Chapter 2

On a silent morning, an alarm was singing to the birdsongs like trying to be part of an orchestra. It could have wake up the entire neighborhood. However, in the bed at the side of the nightstand where the alarm was beeping, was calmly sleeping a girl with all her hair in a mess. A normal person could have heard the alarm almost immediately, but she was just enjoying her sleep without noticing about the awful sounds. Resting on the door frame, a man was shaking his head knowing that he has to do something in order for her to wake up in time. He stomped the door drastically, making the girl sit down almost at the same time. A small smile appeared on his face while locking his gaze on her sleepy eyes.

Crossing his arms, he waited for the girl to turn off the alarm. Once she had yawned, and still looking to the face of the man in front of her she turned it off, and gave him a happy smile. He walked away from the door, and the girl jumped out of bed before falling asleep again. Closing the door of her bedroom, she decided what to pick up from her open closet and walked inside her bathroom.

Walking down the stair, the man heard the door been closed. He let out a small breath thinking how she could have managed to sleep so easily around the alarm’s sound. Stepping into the living room, the man picked up some mail that was standing on the living room corner table. Most of them were invitations and bills that didn’t took too much of his attention. Living those on the kitchen table, he walked to the fridge, from which he took an orange juice bottle. The sun was lighting up the whole kitchen through the glass of the back door. Drinking some of the juice, the man stood there, lost on his thoughts.

Half an hour later, the girl rushed through the stairs, almost tripping in the last step. The man on the kitchen finally got out of his thoughts and looked to the girl who was searching for something on the kitchen table.

“Are you looking for the car keys?” he asked her.

“Humph… yeah, I can’t remember where I put them last night.” She replied immersed on the search.

“You leave them on the corner table in the living room, Faye.” He said showing her a kind smile. “You always have to lose something in the morning, right dear?”

“Don’t mock around, Uncle Steve.” She bellowed. “By the way, good morning!”

“You’re such a kid.” Steve said while looking back at the glass. “Grow up already.”

“I can’t grow up.” She said very serious. “If I do, then I will have to leave you, and as you know I can’t leave my precious uncle behind.”

Steve burst into a laugh, in which the girl accompanied him by showing him a huge smile. Both of them were really happy that morning, as all the other days they have spent together. There were days in which the younger version of the girl had cried and screamed at him, the normal while growing up. However, their lives were normally calm and full of happy moments. Steve didn’t want to give Faye a hard life since she had already had a horrendous past.

“Also, I think I wouldn’t be able to attend our date today.” Faye said.

“Is alright, I have a writers meeting later on too.” He replied locking his gray eyes on her marine ones.

“Anyways, we should do it tomorrow. I don’t want to offend my parents.” She explained with a serious look on her face.

“You have to go now, or you’ll be late.” He bellowed while putting his hands on her shoulders, pushing her out of the kitchen. “Well, I suppose you’re always late.”

Faye frowned her forehead, but instead of replying to her uncle, she just fastens her steps out of the kitchen. Taking the car keys from the small table, she looked back and waved her left hand to his uncle who was standing in the middle of the kitchen giving her at last smile before she was gone to college.

As normal, Faye unlocked her silver ford sedan while walking toward it. She opened the door, and sit down comfortably in the driver’s seat. After putting her seatbelt and switching the engine on, she closed the door car and turned on the radio on her favorite morning station. Looking at the rear-view mirror she pushed the gas pedal while driving back into the street. Driving happily and hearing her favorites songs play on the radio she arrived to the first red light. The song suddenly stopped and silence fill up the small space of the car. She gave it a small gaze before speeding up again on the green light. Luckily, the street was empty, because unexpectedly Faye heard a voice and stepped on the brake pedal with all her strength.

The voice didn’t last too long, but her pale face didn’t look that good. She was visibly scared of hearing a male voice calling her name out of nowhere. Trying to calm down and focus again on the road, she turned off the radio. She tried to convince herself that the voice was something that was going on at the radio station. Past a few seconds she continued driving to the college campus. That mysterious voice didn’t sound anymore, so she parked confidently on the parking lot on the university, and walked off her car into the first building.

