Chapter 1

“Daddy, I’m scared”

I had to wake up from my nap after which mom flew all four of us to the center of this forest.

The center was a perfect circle, which was odd. Other than a small round pillar at its center and the full moon out tonight, there was nothing interesting to see here.

Its so boring here.

I was just about to doze off on dads wavy blonde hair again, when I started to hear leaves and branches rustling in the darkness of the forest around us. Packs of wolves, more than twenty at least started getting out of the darkness of the forest and into the moon lit clearing at the center.

Is this what dad wanted to show me today?

He has been talking about coming to this place for a month now, but annoyingly didn’t give any more details. He simply said it was a special surprise just for me. Is this what he meant? If so, this is not a good surprise. At all!

I’m scared.

I put my fingers through his hair again, and leaned down to his ear to whisper again.

“Daddy, I’m scared”

No response. He was actually smiling. He can be so annoying sometimes.

I could talk to mom, and she could fly all of us out again, Although it's super cool, I don’t know how she manages to make us float in air. If the wolves attack, dad can create a wall of fire around us. He did that once before that one time. Again super, super cool. Even though he can be annoying sometimes, dad's awesome!

Evelyn can make rain out of thin air, though I don’t know how that would be useful, and she’s only an arm length taller than me.

I checked.

So unfair.

I can’t do any of those amazing things. The wolves would probably just eat me up.

I can speak a bit loudly and get moms attention, and ask her to fly us the hell out.

Though I have to make sure not say “hell” when I ask her that. Though If I do that, I’ll probably get the wolves attention as well.

I have her eyes.

Her light brown eyes were gazing around the clearing as she started moving closer to the round stone pillar at the center.

She had long straight hair, the shade of bubble gum pink. It reached all the way to her shoulders where she was carrying a brown leather duffle bag over her white hoodie. The hoodie was zipped half way over a yellow shirt underneath.

Her left hand was holding up a thinly braided gold chain, connected to something I saw her wearing once before, though I can’t exactly recall when. That something was a large round deep red stone, like a very small ball. It probably weighed a ton.

Her skin was the shade of a freshly baked cookie, like the ones she makes for me in the afternoons. Combined with the warmth she was simply radiating at this moment, it actually had the effect of actually calming me down, ever so slightly. Her right hand was tightly gripping my dad’s, who was standing a few inches to her right.

Dad’s also smiling, so something is definitely up. His green eyes tried to track me over his shoulders, as if we were playing hide and seek, on his head. We were on our way here.

I clearly won of course!

He was wearing his favorite long sleeved gray shirt and dark blue jeans tonight and I was on his shoulders so I should be pretty safe. Though if I stay here for much longer a wolf, or a pack of wolves could jump up and grab me and not even touch him.

Man those bedtime stories are really not helping right now at all!

Evelyn is standing near moms leg, holding her small black and white Bolum. Her light brown eyes were also looking the wolves approaching her, though she looked calm standing tall as her curly blonde hair rippled with the calm breeze out tonight.

I could…

..nah..

She probably say I’m a scaredy cat, and I’m am not a scaredy cat!

I’ll probably just whisper to dad again, and ask what’s happening.

I leaned down to my dads right ear again to ask him for the third time what was happening.

“Hush Asa, your mom’s about to speak”

aghhh..

I put my figures though his hair and pulled slightly.

“ahhhh..!” as he reacted with surprise, though beaming with joy completely this time.

“You are so annoying…” I exclaimed, as I looked to the side as my mom started speaking.

“Friends. Guardians.”

All the wolves instantly stopped moving. The only sound I could hear was the light breeze moving through the leaves in the forest around us.

“Every ten years on a full moon, the doors to his sanctuary can be opened. The door will allow those of whom it has already chosen, passage to his sanctuary.”

Silence.

“Every ten years, the door will choose and grant passage to two new worthy candidates. My son Asa will be one of those presented to the door for passage. As the eternal guardians of his sanctuary, one among you can present themselves to the door. Will a volunteer please come towards the pillar?”

There was some movement between the pack of wolves on the right side, and through it stepped out a small wolf with calm blue eyes with a coat of midnight black

As it got closer to the pillar, it slowly transformed…

..into a small girl with calm blue eyes and long black hair

Alright, I admit it, she was cute

She was also completely naked.

My mom moved forward and wrapped a white cloth around her. She then grabbed her hands and moved her closer to the pillar where all four of us were already standing.

Sigh. She’s an angel.

What is this feeling? Why are my palms sweating? I’m not scared anymore. Am I?

I need to ask dad whats happening.

If I ask him, she might hear me.

I’ll whisper very quietly and find out who she is.

I leaned my head down towards my dads right ear, and started to open my mouth.

Dad started chuckling.

“Not now Asa, I’ll explain who she is later on” He whispered, as he patted my leg.

“I’m surprised you don’t have any questions about this place now you know why your here”

I didn’t even say anything. How did he know?

“Joe, bring Asa closer to the pillar”, my mom whispered, as she took the little girl to the pillar and placed the half of the spherical red ruby perfectly into the top of the pillar.

Marking on the side of the pillar, which I didn’t even see before, began glowing in sequence, alternating shades of red, yellow and blue.

“Sarah, this is Evelyn. Stay close to her for a minute”

My mom then moved her fingers through the air in a circular motion on top of the pillar. A few minutes later, a really strong current of air began to appear and slowly started to take the shape of a small contained sphere of air.

The visible half of the red stone on top of the stone pillar lay at the center the spherical current of air.

Wow. Magic is so cool.

This is amazing. But what is she doing. I’m guessing she is opening the door she mentioned. What did she say about the door choosing the person entering it? How can a door choose? That’s stupid. What is his sanctuary? Who’s he? I’m guessing It's me and angel being chosen to get in the door or something.

Let me ask dad.

I crossed my arms and lay them on my dad’s head, and started to ask what was happening.

A loud rhythmic sound of clapping came directly from the darkness of the forest right in front of me

There was a sudden rustling and noise all around us, and fully armored men in silver and bronze plate and helmets walked out from the darkness of the forest into the moon lit clearing.

The man clapping emerged last from the forest.

He was tall, muscular, with dirty blonde hair and light green eyes. He was wearing a long blue coat with black stars scattered throughout. Hanging from his silver chain around his neck was a blue emerald gem the size of my fist.

He was calm and collected.

“Christopher!”, my dad exclaimed, and I could suddenly feel his shoulders suddenly tense.

“You remember my name! I should consider myself lucky that the great Emry’s recognizes me.”

He stopped clapping and calmly moved his hands to his sides.

“Now to make sure you remember more than my name”

He quickly moved his hands up and out of thin air produced a bolt or was it a spear of pure blue and yellow fire.

He threw it directly at us.

…at me?

That feels weird.

Splashes of scarlet hit my face, as I felt dad and I moving backwards
