The Demon of Sambolia

Without you Diamond wouldn’t exist.
Foreword
This story is based off the few games I had played in the world Trina created for Dungeons & Dragons. She originally called this world Third Earth but I could smell a lawsuit coming from Rankin and Bass over the Thundercats. I have renamed this world Herta. Since she remade this world, she calls it something else that I forget.
The history they gave me when I joined the game was that the world was formed by the God and the Goddess simply called Hym and Hur. You had all the standard D&D races and classes, but had only two god choices.
I created a psionicist grey elf with silver hair and violet eyes for this campaign and raised her to sixth level to be on par with the other characters. I called her Diamond because I didn’t have a real name for her yet and came up with a back story saying her name was cursed. Trina decided the actual curse was; if she told anyone her name they would die a horrible death. We played out how she came to be called Diamond in game. I later decided on her real name. I don’t know if Trina realized what a horrible curse that is, but I played it well.
I hope you enjoy the story as much as we enjoyed playing it. From here, I have further plans for Diamond. The others, well, that’s another story. I’ll let you figure out what happens to them by the end of the story.
As always, enjoy,
John
Welcome To Freedonia
Syl’ima Hal’oisi walked through the forest away from her home, the grey elf kingdom of Cerrig Du. She walked south from the mountains of her home towards the free city of Freedonia. She walked around the the wood elf territories to not cause problems. She remembered the curse cast upon her as she left. The Goddess cursed her to never tell anyone her name. If she did the person she told would die a horrible death and their blood would be on her hands.
She hooded the violet cloak she wore, hiding her silver hair, which she smoothed back behind her pointed grey elf ears. Her violet eyes displayed the sorrow she felt. Her alabaster skin showed she was not accustomed to being out in the sunlight. She wore leather armor that was brown and white in color. She thanked the Goddess that the grey elves gave her the armor and enough provisions to make it to another city. On her left hip was a long sword. On her right was a hand crossbow. A small quiver was slung over her right shoulder. She did not feel it was justice to exile her.
"I was nervous," she muttered to herself. "It’s not my fault the king wanted a demonstration of my psionic power. I just want to levitate the throne, not blow it up." She was the first known psionicist on the world. Psychokinesis was her power. She could cast minor spells like all elves, but she had trained her whole life in mastering her psychic power. "The Goddess decided to punish me with a curse for this. Why am I exiled as well? Well, no one wants to be around someone who is cursed."
The woods opened up and she passed through the outlying farms towards Freedonia. No one gave her a second look. They were just busy with their farms and lives.
She approached the gates of the Kingdom of Freedonia. She saw the large grey stone walls. The bridge was down but guards were at the front of the gate. She could see the beautifully crafted castle at the center of the kingdom. She knew she was almost to a place to start over. The guards stopped her on the bridge over the moat. "Halt!" they commanded. "State your business with the kingdom, and show your papers."
She handed her papers to them, "I am here to begin a new life," she stated. She kept her head down. She noticed how much her boots had worn in the weeks she had walked here. Her pack was nearly empty of the rations the elves had given her. She had little money. Freedonia was said to welcome all, and give them a second chance if needed. It was why she walked here.
"Running from your past, eh, elf?" one of the guards asked. "The Empress and her son welcome you. May the silver sword of the God protect you while in this city and the love of the Goddess nurture you." They let her enter.

Zerik dashed around the city with ease. His feline features and pointed ears let people know his unusual heritage. He was half elf and half Raksasha. He had short fur and tiger like markings. His hair was brown and messy. His friendship with Stellis kept him from being arrested. He loved being a thief. He never stole more than he needed and preferred to help those in need. His unusual heritage gave him the unique camouflage ability. He wore black leather armor with brown highlights. His magic boots of Great Haste were black in color.
He happened to be by the North gates when he noticed a grey elf with violet eyes and a violet cloak enter the city. She looked so sad. Zerik wanted to cheer her up and be her friend. He decided to follow her. He saw her enter a tavern and ask if she could set up a small card reader stand to make money to pay for food. He smiled.
Zerik knew they needed someone with magic in their group. Stellis was a paladin and could heal them, Finn was a fighter, and Zerik was the teams thief. If she was able to do magic then they would be an almost unstoppable group. He ran to find Stellis.
Stellis walked out of the temple of the God. The symbol of the silver sword emblazoned on his impeccably kept silver armor. His long red hair was tied back. His sword was strapped to his left hip. He wore a white cloak with silver trim. He smiled as he saw his friend Zerik running up to him. He was going to meet their companion Finn, the Prince of Sambolia.
"Stellis!" Zerik cried out. "I’ve found a new member for our group!"
"Friend Zerik, this is good news," Stellis replied. "I thought we were good without a wizard or sorcerer."
"We are good," Zerik agreed, "but we’d be great with one."
"Let us get Finn and then we shall meet this person," Stellis stated. "Where do we find this person?"
