The Hierophant

Since Gideon is a standup comedian I’m able to tell a lot of his personal believes through his set. Hopefully you can see that he’s somehow cynical and hopeful at the same time for the future. It’s one of his "suffer the children moments", this time in his on words.

Excerpt from The Hierophant,

I was at the library the other day. To rent a movie, they have movies now. And take a shower in the bathroom sink. I recognized some of you from there, didn’t I? Anyways, when I’m paper toweling off, this kid comes in with one of those Reggie Jackson and the Poseidon Adventure of whatever books, and I’ve always been fascinated in mythologies and folk lore, so I asked him, you know how do you explain all the different names of the gods, are they actually different gods. I don’t know because the movie version is at the downtown branch and they kicked me out there for sleeping in the stalls. Ahem, the kid. The kid says that they are two sides of the same coin. That its like its their personality, their language. They are gods to both peoples, and fulfill different roles sometimes. I thought that was so cool, its like I’ve been calling my mail carrier Denise, for as long as I’ve known her, and I just found out its actually Ben, and I’m sure he hates it. But Denise is cool, she’s just been going with that shit.

I started recommending some similar books to him, some of Joseph Cambell’s work, who I call the God Collecter, because his life work was to examine the similar structure in all religions, and what purposes they served. More importantly, he wrote about why we should we still be telling ourselves these stories, and what stories should we work on together to account for all the new information we’ve acquired, about since Caesar got voted out by a knife in the back.
