Excerpt from Chapter 1

A young girl walks down the road of a desolate town. Around her is nothing but destruction:

The buildings look as if they are slowly decaying away as they disintegrate into black particles.

Dead bodies litter the streets and sidewalks, also disintegrating into black particles. The bodies turn to dust as they waste away.

The particles are drawn into the girl as she continues to walk, a cloud of dark energy forming behind her.

Her eyes are pitch black. Tears of anger and confusion stream down her face.

“Kill...” she mutters to herself. “I’ll kill them all.”

Everything around her begins to decay at a faster rate. Black particles continue to float from the numerous dead bodies lying about, as well as the buildings and anything in sight, absorbed by the girl.

“I’ll never be hurt again…”

Suddenly, everything around her completely disintegrates, leaving nothing but the floating black particles. They continue to be absorbed into the girl, and the cloud slowly begins to mutate into a pair of dark, nightmarish wings.

They grow larger and larger as the entire city disappears around the girl, leaving nothing behind but a barren wasteland.

A loud, monstrous, shrieking noise pierces through the air...

********************

A young woman jumps up from her bed, drenched in sweat. This is Kim.

She stares ahead of her as she struggles to catch her breath.

It was just a nightmare.

She looks down at her hands, which are trembling badly. She crosses her arms and shoves her hands under her armpits as she doubles over and begins to rock back and forth. She hums a tune to herself as she tries in vain to calm herself down.

Moments later, Kim stands in a training room, landing a flurry of swift kicks to a punching bag, follow by a couple of quick jabs. Her moves are fast and fluent, but also have an air of elegance to them.

She continues to pelt the punching bag, hitting harder and harder each time. She hits it one last time, then stops her assault. She holds on to it as she leans over, catching her breath.

“So, couldn’t sleep, huh?”

Kim turns to see a woman standing in the doorway. This is DIANE. Kim shakes her head "No". Diane chuckles to herself as she walks into the room.

“That nightmare again I bet,” Diane says.

Kim nods her head as she stands upright.

“Why are you awake,” Kim asks.

“Got lost in this new book I brought earlier today,” Diane answered, grinning. “You know how I am, can never put the damn things down.”

Kim cracks a small smile, agreeing with this sentiment, but it quickly disappears. Diane notices her hands.

They’re still shaking.

She looks Kim in the eye, concerned. Kim turns away as she begins to rub her shoulder. Diane walks up to her and throws her arm around Kim, pulling her in tightly and kissing her on the forehead.

“Come on, let’s get you back to sleep,” Diane says, shaking her reassuringly. Kim hesitates, then turns around as Diane leads her towards the door. She gently takes Kim’s hand in hers, and the two walk out of the room.