"She is an elf, and she is in the Laughing Owlbear tavern. I’ll make sure she doesn’t leave. You and Finn meet us there," Zerik said as he ran back.
"She?" Stellis questioned without being heard by Zerik as he was long gone. He went on his way through the winding streets to meet Finn at the Sambolian Embassy.
Finn sharpened his scimitar that he called “Skimmiter”. He was waiting for Stellis and Zerik to find a new adventure to go on before heading back to his island. The nation of Sambolia. His dark skin and long dreadlocks made it obvious. His armor and style did not seem to reflect Freedonia. He had on chainmail underneath a finely lacquered wooden breast plate. His feet were wrapped in green leather boots. His trousers also had lacquered wooden plates on them. They were all Sambolia. He loved his nation, but, he had too much fun here with Stellis and Zerik.
Stellis knocked on the door of the embassy. Finn sheathed and peace tied his scimitar. He opened the door. "It is good to see you, my friend," he stated as he grabbed the forearm of Stellis. Stellis returned the gesture.
"My friend, we have much to discuss," Stellis replied. To this Finn smiled. The two princes laughed at the formal greetings. It was customary and since they both represented their respective kingdoms they always did the formal greeting when meeting at national buildings.
"My brother, where is Zerik?" Finn asked. "I thought we were starting out an investigation on the ancient pyramid to the south today?"
"He says he found a fourth member to our team. A sorceress elf?" Stellis replied.
"I see, where are we to meet him and the elf? Hopefully, she does not practice bad juju."
"The Laughing Owlbear tavern," Stellis stated. "I hope he isn’t mistaken."

Zerik placed five gold coins called Freemans on the table across from Syl’ima. "I’d like a reading," he stated.
"Gofynnaf i’r Dduwies i arwain cardiau hyn ac yn rhoi atebion gofynnaf am i mi," She said as she held the cards in her hand then handed them to Zerik. "Please shuffle the cards, and I will read them for you."
He shuffled the cards and handed them back to her. She turned over the first one, "I see you are looking for a person," she said as she then turned over the second card. "You think you have found this person, though something is hidden from you." She turned over the third card, "This person will aid you quite well, but you must discover a truth before you can ask her." She turned over the last card and was shocked, "You, you want me to join you?"
Stellis and Finn walked up behind Zerik. "Yeah, we need someone who can do magic," he explained.
"Oh, I see," her voice had a sadness to it. "I only know some cantrips and cartomancy. I am actually a psionicist. I specialize in Psychokinesis. I’m not a sorceress."
"You’re also cursed," Stellis noted. He could see it with his righteousness. He wanted to help her but it was beyond his power. She lowered her head at the statement.
"You’re a what?" Zerik asked confused.
"A psionicist. I have powers of the mind that most do not. In fact I am the first of my people to have these gifts. It is also why I am cursed," She explained.
"We can help you," Finn stated. "What is your name?" Syl’ima hung her head in shame.
"I cannot say, for that is my curse," A tear formed as she continued, "if I tell anyone my name they will die a horrible death. Their blood will be on my hands."
"So what do we call you if we can’t know your name?" Stellis asked.
"A real diamond in the rough," Zerik teased.
"How about we just call you Diamond?" Finn asked.
"If it pleases you, then that is what I shall be called," Syl’ima agreed.
The Empress walked down the corridor of her castle. Her name was Suki. She stood 5 feet three inches tall. She wore her black cloak over a violet gown and had a carved raven amulet around her neck. She walked towards her shrine to Hur. She was pleased with the curse she was deamed to place on the grey elf a few weeks ago and it seemed the goddess was as well. Her son Stellis was going on a new trip and she was worried.
He wanted to go and find out the secret of the pyrimid to the
pyramid to the south, just as his father the emperor did. Myke never came back. She knelt down at the shrine and held her amulet in her hands.
“Oh, great goddess, Hur, I implore you to watch over my son and his companions as the try to discover the secret to the pyramid to the south,” She prayed. “He and Zerik, and Finn and their new companion they call ’Diamond’.
The Pyramid Puzzle
Zerik smiled, "See, I told you she’d be a great addition to our team."
"Let’s introduce ourselves first, Zerik," Stellis said. "I’m Stellis, Prince of Freedonia and Paladin of the God." Upon hearing this Syl’ima lowered her eyes and bowed even further on the table. "Please, there is no need for that," Stellis corrected, "we are all free in Freedonia." She looked up and smiled.
"My what a beautiful smile," Finn stated and kissed her hand. "I am Prince Finn of Sambolia. I am here for adventure with my friends. Your skin is so pale and smooth. It reminds me of the spirit folk in the jungle."
"Quit flirting!" Zerik complained. "I’ll get you some of that jungle weed. That will cool your loins. I’m Zerik, by the way. We are going to the Pyramid to the south to investigate what the locals have called spirits of the damned. We could use your help."
