The Sunflower and the Moon
A sunflower rests, nestled in the cradle of a hillside. His singular stem, long and lean lifts from the ground and bright yellow petals stretch finger-like towards the Sun. He is alone. The wind rises and he sways dreamily back and forth. And he is alone. The rains come, time drifts, bitter cold winds bite his fragile countenance. Summers dawn hot and echoing and he is alone. He hangs his head a weeps, as sadly only a flower can. He is alone. Each day spent as a mirror to the next and a memory of the last, and each day he is alone.
Then the night falls and the vast canopy of stars illuminate the gloom and he lifts his face up to feel the warm glow and the stars begin to sing. A chorus of angelic voices carried by starlight, filling him with love and he knew they sang only for him. The stars swirl and pulse in time and through the celestial magic the Moon slowly rises. Her beautiful porcelain skin glowing and filling his small flower heart with joy and his eyes swell with her beauty. She was simply the most beautiful thing in creation. She looked down upon him with love and her voice joined the heavenly choir, and like a spark set his soul aflame. He reaches up, breathless, fighting gravity to touch her face. A single touch, a soft heartbeat, a simple longing to feel her skin under his tender caress.
So the days came and the days went, spent in anticipation of the dusk and the bliss of the nights fall. The Moon would smile down upon him and sing her songs of love. Only in these moments did he truly exist, only in these moments did he feel complete. The precious seconds which seemed to be over in a heartbeat and he would have to spend what felt like an eternity in the harsh light of day before he could see her again.
Time passed.
The shadows grew long and he felt himself begin to fail. One night he lay upon the grass and gazed up at her. “My love.” He said. “I know I am but a simple flower but I fear this night will be our last night. I want you to know that I had loved you with all my days. Every moment I have spent, every breath I have breathed was for you. But sadly I think now we must part and I will never again see a beauty such as yours”
He fought for as long as he could but soon his eyes began to close and he would see her no more. Faintly, from far away he could feel arms cradle him and the lightness of air as he rose from the ground. The stars had come down from the sky and tenderly, and with love, gathered his small body and carried him up towards the heavens, and towards the Moon.
“My sweet one” She said as she reached out and lovingly took him and held him close. “Did you ever think I would let us part? I have looked down upon you and loved you for so long that life without you is not life and Death will not come for you”
She tenderly kissed his forehead and the little sunflower opened his eyes.
“I am forever yours.” He said. “And you are mine.”
“You are mine.” She replied. “And I am forever yours.”
So the sunflower and the Moon were never parted and if you look carefully, when the stars are bright and the Moon is full you will see a sunflower blooming there. And if you listen carefully, you will hear him singing his song of love.
