chapter 2

Technologies definitely do make things easy. It is easier to cook with oven than with coal because trust me it was so hard to keep the fire on and to avoid having a ‘black face’ with it. The refrigerator is just a wonderful creation to keep food fresh and an icy cold juice is just so good on warm days. Thanks to the wide usage of the internet, I get to start a blog on my own, share my beauty tips as well as check the reviews about certain products first without resorting to belief whatever the salesgirls say. In a way, I am more knowledgeable about things since I can always check it up through the magic website “Google”.

Even my mum is never bored when I go to work since she can surf the website for cooking recipes, read newspapers and watch YouTube! In fact, she was so glad that she learned how to surf the net considering that she stopped schooling when she was 10 years old because of poverty. It also saves my life once. I had a food poisoning and I did not know that the effect will only appear after 4 hours. It was just the time it had taken for me to return home. I started vomiting nonstop and my poor mother actually Google up my symptoms and did the emergency treatment using stuff from the kitchen. I think if it was not for her and Google which I am thankful for I might have lost my life or maybe suffer a side effect. In a way, I do agree that technologies are useful if you have the money to own them.

There are also reasons why I abhorred technologies as well. Seriously, why people tend to associate technologies with how big your paychecks are? Many tend to admire people with the latest phones, big branded cars or smart watches than actually looking into your personalities. There are many occasions where people told me to get a new phone to look ‘educated’. I thought that was actually an insult than a joke because the size of the phone does not consider how huge my brain is. Again, they might be right because many people who appeared ‘rich’ use expensive branded phones. I just don’t understand why do I need to conform to this kind of belief-not smart phones equals to an uneducated person.

With the website, information spread really fast and a person can suddenly shoot to fame overnight. Of course it is everyone's dream to become famous just like Taylor Swift, Michelle Phan and Sai who became famous because of youtube. However, not everyone gets to attain that kind of fame. A YouTuber was humiliated after showing her bare face without makeup and after makeup.

There are many cyber bullies because these do not have to show their true face making them more daring to such actions. There is also a lot of evilness lurking inside the net waiting for their prey to fall into their traps. It is a dangerous world inside the net and children are easily exposed to these predators. Gone was the day when children will innocently wrote letters to their friends, leave a note to their parents, sending cards and play hide and seek.

The inventions of ‘Ipad’ and ‘Iphones’ have surely upgraded the level of children’ toys to the galaxy level. I have seen many parents pacify their children with iPad and iPhone. It doesn’t matter if the child treat the phone harshly as long that ‘they do not cry’. I guess my buttocks will be in safe zone if I am born in this century.

The fun of smart phones caused some parents to have lack of attentions towards their children. A child actually falls to her death where parents were so engrossed with their smart phones. It was too late to cry over spilled milk.

Children and parents do talk a word at the dinner table because everyone was so busy ‘poking’ at their phones. My colleague actually called a person who is just a walk away because she was so lazy to walk over to the table. I wonder what had happened to the ‘real communication’ we used to have in the past? People now prefer to talk to the phone than talking face to face? I thought the phone is to make long distance calls possible but it now it has become a tool to distance ourselves from making real live conversation. Maybe the phones have taken the one part of our body that we always exercise our mouth away.

The invention of calculators, laptops, softwares and phones have sure help us to do our assignments and works faster but it also create a group of people who are unable to spell, write and count without relying on these items. Many students have cannot plus 22+10 without resorting to using the calculator. Many uses their sms, whatsapps, whechat, twitter language in a formal letter without being able to google it up. They are even too lazy to flip the dictionaries as they can use the ‘Google translate” to translate their native language into English. It is not correct. A course mate needed to redo his work because he actually copy, paste into the Google translate and then passed it as his own work. He was caught red handed as the lecturer was technology savvy.

In way, technologies does bring changes in our everyday life be it good or bad. I guess there is a price to pay for every technology advancements that we made in life. It is even worse when the society values us based on certain technological things we have. I don’t know where the technology is heading but there may come the time where people value me based on how perfect my genes or DNA strands are and I dread the day it comes. Maybe I will not even live that long for the immortality technologies to appear.