"I would be honored," Syl’ima stated. She curtsied before the friends. "I would greatly appreciate your friendship."
"Then let us make it official," Finn said as he cut his hand. "It is customary in my land if you are to be bound in times of battle to bind each other in blood, as well." He took her small hand and cut it. She winced. He then joined her hand and his and said, "By the love of Hur and Hym, our lives are now joined in friendship and battle. Arise, my sister." Syl’ima rose to her feet.
Stellis took off his right gauntlet and revealed a glowing golden hand. He said a small prayer to Hym under his breath. He touched them both and healed the wounds. Syl’ima was fascinated by the power. It was a divine power, much like the curse on her, not arcane as she was used to seeing.
"That is a remarkable gift you have, Prince Stellis," Syl’ima stated.
"Please, just call me Stellis. We are now family by the Sambolian traditions. The gift is a lesser form of what my mother can do. I can heal or injure with just a touch. Mother can bring life or death. They are the gifts of Hym and Hur. My being a paladin, I’m not as powerful as my mother, who is a cleric. We worship the God and the Goddess," Stellis explained.
"You wear the symbol of Hym," Syl’ima noted. "The silver sword of the God. Does your mother also worship Hym?"
"No, she worships Hur. The symbol of the raven, the Goddess symbol, adorns her cloak," Stellis continued. "Freedonia is dedicated to both Hym and Hur."
"Oh, come on, we’ve got a pyramid to explore," Zerik hurried.
"Come, my brothers,.. and sister," Finn paused. He wasn’t used to having a female companion. "Let us make preparations and and travel with haste. I think Zerik may explode if we must wait here much longer."
"Just give him a ball of twine, that will keep him occupied," Stellis teased. Zerik gave him a dirty look. Syl’ima wondered what she was missing in that context.
"I only have this," Syl’ima said holding the five gold Freemans and three silver coins. "I will not have much for rations or bolts."
"Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered," Stellis assured her.
"Yeah, and what they won’t buy I can steal," Zerik quipped which spawned a dirty look from Stellis. Zerik laughed.

After obtaining some gear for the travel they set out on horseback towards the pyramid in the south. No one knew who built it or why. The road seemed pretty uneventful. Syl’ima listened to the banter from her companions. It was clear that Zerik was lighthearted and laughed the most. Stellis was very serious and often the butt of Zerik’s jokes. Finn was definitely a flirt, but also kind and cared deeply for his companions. They would try to bring Syl’ima out of her shell at times, but she felt that she was learning more just listening to them.
They made camp for the night. Finn had hunted two rabbits for dinner while Zerik and Stellis gathered fire wood for the fire. Syl’ima set up the tents which was easy with her telekinesis. Finn prepared the rabbits while Zerik set up the fire. He went to his pack to find his flint and steel.
"Stellis," Zerik called out, "I forgot to pack my flint and steel. Do you have yours?"
"Allow me," Syl’ima said as she she concentrated on the wood with her psychokinetic powers. She sped up the molecules in the wood until they caught fire.
"Wow, Diamond," Zerik said in amazement. "Remind me to never piss you off." Syl’ima smiled. "Did you see that, Stellis? She started the fire with her mind. She will be handy to have around."
Finn brought the rabbits to cook. He used his seasoning from the island of Sambolia. She thought the smell was enticing. "We do not have these tasty creatures on Sambolia," Finn explained. "We usually have domesticated animals such as chickens and cattle. When we want a feast we hunt wild bore. They usually feed an entire village."
Syl’ima nodded her head. She had never been out of her home in the mountain forest before the accident that got her cursed. The only reason she was here now was because she was exiled. This was all very new to her. She had heard of the pyramid, but never expected to see it.
"Why do you wish to investigate the pyramid?" Syl’ima asked.
"Well, the locals claim restless spirits have appeared there recently," Stellis started.
"That’s a nice way of saying zombies," Zerik interjected.
"Many say there is a great fortune hidden within the pyramid, and an artifact of great power left by the people who built it," Finn continued.
"No one knows for certain?" Syl’ima questioned.
"No one has gotten past the first antechamber. Too many traps," Zerik laughed. "The four of us will discover the truth."
"Zerik has never doubted our abilities. We will try to solve the puzzle," Stellis stated. "My holy powers should allow us to fight through the zombies and find out what has caused them to rise."
"Who would bury an artifact of great power?" Syl’ima questioned.
"Someone who doesn’t want it falling into the wrong hands," Finn answered. Finn tore off a leg from the rabbit and took a bite. "We will find it, or die trying."
"I have no plans to die, at least not until my curse is removed," Syl’ima said. She sliced off some meat with her sword and place it on some bread. She quickly cleaned her sword and sheathed it. She took a bite and was pleased by the taste.
"None of us plans to die. It is an inevitable truth that we all die at some point," Stellis explained. "We just live our lives as best we can to please the gods."
