Monsters on the Moon Prologue

January 18, 2089. Group E arrived at space station Crimson. The Earth in the process of being relocated to the moon, this two years after Group A made initial contact. Group A was a designed combination of different types people; the best of the best, the brightest and smartest, and of course the richest. Some earned their way onto The Avanti ship, through recommendations and merit, while others, more commonly bought their way on. The Avanti ship was named after the Italian word “Avanti” meaning forward. The only thing the Earth could do was move forward and this was the starting point. Sending this group to the moon would mean the human race would continue to move forward. The earth was in shambles, but a persons worth still held power. Not so much money but what you had, what you could offer that others couldn’t. Some has power over the gas and oil of the world, while other controlled large amounts of land and food. When the idea of relocation grew throughout the world the idea of taking the world to the moon moved quickly to the top of the list. When Group A arrived, the moon was null and void, but to the first group that was sent, the moon was a blank canvas, a place to create a new world that would be inviting and would make future citizens feel welcome. Comfort was not important to some, just making a place for people to come would have made many happy but a small group, just a few, thought that having a place that would feel like home was more important.

Group A was given the task of creating a place that would welcome all new comers with a warm embrace. They were given little guidelines with unlimited resources. With this they built a beautiful city, the city of Sperare. The city of Sperare was a place that was built with the utmost care; it was built for not only the rich but for every person that made it to the moon.

Periodically the earth would receive updates for the moon. These updates would talk of plans and progress, and at times pictures would be sent. Though the first city took a long time to build the world was happy with the result. The timing didn’t hurt ether; the earth was not dead but was dying. The world’s population had been cut in half by the time of completion.

The first transport ship, the Coraggio, left just a few days after report of completion arrived to earth. The city quickly filled and construction began on more cities, which were called sectors. By this point, and the speed of arrivals, the care put into the first city was thrown aside and the new cities were made just to be habitable. By the time Group E left Earth the population had been cut to fewer than one billion and people were dying daily. We were the last group to leave the earth; this is not what was planned. It was just what was, by the time the transport ship returned they could find no sign of life on the earth.

The leaders of the Earth at this point made a decision, the decision had been discussed and mentioned but no one knew what the final vote was until everyone from the moon saw the explosion. It was a mixture between turning a light on in the distance and fireworks. From the Capital city people witnessed the earth light up like never before, it was an explosion of fire and Earth. It was a beautifully sad sight. To see your home, everyone’s home made into nothing more then ruble was a depressing scene.

All was not lost, this act inspired hope, a hope that this act cleaned the earth of any disease or sickness and that one-day we might return.

We have just started settling into things. Before we left Earth the moon was spoken of as if it were a paradise, a place of serenity, a place that would be safe for us to live and continue the human race. It was supposed to be the answer to prayers. The moon was a way for people to receive a new beginning. I pictured it as this beautiful place with nice houses and a society that was filled with wonderful people who would create some kind of peaceful place. The moon was supposed to be ready for us when we arrived.

Sperare, aka “The Capital,” was well constructed and very appealing. The ships from earth would arrive to the south of The Capital and would be greeted by volunteers who were assigned with comforting the newcomers and separating them into the near by facilities. The Capital was quickly filled and due to the continuous growing numbers of arrivals Sperare was forced to build near by sectors or towns. When Group E. arrived there were three complete sectors and a fourth was under construction.

The rest of Group E. were inspected and given an orientation of The Capital city and of the rules and laws by which they were to follow while on the moon. After sitting through orientation you are fed. The volunteers give soup with all food that was grown here on the moon. The soup had potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and a very small about of meat. You couldn’t tell if it was deer or beef but no one cared, most were starving. After you finish eating they assigned people to their new living quarters. There were no openings in The Capital or sector 1. Sector 2 had a few openings, but they were reserved. Sector 3 had just been completed. They gave some choice but after the fact they found that the closer to The Capital, the better the living conditions. Most of the group chose sector 3 including his best friend Matthews’s family and his. His mother must have figured that living in new construction would be nice.

They were wrong or misinformed, whatever the case may be when they arrived at Sector 3, there new home was nothing more than a shell of a place. A place where even though it was new construction was already falling apart. Speed was the most important goal during the construction, due to the fact that Earth was failing, but at the same time these facilities were barely habitable. Sector 3 was created in a hurry and it was obvious that many corners were cut during construction and obviously there were no building codes or guidelines.

They didn’t need to see the other sectors to know that this was the worst but at the same time they seemed just happy to be alive and to have finally made it. I know I was relieved to know they were here safe and sound. Even though this place was discouraging, to say the least, they knew the place had potential. Plus, they were the first people to arrive in sector 3 so they were given the choice to make any changes that they wanted. They were told to do there best to make this place livable and that is exactly what they were going to do.

Being alive and living are two very different things. My name isn’t important, at least not yet, and I believe that this place, the moon, our new home can be a place that we cannot only survive but thrive as a species. We made the decision as a people to leave the earth, our home for millions of years and come to the moon. Why would we do this? We would do this to survive, the reason that motivates any and every decision. Every human being has a decision to make and they are forced to choose, fight or flight. In this case we chose to live. The Earth was coming to its end and to this point the farthest we could make it was the closest habitable place to the Earth. The moon.

They sent people ahead of time; though it did not look very promising they decided we could make it work and that it was better than the alternative, giving up. So they build a small place, just the size of a city. There were not to many people who were left on the Earth, compared to the close to nine billion the population had grown too, but who we did have, we took.

On the last trip we took to Earth we decided to detonate it. Yes, blow up every bomb, nuke, anything that would destroy everything on Earth. I think we were trying to cleanse the Earth of not only disease and death, but also its history so maybe one day it would correct its self and just maybe one day we would be able to return.

Looking out over this place, I feel like we can do better, I want to live. So that is what I am going to do.
