One morning, Jeyes is sleeping soundly within the cave. She is soon awakened by the noise of the other Doms rushing outside. Alarmed, she gets up and follows. As she walks out onto the plains, she spots Avalon standing among a crowd of Doms. She rushes over to him.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Jeyes asks. Avalon motions toward the sky. She looks up and can’t believe her eyes as dark, ominous clouds slowly blanket the area. The Doms have never seen anything like this before.
Nearby, the Celestes look on with a sense of growing dread.
Jeyes glances toward the hill and realizes the clouds are beginning to blot out the sun. Frightened, she tears away from the group and dashes in that direction. Avalon follows behind her.
The two reach the hill and watch helplessly as the clouds encroach on the sun. Slowly but surely, the sun vanishes behind them, its radiant light along with it.
The entire land is now shrouded in darkness.
“I don’t get it,” Jeyes says, panicked. “Why is this happening?”
“I don’t know,” Avalon answers, feeling panicked as well. “I mean, the sun is gonna come back, right?”
Jeyes hesitates, unsure of the answer. However, she sees the worry on Avalon’s face.
“Of course it will,” she says with a reassuring smile, keeping up a positive front. “I bet you these clouds will be outta here in no time!”
“Yeah,” Avalon says as he smiles back. Jeyes nods and looks up at the sky, her smile slowly giving way to uncertainty.
Thirty days later, a group of Celestes stands at the top of the falls, surveying the land below. The once-vibrant forest was losing its sheen, while the sparkling water of the falls had begun to grow murky. The Celestes had also lost their vivid glow; their energy cores had begun to lose their energy. They look at each other, acknowledging that they need a plan. They leave the falls and head to the Pyre Fields.
Once at the fields, the group of Celestes examines the Pyre Flowers. Despite being cut off from the sun, the flowers still have small reservoirs of energy stored inside of them.
Back at the Mecco Plains, the Doms lie about listlessly. Just like the Celestes, their energy cores have begun to lose energy. Avalon rests against a rock, staring blankly at the dark clouds above. He sighs and then directs his gaze toward the hill. There sits Jeyes, fixated on the spot where the sun once shined brightly. Avalon gets up and walks over to the hill. He stops short of reaching Jeyes, uncertain of how to approach her. He takes a deep breath and then walks up behind her. He taps her on the shoulder, and she turns around.
“Oh, hey, Avalon,” she says. Avalon sits down beside her and looks up at the spot in the sky as well. “You’re still waiting for the sun?” he asks.
“Yeah,” Jeyes answers. The two sit in silence.
“What if it doesn’t come back?” Avalon suddenly asks.
“It will,” Jeyes says, not missing a beat.
“But how do you—”
“It has to!” Jeyes suddenly yells, interrupting Avalon. He looks at her, startled. She looks back at him. “Right?”
Avalon looks away, unable to answer her question. Just then, the two spot the Celestes making their way out of the Pyre Fields, holding a bunch of Pyre Flowers in their arms. They make their way across the plains toward the cave. Intrigued, Avalon and Jeyes get up and follow.
Once at the cave, the Celestes lay the Pyre Flowers on the ground as the Doms gather around them. Avalon and Jeyes push their way to the front of the crowd. One of the Celestes steps forward and begins to speak.
“We’ve seen you Doms use the energy particles from these flowers as mere frivolities,” it says. “Now let’s see if you can harness them for a more important purpose.” It picks up a flower and holds it out to one of the Doms. “Here,” it says. “Extract the particles from this flower and see if you can form them into a ball of energy.”
The Dom nods and extracts the particles. Effortlessly, he then merges them into a single, tiny spark.
“Now, try to absorb it into your core,” the Celeste commands.
The Dom tries to absorb the spark but is unable to. The Celeste takes the spark in its hand and then places it on the Dom’s energy core. The core flashes as it absorbs the spark.
Everyone is in shock.
The Celeste holds out another flower.
“Repeat it,” it says.
The Dom creates another spark. This time, the Celeste absorbs it into itself, causing its body to flash.
The Celeste looks at the others. They have found their solution.
It looks back at the Doms.
“As you’ve observed, we’re able to use these flowers to maintain our energy in the sun’s absence,” the Celeste says. “We Celestes are unable to harness their energy ourselves, and you are unable to absorb their energy without our help.”
It pauses and picks up one of the flowers.
“The time for a leisurely lifestyle is over,” it continues. “All that matters now is survival. And in order for that to work…
…we must all do our part.”