Syl’ima decided to change the subject on that note. “You seem to be great friends, when and how did you meet?”
“Stellis’ and my parents were friends,” Finn started. “When his parents became the rulers of Freedonia, my father and I came to the celebration. Stellis and I were children so we ran off to play together. We continue to get together every year there after and have fun.”
“I met Zerik at the Temple of Hym,” Stellis stated. “I felt drawn to Hym and followed the teachings of the priests. Zerik was there and was always cracking jokes, and generally annoying the priests. I saw he had a talent for opening things and sneaking. I enjoyed his jokes, and we became friends. He has often accomponied Finn and myself on adventures.”
“How did you end up at the Temple of Hym, Zerik?” Syl’ima questioned.
“I’m an orphan,” Zerik explained. “According to the priests, my mother dropped me off there when the wood elves saw I was part Raksasha. They killed my father, and probably my mother, but my mother took me to the temple and I was raised there.”
“What about you, Diamond? How did you end up in Freedonia?” Zerik asked.
“I’m the first elf psionicist,” Syl’ima started. “No one had heard of the powers of the mind, other than spells that can duplicate the effects. I was called in front of my king, King Sy’lan’this Ol’hid’ran, who desired a demonstration. I was nervous. I never expected to be called in front of the king. I attempted to raise his throne into the air, when it suddenly exploded.”
“The king saw this as an attempt on his life and had me seized,” Syl’ima continued. “I was brought before the clerics of Hur, who were told to come up with a fitting punishment. That is when I was cursed. The king did not think that was enough. Knowing my curse, he exiled me.”
“I came to Freedonia, because I heard they give people a second chance,” Syl’ima concluded. “I did not ever expect to be given the friendship of two princes. It is an honor to have met you.” Tears were streaming down her face by this time. She missed her home.
“We did not mean to upset you,” Stellis stated as he put a gloved hand on her shoulder. He was trying to console her. She placed her hand on top of his and looked up at him. He could see the great sorrow in her eyes, but he could also see the beginnings of friendship.
“I know,” Syl’ima confirmed, “it’s just so recent. I never wanted to leave Cerrig Du. I’m sure the king exiled me to make my curse unbearable. At home people knew me, so, I wouldn’t have to say my name. Here no one knows me.”
“Fear not, Diamond, we will get this curse removed from you,” Finn reaffirmed.
“My mother is a cleric of Hur. We will ask her if she knows how to remove your curse when we return,” Stellis offered. Syl’ima allowed a spark of hope to show upon her face. “For now, we should get some rest.”
“Good idea,” Zerik agreed. “I’ll take third watch.” He stretched out on his bedroll and pretended to snore. He heard a quiet quack of a duck. “Damn ghost duck.”
“Ghost duck?” Syl’ima questioned.
“As near as we can tell, it’s the ghost of a duck he ate for dinner years ago,” Stellis clarified.
“We thought it was a joke at first,” Finn stated. “Then Stellis saw it. It really does haunt Zerik.”
“Does not the ability ’turn undead’ drive it away?” Syl’ima wondered.
“My guess is it is immune to the ability because, Hym saw it as a way to punish Zerik for the many slights he has done to the priests of Hym at the temple,” Stellis concluded. “Zerik’s my best friend, but he can get into quite a bit of trouble.”
“Get some rest,” Stellis commanded, “I’ll take first watch. I’ll wake Finn in a couple of hours to take second watch. Zerik called third, so he’ll wake you for last watch. We’ve never traveled with a full blooded elf. We all sleep. We can get by with six hours sleep, but prefer eight. What do elves do?”
“We enter a trance like state in which we remember our entire lives. It usually takes about four hours. We call it Reverie. I will await Zerick’s end of the watch.” She retired to her tent. She removed her cloak and settled on her bedroll. As her body relaxed, she entered the trance like state of Reverie and began to remember her life up to this point. Her violet eyes were open but seemed distant.
After four hours she came out of her Reverie. Her eyes had tears in them as she had finished with the still fresh memories of why she had been cursed. She put her cloak back on and dried the tears in her eyes. Stepping out of the tent to see Zerik still groggy but standing watch over the others. He was sitting by the fire and yawning. She gave a small wave to him.
“Morning, Diamond,” Zerik whispered, “It’s a little early for you to be up, isn’t it?”
“No, I have had my four hours reverie,” Syl’ima stated. She sat down next to him and brought out some travel supplies to make breakfast. She began mixing ingredients in a pot that would be place on the wire grate over the fire. It included berries she had picked from the local flora. She knew which plants were edible.
“That must have been some nightmare you had,” Zerik started, “I heard you crying when I walked by your tent.”
“It wasn’t a nightmare,” Syl’ima explained. “It was a memory. It was not a pleasant one. I do not dream in reverie. It’s a trance state. You would have heard this earlier had you not wanted to sleep first.”
“So, what are you making?” Zerik inquired.