The first morning class had already started, so Faye had to enter the classroom slowly without any sound to don’t get caught onto her teacher attention. However, at the end got caught on his attention when he was backwards to the class.

“Miss Crock did you have something to share with all of us?”

“No, Mr. Lopez.” She replied sitting down.

“I see, then I must ask for you to came early tomorrow.” He said looking finally at her.

A hypocrite smile arched on her delicate face, and the professor turned back again to the presentation on the big wall. She let out a big sight. Actually, she wanted to wake up early for that class, yet she always managed to continue sleeping even when the annoying alarm’s sound was trying its best to wake her up. If her uncle was near the classroom he could have ask the professor to give it a try to the alarm’s work in the morning. Thinking on her uncle, a sincere smile appeared on her face.

Finally, after an hour the class ended, and Faye walked out of that room directed to her other class. On the yard hall that linked both buildings, she encountered a blonde girl flirting over with some strangers. Nodding negatively at the sight, she walked to that group. Once the blonde girl saw her, the flirting mode flew away.

“Hey, Faye.” She said smiling broadly.

“Morning, Kate.” Faye replied serious.

“Well, guys I see you around another time. I have to hang around with my best friend now.” She exclaimed to the group.

The blonde girl with honey eyes, sent every boy far away in order to have a decent conversation with her best friend, Faye. Both girls met back on elementary school, and since that time they became inseparable. No one never got to understand that friendship because they were worlds apart. Faye was well known for being a quiet and smart girl who didn’t pay attention to girly things. Instead, Kate was the opposite of that idea. She loved all girly things like flirting with boys, using a lot of makeup, and wasn’t the best on her studies for not paying attention to school matters. Apart from their similarity on their names, they didn’t have anything that could made them similar. Still, they support each other as their best friend without any prejudices.

“I didn’t think that you’ll come today.” Kate said serious.

“Well, I have an important class, and Uncle Steve has a writer meeting.” Faye explained. “So, we decided to do it tomorrow instead.”

“I see.” She replied. “Then will you accept pretty boy request?”

“Oh, look at the time, I have to get going.” Faye responded absent minded. “See you later, Kate.”

“You can run from the question, but it will catch you at the end.” Kate exclaimed at the back of her friend.

Once Faye had disappeared into the next building, Kate let out a sight. Normally, Faye was open to any kind of talk. Kate was a living prove that the girl was never influenced by stereotypes. However, when it comes to her love life it was like she pushed every person that came to her. Maybe because of her past, or maybe because she was scared of falling in love. Neither way, she was continuously seems as refusing any love offer that she received.

Standing in front of the elevator, Faye was anxiously looking at her wrist watch. After a few moments she decided to go to her class by the stairs. She walked by the side of the elevator where the stairs resided. Opening the heavy door, she made her way inside the empty stair hall. Stepping on the echelons she felt how someone hold her hand while calling her. It was the same voice as in the car. Afraid of what or who was standing behind her, she slowly turned back. Yet, she didn’t find any person. The hall was as empty as when she entered it. Her heart start to jump inside her chest with a fear she couldn’t control. Unable to understand what was happening she decided to return to her house, since she believed that finally she have gone crazy. Rushing to the parking lot, she stumbled upon a man of Steve’s age. She tried to apologize, but listening to the voice of the person made her whole body shiver.

“Long time waiting to meet you, Faye.” The man said with a cold voice and a dangerous look on his eyes.

She recognized the voice as the same one that had heard before. Terrify of the person who was in front of her, she felt how her heart was jumping, however, she didn’t move from the place. The worst scenarios always came after someone bursting into running, it was a better idea to try to remain calm. However, after giving her a hard glance, the man disappeared into the thin air. That made her even more nervous than she was at first. Standing on the parking lot, she lost conscience of the time for a few minutes, thinking on what exactly had just happened in front of her eyes. Her mind was being filled with the craziest ideas she could have ever had. Once she returned to reality, she rushed to her car without a second thought. The only thing that remained on her mind was to see her uncle before this one has gone to his meeting.
