MEANINGS

Spell of Rain/Summer – Calendar was not invented; the year was marked by seasons, primarily six - spring, summer, rain, autumn, fall winter and winter. The year was marked from one season to another. The most important or rare season was considered for calculation of a year. In dry regions, rain was most important and sought after season. So, year was calculated from beginning of rain to the end of summer. Likewise, in cold regions like Himalayas, summer was the season to look forward to; here the year was calculated form arrival of summer to the end of spring.

Phase of night/day – Time was not divided into hours, minutes and seconds. Generally referred as, Prahar in Sanskrit term. It is a unit of time, or subdivision of the day, approximately three hours long. The day is divided into eight parts: four praharas for the day, and four for the night. The first prahara of the day begins at sunrise, and the fourth prahara of the day ends at sunset. A second round of four praharas unfolds during the night, between sunset and sunrise.

Arsacid    - Also known as  Parthian Empire (/ˈpɑrθiən/; 247 BC – 224 AD),  was a major Iranian political and cultural power in ancient Iran, also known as ancient Persia. The name comes from Arsaces I of Parthia who as leader of the Parni tribe, founded it in the mid third century BC when he conquered the region of Parthia in Iran’s northeast.