“Nam’ari. It is an elven dish. I was pleased by the meal Finn made last night. I wish to return the favor this morning. It should be ready when Finn and Stellis awake.” She placed the pot on the grate over the fire.
“It already smells good,” Zerik complimented. She seemed startled by his statement. “I’m half Raksasha, as well as elf, remember? I have better senses than most people. It comes in handy when you steal for a living.” He suddenly went silent, and then she heard the noise as well.
“Blei’ddia’id!” Syl’ima cried. Zerik looked confused and she remembered he did not speak elvish. “Wolves!” She stood up and readied her sword as she saw five wolves emerge from the shadows. They were growling and obviously hungry. Zerik drew his daggers and prepared to fight.
Stellis and Finn scrambled out of their tents weapons ready. Neither had on their armour. They heard the cries and made sure they would fight. The first wolf lunged towards Stellis. He swung wide with the flat of his sword knocking it to the ground with no real damage to the creature.
Zerik threw a dagger at it as another lunged towards Finn. Finn sliced the wolfs head off. He looked at Stellis and said while smiling, “That is how you stop them from attacking again.”
Stellis laughed as the third one sprung forward towards Diamond. She grabbed hold of it with her telekinesis. It yelped in terror. She took her sword to its neck and severed an artery. She flung it to the side.
Another Wolf made an attempt to attack Stellis, it circled the unarmored paladin. It growled as if to scare him. That’s when the final one sprung out of the shadows and attacked Finn. Seeing the opportunity to attack Stellis, the fourth one lunged at him to find itself held in the air. Syl’ima held it with her telekinesis. It yelped in terror as Finn lobbed off the head of it’s companion. It struggled to get back to the ground but she held it with her mind. Syl’ima, Stellis, Finn , and Zerik surrounded the wolf. Stellis took out some beef jerky and gave it to the Wolf.
"It’s just hungry," Stellis explained. "It smelled whatever you are cooking and knew there was prey in the area." Syl’ima set back down on the ground and watched it run off back into the woods.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The early morning light cracked through the curtains of the Suki’s chamber. She stretched and yawn before dressing for a short trip to the temple of Hym. She brushed her long dark hair. Her intense blue eyes were focused on the task at hand.
She had been summoned by the High Priest of Hym. Morrek was an old friend. It was not unusual for them to get together and chat about old times. She was the High Priestess of Hur and they often collaborated on festivals. She did not know of any coming up, so, she was not certain why he had summoned her. He was Myke’s mentor and maybe he had found some information concerning the missing Emperor.
Moonwind
As they walked towards the pyramid, they had already taken out a few wandering zombies. Now they saw many standing in the way of the pyramid. Syl’ima noticed two entrances. One on the lower levels, and one at the top. They had to get past the zombies first.
"I can always call upon Him to drive the zombies away," Stellis pointed out.
"Won’t they just come back while we’re in there?" Zerik asked.
"It would be better to destroy the undead rather than have them return while we investigate," Finn explained.
"What do you think, Diamond?" Stellis asked.
"I agree with Finn. Destroying the unfortunate is a better fate than driving them away," Syl’ima concluded.
"Well said, they are an abomination to the God, and, Goddess," Stellis agreed. "Be careful that they don’t bite you. The curse is transmitted by their bite. You are already cursed, Diamond, you don’t need another." She nodded in agreement.
Finn and Stellis took the lead slicing off the heads of zombies in single blows. Finn with his scimitar and Stellis with his sword. Zerik would sneak up behind the zombies with his knives and and remove their heads. Syl’ima used her molecular agitation on them. Their rotting flesh would begin to bubble and then the putrid fluid would burst into flame until only ash remained of the zombies.
They started to head to the lower entrance when Syl’ima asked them a question.
"Has anyone attempted to enter through the upper entrance?" She asked and the stunned looks on her companions faces gave her an answer.
"I don’t think so, Diamond, why?" Stellis asked.
"Well, if no one has made it past the first antechamber on the lower levels maybe they were entering the wrong entrance," Syl’ima pointed out.
"She has a point," Zerik agreed. They began trudging up the stairs to the upper entrance. Once they made it to the entrance it appeared to just enter an empty room.
"There’s nothing here," Zerik noted. "Maybe, there’s a secret passage? Let’s search." He began by feeling the stones on the floor, then heading to the walls.
Finn started with the west wall, while Stellis started with the east. Syl’ima started with the north wall and found a small hidden panel. It slid opened and revealed a serpentine armlet of silver with emeralds for eyes. She could sense magic about it, but could not identify the type. She needed someone with better expertise.
"Stellis, what do you think of this?" Syl’ima asked. She held out the armlet. Stellis came over. Stellis examined it.
"This is a protective magic armlet," he concluded. "You found it, it’s yours." He handed it back to her. She slid it onto her upper right arm. It complimented the white sleeve of her armor.
