Malone, but he doesn’t understand sarcastic very well. I still don’t understand what kind of name Anick is, it’s a stupid name. It sounds like a foreign name. I guess it could be as I don’t know anything about him but that he’s strict and he owns a smaller company. I still hate this business and I still wish I was born with a different power.

"Let’s go Mr. Decker." Anick says as he turns and walks towards the exit.

"You know, since I’m such a terrible rescuer why don’t you just fire me now instead of dealing with me? It will be so much easier for both of us." I try to persuade him.

"Don’t think that you are getting out of this business that easy Mr. Decker. You are a flyer, and flyers are rescuers. That’s what you are born to be and will always be. You got to suck it up and just do your job." Anick explains to me firmly.

"I don’t want to be a flyer and I definitely don’t want to be a stupid rescuer." I simply say annoyed.

"We’re all born as flyers Mr. Decker, and so it’s our job to be rescuers. It’s just the way things are and you just got to stop denying who you are." Anick tells me.

"This is bullshit! Who came up with this stupid rule that flyers have to be rescuers or that earth has to be landscapers? It’s a stupid rule!" I yell angrily.

"The mayor." Anick simply says.

"Huh?" I ask confused.

"The mayor made the rule, and like the rest of us, you should follow that rule." Anick simply says.

"Stupid mayor." I muttered.

"I wouldn’t disrespect the mayor, Mr. Decker." Anick warns me.

"I’m not scared of him." I mumbled.

"Less chatting and more moving. We are late." Anick says changing the subject.

We pass the exit gate and that’s when we both took off in the sky to travel in the air the rest of the way. I hate being a rescuer, but a flyer isn’t that bad. I do like being able to travel by sky and not have to worry about other people. I just hate with the cost of being a flyer, you have to be a rescuer which is just plain stupid. How many times have I said that already today? I wonder. Eh who cares, but still, I wish this world was different. I wish I could be a flyer and be something that I want to be. Why is that so wrong? Why did the mayor make that stupid law? What’s the point in it anyway? There has to be a way where this law could be changed, and maybe there is. I should think about this more, and hopefully, I can find a way to change the law and make it where people can be whatever they want. It won’t even matter what powers you have, you can be whatever you want. I first have to break Anick and get him to fire me so I’ll have free range to do whatever I want. That’s going to be the tricky part. Anick is stricter and more intimidated so he will be harder to break. I’m up for the challenge though, because everyone already knows that I’m a terrible soldier.
