Robert Batten liked an update for Rule Britannia

Hey all, so this is it, last day of the campaign and the end is nigh.

While we won’t be seeing Rule Britannia published through Inkshares, there are plenty of other books worth your time, and $. The Nerdist Sci-Fi competition is nearing its end and if I were you, I would be taking my refund/credits and using them to get yourself a copy of Ferd Crotte’s Mission 51.

Head on over to the story page and read some samples, then get in quick and lets help Ferd get over the line!

Robert Batten liked an update for Curio Citizen

    Hello again!

Guess what? We only need 10 more orders to hit the 200 readers mark! That would be an amazing accomplishment. It would also help Curio Citizen keep hold of 1st place! You all have done so much for me already, and I am so grateful. I hate to ask more of you, but there are 4 days left in the contest, so please help me make the final push towards finishing in the top 3 by asking another family member or friend to pre-order a copy. Only $10 could change my life forever! I also have more followers than I do pre-orders, so please consider pre-ordering if you haven’t already. It would mean so much to me! Remember, the deadline for pre-orders has been changed to this Tuesday, June 27th!

Click HERE to pre-order Curio Citizen.

And here’s today’s look into the world of Curio Citizen:

Marea Reúnen is Inquieto’s aristocratic mother. She came from a wealthy family and succeeded in her schooling and career well enough to maintain some semblance of the wealth she once enjoyed. Because of this and her high intelligence, even by paz standards, she has a slightly superior attitude towards others. She tempers that attitude most of the time, but it comes out full force when Carmen becomes involved in her son’s life.

Marea is a high-up employee of the Understand, the planet’s most vital scientific research center. On a planet where the dominant species values intelligence above all other traits (aside from peace), paz as intelligent as Marea are granted a level of respect and wealth that appropriately corresponds to the great mental aptitude and time it takes to perform such vigorous research.

Marea does indeed spend a good deal of her time at the Understand. She is working on something secret, something big, which she can’t discuss with anyone--not even her own family.

    --------

“Ah, everyone’s here,” she said pleasantly in a smooth voice. She, too, was dressed in black, but a lustrous amber sash covered most of her clothing, along with a mesh of amber swathing her bald head, which she lowered as she scanned the gathering.

“Marea,” Oyente said. “Excellent timing. Dinner is set to be ready in a few minutes.”

“Yes,” Marea said in acknowledgement, but her attention was focused on me. I stood, getting the distinct impression she did not want me dirtying her furniture.

    ---------

“Tell us a little about your planet,” Aliado requested.

I noticed both Oyente and Marea tense a little at his words. They exchanged a look of disapproval tinged with nerves.

“It’s surprisingly similar to Paz,” I said, truthfully. “The soil, the trees, the blue sky, the yellow sun. The people.” I looked straight at Marea at the last.

“So similar,” said Aliado. “That’s odd, isn’t it?”

I turned my eyes to him. “Yes,” I said, meeting his pointed intrigue with my own. “It is.”

“And,” Marea spoke, light and thin, “how are humans like paz?”

I took a quiet breath and floated my gaze across the table. Her heavy black eyes studied me while her hand lightly clutched a delicate glass, her full lips curled in an aristocratic smile.

“Can you not see?” I asked. Her eyes brightened, but their light was not internal, only a reflection of the dying sun.

    -------

Thank you so much for your continued support. You have all done so much for me already, and I am incredibly grateful. 4 more days and hopefully we’ll see this book published! The deadline is Tuesday, June 27th.

Robert Batten liked an update for Mission 51

      Important update:

Inkshares has decided to extend the Nerdist Sci-Fi Contest by a few days. It now ends on June 27, not June 25 as previously announced. That makes things even more difficult as it gives the competition more time to catch up and displace Mission 51 from the top three.

You can see our challenge here in the current  standings:
186 unique name/email pre-orders for the contestant in 1st place
      172 for Mission 51 in 2nd place
169 for the contestant in 3rd place
144 for the contestant in 4th place
121 for the contestant in 5th place

Only the top three win a comprehensive publishing contract with Inkshares. This is a remarkable opportunity for any writer! But I cannot do it without the demonstrated support of readers like you. For this contest, Inkshares measures the contestants by the number of pre-orders coming from unique individual name/email.

Mission 51 is a novel I have written as a fun science fiction about an alien, within the context of true people, places, and events during 1954-1969. This alien is not bad, as depicted in most science fiction about aliens that come to Earth. But is he good? Or is he both bad and good, like the human race? I guess you’ll have to read the book to find out! :-)

I am in danger of being displaced from the top three. If you haven’t, please place your pre-order now. It is absolutely essential!

And if you have pre-ordered, please sit someone down and help them through the process of a pre-order. It is difficult for me to ask this of you who have already been such a support, but this will be the only way to keep Mission 51 in the top three.

Let’s do this! Let’s get Mission 51 published! Thank you!

Robert Batten liked an update for The Last Faoii

Listen up, Faoii! I’ve got a really short update for you:

I just sent in the revised edit for The Last Faoii. The changes that were made are FANTASTIC and I’m so pleased and excited to be working with this editor. Together, we’re creating a fabulous story for you. You’re going to love it.