"Ah ha!" Zerik exclaimed. "I found it." He pressed a stone on the west wall and a hidden door slid open on the south where the walls met. It revealed a stairway down. "I’ll take point to find any traps." Zerik led the way down followed by Stellis, Syl’ima was told to enter next by Finn who took the rear.
Zerik was very good at disabling traps. Not a single one went off as they descended to the true treasure held within. It appeared to be a burial chamber complete with a sarcophagus. There were piles of gold coins scattered weapons even armor. Zerik started to fill his bag with gold when Stellis stopped him. He pointed to the pictographs on the walls that told a tale.
"Let’s see," Stellis started, "according to this, Him fell in love with a human woman. She was the high priestess of Her. They met in secret. Her grew suspicious of the meetings. Him hid away the priestess and erected this pyramid." He walked over to the symbol of Him. He pressed the silver sword.
An image of a beautiful raven-haired woman with piercing blue eyes appeared before them. She smiled. "Greetings, the first prophecy has been fulfilled," she stated. "I am Moonwind. Former high priestess of Hur. I say former because I betrayed my Goddess. I stole Hym from Hur."
"It was not my intent. I truly loved my Goddess, but, Hym started to come to me more and more. Our love opened a gate to things that were not native to this world. Those touched by this energy have violet eyes." Syl’ima realized she had been touched by this energy. "Not all these that have been touched are evil, but they are not natural. They may have strange abilities. The God, Hym, claims those as his children. He will do his best to protect them, but, Hur is jealous. That is why he hid me away in another realm."
"Now, for the second prophecy. On the island of Sambolia, the energy we released will coalesce into an evil entity. It will consume many and even claim the leader of the nation. His friends will save him and defeat the entity. It will come at a great cost, but they will defeat it."
"Now that you have found this recording, you must hurry. Hur now knows I betrayed her. Take as much gold and finery that you wish. You will not have much time as this place will collapse."
They heard the walls grind and creak. They knew they had to hurry. Zerik grabbed as much gold into his pack as he could and activated his boots of great haste. He grabbed Stellis and ran.
The Coronation of Finn
As the pyramid collapsed, Syl’ima noticed an opening above her and Finn. Using her telekinesis she took herself and Finn up through this opening. She then began to air walk down to where Stellis and Zerik were arguing.
"How are you doing this?" asked Finn.
"It is simply using my telekinesis as a stairway down," Syl’ima replied.
As they approached they could hear the argument between Stellis and Zerik. "...They’re stuck in there. You may have just killed them," Stellis pointed to the collapsing pyramid.
"I can only save one of you at a time, Stellis, I chose you. You’re my oldest friend," Zerik reminded him.
"Isn’t Finn your friend too? And what about Diamond? We gave our word that we’d help her. They could both be dead now because you saved me," Stellis shouted at Zerik.
"No they’re not. They found another way out," Zerik smiled.
"How do you know that?" Stellis argued.
"Because they are standing right behind you," Zerik pointed behind Stellis at Diamond (Syl’ima) and Finn as she made the final step to the ground. Stellis turned around. Relief washed over his face.
"It is nice to know that you hold your word so high," Syl’ima stated with a hug. "It is also nice to know that Zerik trusts our abilities to get out."
"My brothers, we must hurry. The second prophecy involves my home of Sambolia, and my father. We need to get back there," Finn clarified.
"Agreed, my brother, we’ll take a ship from Freedonia," Stellis agreed.
"Diamond, this will be the first time you will see my homeland," Finn stated. "I would not leave you behind as you have saved my life. I owe you now, I will do all in my power to remove the curse on you. Come, sister."
The four companions returned to Freedonia and packed for the trip to Sambolia. This wasn’t hard for Syl’ima, she didn’t have anything to pack. They made sure she had enough to get by. More bolts for her hand crossbow, a sharpening stone for her sword, rations.
They set sail for Sambolia. This was the first time Syl’ima had ever sailed. It took her a while to gain her sea legs. She noted the friendship of her companions and hoped one day they would see her as such. She sat by the railing of the ship with her hood on. she was looking at the sea but not seeing it as she was deep in contemplation. Zerik came by and sat down beside her.
"A copper piece for your thoughts?" Zerik offered. Syl’ima smiled at the gesture.
"I have found out that I am unnatural, and, that I have been touched by this demonic energy. Now we go to fight this demon," Syl’ima looked out to the sea.
"So what if you’re not natural," Zerik stated. "I mean look at me, I’m half elf and half Rakasha. That’s not natural either. It’s never stopped me. I met Stellis as a child. Finn a few years ago. Now, I’ve met you. You know what, you’re pretty awesome. When I saw you walking away from that pyramid with Finn, I thought ’that is cool, she’s walking on air!’"
Syl’ima smiled at Zerik, she could see why Stellis and Finn liked him. "Thank you, you are a good friend, Zerik. I noticed you grabbed Stellis first. He must be your best friend."
