M Munro liked an update for The Bones of the Past

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since my last update and I have lots of news!

First, the developmental edits are done. This was a massive job I’ve been tackling for the last 5 weeks that even involved me taking two weeks off work and doing nothing else for the entire time. I’m happy to say the time was well spent and the book has improved in leaps and bounds. My amazing developmental editor gave me lots of work that mostly involved adding in more of pretty much everything and making sure the story and wording were clear. Usually editors recommend cutting chapters, characters or even entire story arcs at this stage, so being asked to do the opposite was a very positive sign!

I’ve uploaded the most recent versions of the sample chapters onto my Inkshares page for anyone who’s curious about the changes. We still have copy editing to get through and then proofreading so these samples will get polished up a little more yet before going to print.

Second, the publication date has been pushed back to May 30th, 2017. There were a number of production and marketing reasons for the change. But the positive side of it is I got a couple extra weeks to work on developmental editing and a slightly more relaxed schedule for the following stages.

And finally, I should have a couple early versions of my book cover back from the cover designer around September 15th which I will be sure to send out to gauge everyone’s opinion!

Thank you all for your continued patience and support! The Bones of the Past is well on its way and it’s going to be awesome!

 Cheers!

    Hi, Kaytalin and everybody!

Just chiming in quick, if I can. (Literally, I am wondering how brief I’ll be here.)

As it’s been mentioned, reaching out via direct message on inkshares can be a good way to go. You have to both follow each other before Direct Message becomes an option, though, I think. BUT, and this goes for everybody... DO NOT USE A FILL-IN-THE-BLANK TEMPLATED MESSAGE!!! Or, if you DO, do not make it obvious.

During recent contests, I’ve been getting maybe 1 direct message every other day which I can tell is just a cookie-cutter message. "Hi [Joseph Asphahani]!!1! I really like your [The Animal in Man] book! Such great characters. Really gripping! Would you have time to check out my own [here’s a link]? And if you like it, please share with all your friends! Hope I can count on your pre-order!"

Something like that does waaaay more harm than good.

I know everyone has a busy life. It’s all too true. We’ve all got day jobs. And sometimes during a campaign you wish you could find that ONE strategy that’s like the EASY button. But which is better,  spending an hour spamming 100 people to secure 1 order, or spending one hour to painstakingly examine another author’s work (or two) and have some genuine comments that start a real conversation, which is much more likely to earn you not just a pre-order, but SUPPORT?

Campaigning sucks. It’s so tiring. I know. But cutting corners is just going to get you lost. Take each step forward carefully.

    ....damn. Wasn’t so brief.

(Again, this comment is focused solely on the concept of Direct Messages, and may or may not apply to other aspects of the campaigning experience. User discretion advised.)

DAX FANS! ...Hey, does my forehead look huge in this photo? Stupid phone cameras. Grrr...

I HAVE AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT! As always, I must thank my backers for your continued patience and apologize for the delays.

For those not in the know, I handed in my completed manuscript at the beginning of July. Unfortunately, it was roughly around this same time that Inkshares began going through some organizational changes.

DON’T BE ALARMED! I have been assured that my book will in fact be published as promised, and you will eventually have your copy in your hands and/or on your e-reading devices of choice. What I still don’t know is WHEN.

To make a long story short, Inkshares has been going through some growing pains, and they have quite a backlog of books waiting to be published. I have not been informed where I stand in this long line exactly, but I understand the Inkshares team is hard at work squeezing everyone in on their production calendar. I thank the Inkshares staff for their service, and I do not envy their herculean task at hand.

Now, let me get to the point. I have a story, and I want to share it with you awesome folks who were gracious enough to buy it. And I know some of you are itching to read it, judging by my daily encounters of "HEY, TONY! WHERE’S THE BOOK?!"

So, if you have purchased a copy of Dax Harrison, you can expect an email from me soon. Check you inbox over the next day or so for the subject line "DAX HARRISON - The Early Ebook Edition".

If you choose to read the story at this time, here’s a couple things to keep in mind:

First, the book has not yet been professionally copyedited. Meaning, you may run into the occasional grammatical error, weird sentence structure, etc. I’d like to think I was thorough, but it happens.

Second, I would love your feedback! If you like my silly little sci-fi tale, please leave a review on Inkshares! I would love to direct you to leave reviews on Amazon and Goodreads as well, but those pages won’t exist until we get closer to publishing.

Reviews = more eyes on the book = more books sold = Tony gets to write more books!

I will keep you all informed on the publishing news as soon as I have it. For those of you that prefer to wait for the official ebook/paperback of Dax, I hope I won’t have to keep you waiting too much longer.

Thanks again! You’re the best. Now I’m off to outline some more of Dax 2: Space Boogaloo. (No, that is not the actual title)

      -Tony

Actually, I’ll take it a step further: Don’t mass-email people if you haven’t asked them to opt in to your mass email list. I’ve been added to multiple mailing lists without signing up. And most of them also have no easy option to unsubscribe.

(I’d be less bothered by this if most of the mass emails weren’t asking me to pre-order a book I already ordered, but that’s beside the point.)

The reader update module on the site is a wonderful tool that bakes in the reader’s right to opt in or out. People who follow your book have told you it’s totally cool to send them updates through that. Anything beyond that, you need to ask.

There has recently been a raft of people sending mass emails without blind copying everyone. This is very insensitive to everyone and causes me concern.

Please note that if you send me a mass email without using BCC I can gaurantee that I will not be pre-ordering your book.

Sorry but I gotta take a hardline on this!
