Right from the start we're left asking questions, and the author does not waste words. Within a very short time I had a great picture of the main character and was feeling for her already. 

And besides the obvious questions about what her supernatural follower, you can't help but be hooked by the sight of a down trodden underdog with hidden potential, about to start her first day at a high school where she is going to be eaten alive.