"Yeah, I knew I could get the rest of you if I needed to, but Stellis started yelling at me," Zerik confided. Syl’ima gave him a hug. The two of them got up and joined Stellis and Finn for dinner.
They sat down to a feast that was prepared for them. A roasted bore with exotic fruits and spices. It smelled heavenly. Syl’ima noticed a man who would cut off a small piece of each item and eat it before handing the plate to Finn. She had heard royalty employed food tasters to make sure the food was not poisoned. It was the first time she had seen one do his job.
"My friends," Finn began, "I am sorry we had to cut our adventure short. I fear for my father. He had entrusted me with this," he held up the magical rod. It was beautiful, gold encrusted with a row of gems. Syl’ima guessed each gem triggered a different effect. "The Rod of Sambolia. It is the symbol of our leadership. Without this, he is vulnerable to this evil entity that has emerged from the ether."
"So we have to get back there," Stellis stated. "Because the prophecy stated the King would die and be saved by his friends."
"Why should we believe this ’Moon Wind’?" Zerik asked. "She already betrayed Her. How can we trust her visions?"
"Because of Him," Syl’ima interjected. "She betrayed Her for Him. He continued her gifts from Her. Whatever this entity is, we know she saw it because of what she did in her betrayal to Her. This information comes from Him."
"Exactly," Finn agreed, "Until the world is destroyed, we have the chance to try and fix this. That is why Moonwind gave us the prophecy. We may not be able to stop it but we should at least try. I do not intend to embrace death willingly, I intend to fight for my life with each breath."
The four of them clinked there glasses in agreement. They ate their feast and enjoyed each others company well into the night. They arrived at the island a few days later. They grabbed their gear and headed ashore.
As they disembarked from the ship they were greeted by another dark skinned man with a long beard and dreadlocks. He was even larger than Finn and had a brightly swirled colored headband on. He was accompanied by five men in armor. When Finn started down the gangplank, they all knelt and lowered their heads.
"Dee Jay, my friend, why do you bow?" Finn questioned. "I consider you my brother, not my servant." Finn gestured for him to stand.
"Yes, my liege, it is to honor your new position," Dee Jay responded. "Your father, he is... dead." He stood with his eyes still lowered. He did not want to give his friend the news, but knew he had to. He saw the color drain from Finn’s face.
"What! We came back to prevent this!" Finn exclaimed. "The prophecy warned us of this." Finn looked as if he were about to collapse when Dee Jay grabbed his arms.
"Hey, man, what prophecy do you speak of, and who is this pale elf behind you?" Dee Jay snapped him out of the shock. "She looks as pale as the spirits." Syl’ima blushed as the dark man flashed a smile at her.
"Oh, forgive my manners. This lovely elf is called ’Diamond’. She is my newest companion," Finn stated. Dee Jay bowed towards Syl’ima.
"Lady Diamond, we consider you an honored guest for the coronation of King Finn of Sambolia," Dee Jay stated, "as are Prince Stellis and Lord Zerik."
"I like you, Dee Jay," Zerik said as he hugged the large man, "you’re the only person who calls me Lord." Dee Jay smiled at the fuzzy half elf. "Just make sure you have some of that Jungle Weed at the coronation. That will make me happy."
"Consider it done, man," Dee Jay smiled.
He then whispered into Finn’s ear, "You have the rod still, don’t you?"
"Yes," Finn whispered back. "Later tell me why this happened."
"Prince Stellis, it is always a pleasure to see you, man," Dee Jay greeted. "Is there anything special you require for the coronation?"
"No, but my condolences to my friend Finn, and congratulations on your new position," Stellis commented. "Perhaps you may find a gown for Lady Diamond? All she owns is on her person."
"Of course, man," Dee Jay bowed, "I will make the arrangements. Please, follow me to the palace." Dee Jay took the lead and the warriors walked along beside the four companions with one at the rear. They followed a path through the palm trees and brush to a beautiful palace of white stone and wood. The towers looked so different to what Syl’ima was used to. The archway was magnificently designed.
The warriors took their posts once they were inside the palace. Dee Jay led them down a corridor to their individual chambers. Zerik was given his first. In which case he decided to jump onto the bed and sprawl out. Finn and Stellis just smiled as Syl’ima looked on in shock.
Dee Jay opened the door to her chamber, "I hope you find everything to your liking, Lady Diamond." A large bed sat near a window it had beautifully sculpted posts made of mahogany a canopy of violet with matching sheets. The wardrobe was also mahogany, as was the nightstand. All were beautifully crafted. Syl’ima turned around in disbelief.
"It’s more than I deserve," she stated with her head lowered.
"Nonsense," Finn replied, "Diamond, you saved my life. You deserve more than this. I doubt you would take more, but you deserve better than life has given you." Syl’ima blushed again.
"I see she is quite humble, Master Finn," Dee Jay commented. "These are your quarters, Lady Diamond. Your gown will arrive shortly. Please relax, and enjoy the hospitality."