Keep up your fighting spirit and if you know of someone that loves Fantasy, strong women, and supporting new authors, make sure to send them over to our barracks so they can pick up a sword of their own. They won’t regret it. ;)

Shields up. I’ll talk to you again as soon as I have more news.

Robert Batten liked an update for Proteus

Well folks, I have news and I have news.
None of it is very good, though.

We continue to fall behind in the contest. Right now we’re sitting at 22 pre-orders behind third place. On the plus side, we have been doing really surprisingly well with getting new orders in every day the past couple of days Everyone else has just been doing better than we have.

We all have good days and bad days, though. I’m hoping one of the next couple of days will be a bad one for them, and that all of mine are good ones. I lack the ability to quit, and I’m still way too close to the top three to seriously consider doing so, so I intend to proceed as if my victory is a given.

In other news, apparently Inkshares goofed and announced the wrong deadline. The contest ends not on the 25th, but on the 27th. So two extra days. Honestly, I would have preferred the closer deadline, but I can work with this too.

Please remember: I have absolutely zero hope of finishing this thing without your help. I’ll be honest here and say I am running out of people to ask, and I have nowhere near the time I’d like to find new ones before the end of this contest. I am heavily dependent on you who have already supported me this far bringing in your friends and families to help me. To that end, please remember I am running this promotion for anyone who successfully refers someone to pre-order. I like to think my art is at least passable enough as an incentive.

Press on, loyalists. Like the dedicated crew on The Somnambule, we are dedicated to one mission and one only: Always keep the ship moving forward.

Robert Batten liked an update for Crow’s Gambit

Hey there supporters of Crow’s Gambit. We are still battling in the contest (at 5th place) but could honestly use some love today.

To keep you up to date on the story I just posted and sent out an Excerpt from Chapter 13. This tidbit gives a little more background on the alien Sylph.

I am very grateful for all of your support and I know everyone’s time and money is limited. But if you have ANY friends (enemies are good too) who might be interested in the story please share the information and suggest they make a pre-order. Remind them that if the book does not get published their money is refunded. However, if the book does get published then part of the proceeds go to benefit the Le Sueur Public Library.

Robert Batten liked an update for Mission 51

Mission 51 family! This is a call to arms!

Despite a good number of pre-orders these past few days, the competition (177 entries) continues to surge. We have now dropped out of 1st place, and the ones in 3rd and 4th are coming on strong. We NEED to keep pushing even harder!

Here is the leaderboard as of this morning, in terms of unique name/email who have placed a pre-order:

164 for the contestant in 1st place
              163 for Mission 51
145 for the contestant in 3rd place
129 for the contestant in 4th place
117 for the contestant in 5th place

Mission 51 has a large number of followers, 346 to be exact. You are the best fans of Mission 51. If every follower placed a pre-order, we would win by a landslide!!

There are only 3 days left in the contest. PLEASE, if you have not pre-ordered, do it now and help us win! Be a part of crowdfunding Mission 51 into a published reality!

For all of those who have pre-ordered, thank you very much, and can you find ONE other person in your life who would enjoy Mission 51? Would you sit them down and help them through the process of placing a pre-order? That would help immensely!

Thanks again, everyone! Help me keep pushing!

So through editing I was just introduced to the simple but helpful character impact matrix (https://robertbatten.net/2017/06/22/character-impact-matrix/).

I thought I’d throw the question out there - what are your favourite craft tools/techniques?

                Hello, everyone!

The manuscript is in Inkshares’ hands, delivered to them this past Monday! It is very exciting. From here, it is an estimated six months before it could be in your hands. So, that means you will either receive the book at the end of this year or very early next year! I’m sorry it took so long, but I wanted to make sure my beta readers could help me polish it up nicely for you.

I’ve already begun work on book two, and so far my go-to-beta is loving it. That has me super pumped.

Sidenote:  Consider supporting Evan Graham and his book Proteus. He’s currently in the Nerdist publishing contest and in 4th place. He needs to get into 3rd in order to win the contest and get the full publishing deal, and potentially movie and tv rights. You’d be helping a really nice person who is super passionate about what he does.

About the book: Cyborg soldier Jacob Sicarius awakens early from stasis to find the crew of his multi-generational colony ship entrenched in civil war. Can he win the war against the mutineers and the malfunctioning AI implant fighting for control over his brain? Sounds cool right? Let’s help him when that contest!

Robert Batten liked an update for Proteus

My friends...our situation is grim. Our campaign has slowed to a crawl while our competition soars. We remain in fourth place, ten orders behind third, although by the end of the day that could turn into twenty orders if we can’t build up some momentum again.

Remember: the top three all win the full publishing deal. Fourth place gets nothing.

On the plus side, we’ve gathered 120 people to support Proteus so far, and I am extremely thankful to each and every one of you. I hate to ask even more of you who have already done so much, but picture this: what if everyone who already ordered a copy managed to convince one person each to order a copy for themselves? We would soar to 240 orders, and all but guarantee our place in the number one spot for the duration of the contest.

So let me ask once again: please, try to find one person you know will help. Ask your spouse, your child or parent. Ask your best friend, or a good friend who loves science fiction. Ask anyone. I know each of you must know at least one person who would do this if you asked.

Remember I’m still offering a promotion for new referrals: a hand-drawn portrait, done by yours truly, for anyone who has bought a copy and is able to refer just one person to do the same.

We can still do this. We can do this together.
