“Detective, the body is over here.”
Of course, it was impossible to miss the body lying in the middle of the sidewalk. The rain had washed away almost all of the blood and debris, leaving only the body, soaking in the relentless downpour. The only sign the man had jumped from the roof of the nearby sixty story building were the small and subtle cracks in the pavement.
Special Agent Kiran Blake had passed a dozen men who would have matched the same description as the body on his way to the scene. Brown waterproof trenchcoat, rubber boots and gloves with thick, gray nylon pants. It was the current fashion among the city dwellers, as it kept you dry (well, as dry as possible) and was easy to remove when you went indoors.
The only thing of note about the man was his lack of a breather or face mask. It was rare to see someone outside without either, even if they were dead. Blake was well aware of this because he stopped wearing his years ago and had endured strange stares ever since. He preferred that people could see his face and he could see theirs, even if it meant he was always wet. As it was, the rain was streaming down his face as he looked over the scene.
“Yes, thank you.” the Detective replied to the patrolman guarding the scene. “But I’m not a detective, I am a Special Agent with the FBI.”
Blake hunched over, looking at everything except the body. The patrolman guarding the scene was a junior officer, wearing his visor and breather just like they train you for in the academy. The equipment is supposed to make it easier to deal with standing in the rain all day when out on patrol, or at least that is what they say.
“Sir, why is the FBI involved?” Asked the patrolman through his breather. His voice sounded robotic as it passed through the breather system.
“Because this man used to be a Senator.” Blake replied, looking over the cracks around the body. He stood and looked upwards towards the top of the skyscraper.
“Used to be, sir?” The patrolman asked.
“Yes, right up until he hit the pavement.”