Syl’ima bowed and and smiled at their generosity. She laid on the bed and rested. She thought of her life up to this point. Discovering her powers at a very young age and spending years learning how to use them. As a grey elf she was quite studious and was rarely outside. This accounted for her pale skin.
When the king of the grey elves caught tale of her powers he wanted a demonstration. With her nerves very high she attempted to raise his throne into the air. Instead she caused it to explode. The king was horrified, so was she.
She was seized by the guards and the king ordered the clerics of Her to decide Syl’ima’s fate. That was when she was cursed, and exiled. Tears came to her eyes. She had never been outside the kingdom. She had only read of the outside world in her books. She had no desire to explore. Her had other ideas for Syl’ima.
There was a knock at the door. Syl’ima opened it to see Dee Jay holding a gown for her. It was brightly colored and beautiful.
"Your gown, Lady Diamond," Dee Jay stated as he held out the gown. "These ladies are here to fit it to your frame," he continued as two ladies entered the room. They had pins, and tape, and needles and thread. "Please excuse me as I am needed in Prince Finn’s quarters."
"Of course," Syl’ima said in astonishment. Dee Jay bowed and walked down the corridor. As Syl’ima closed the door, the ladies started to strip her of her armor and measure her. They made notes on the paper beside the gown. Before she knew it the gown was fitted to her frame and on her. They stood her in front of a full length mirror, and she saw the the beautiful gown. The color brought out much needed color in her skin. It was very complementing. For the first time in weeks Syl’ima smiled. The ladies smiled and bowed as they left.
She left her quarters and walked to Zerik’s. She knew where his quarters were. She hoped he knew where Stellis’ and Finn’s quarters were and they could go to the coronation together. She meekly knocked on Zerik’s door.
"Diamond!" Zerik greeted as he opened his door, "we were just talking about you." She saw Stellis already in the room. "We were wondering how long it would take for you to be ready."
"You look quite stunning, Diamond," Stellis commented. Syl’ima blushed. He wore a deep violet jacket with his family crest embroidered on the left breast, white gloves and trousers. His boots were impeccable. His ginger hair was pulled back into a ponytail and a red sash went from his right shoulder to his left hip.
Zerik was dressed in a black tunic and trousers. His brown belt had a single dagger peace tied on it. His boots had been polished and repaired. There was no family crest for Zerik. That meant he was actually a commoner. She was also a commoner, this made her feel more welcome. Two princes had accepted two commoners as companions and equals.
"Where is Finn?" Syl’ima asked. "I thought we would go to his coronation together?"
"He is to go by himself," Stellis chuckled. "It is traditional for them to come escorted only by family for the coronation. Although, we are brothers in arms, we are not brothers by blood. We will meet him there." He opened the door and held it for "Diamond" and Zerik before he left the room.
Finn talked to Dee Jay in his quarters, "My friend, what happened to father?"
"He went out to check why villagers were disappearing, man," Dee Jay clarified. "Those who brought this to his attention, brought tales of a demonic beast with glowing violet eyes. A giant beast in the jungle."
"He gave orders if he did not return, upon your return you would be crowned. His corpse was discovered last week. I am sorry, Finn," Dee Jay explained.
"I see, Dee Jay," Finn exhaled. "I must do something tonight after the coronation. I know the people will not accept Stellis as their ruler, but I name him my proxy if I do not return. I must avenge my father."
"Of course, Finn," Dee Jay agreed. "He will serve until you return or a new ruler is chosen."
"I will speak with him after the ceremony. Please do not mention this to anyone. You are my oldest friend, and most trusted adviser," Finn stated as they began down the corridor towards the ceremony.
The ceremony was simple if not for the pomp surrounding it. A simple silver circlet was his crown, and Syl’ima wondered why such a big deal was made of it. Stellis pointed out that silver was prominent in the mountains of the island and gold was very scarce. That is why his crow was silver. The simplicity was Finn’s choice. He didn’t like to be gawked at and treated his people with respect and kindness.
Zerik was smoking some strange jungle weed that Syl’ima assumed was a drug that he enjoyed. She danced and enjoyed the people. She even saw Dee Jay smiling as she danced. Finn walked over to Stellis and the two talked.
"My brother, I have named you my proxy," Finn told Stellis. "If I should disappear as my father did, you will rule in my stead."
"I’m honored, Finn," Stellis graciously accepted the rod being handed to him. "Why hand me the Rod of Sambolia?"
"It’s the only way my people will follow you," Finn explained. "I have to avenge my father, please do not try to stop me. I must do this."
"You don’t have to do this alone," Stellis stated. "Zerik, Diamond and I will gladly help."
"I am aware of this," Finn began, "but, this is something I need to attempt alone first as a show of strength. If I don’t return by morning come looking for me."
"As you wish, King Finn," Stellis smiled.
