My parents had a very low opinion of the United States. Not entirely unwarranted. It was the 70s. A lot of their friends had escaped Chile and Argentina. Interestingly - Star Wars was Apocalypse Now in Scifi (Lucas had started writing it while working on the script for Apocalypse Now with John Milius). So Star Wars was in fact an expression of counter culture, to an extent - to which my folks should have responded favorably... oh and also, they were total snobs. Stendhal better than scifi (true too, but still...)
