Robert Batten liked an update for Shadow King

Good morning!

I know you’re all eager to get your hands on “Shadow King” (I had two people at my office yesterday ask when they were getting their copies!).  "Shadow King" continues to wait in the Inksahres queue for the editor, along with several other books. As soon as I have news about release dates, I’ll let you know right away.

In other news... as you know from previous updates I did go ahead and enter another manuscript into the 2017 Launchpad Manuscript Competition (because I’m crazy like that).

I found out Tuesday that “The Devil You Don’t” has made the first cut and been named to the Top 75 list!

So, what does this mean? It means I still have a long way to go to get from Top 75 to (hopefully) Top 10 and beyond.

I can, however, start to crowdfund for the Inkshares portion of Launchpad 2017 on August 28.

Many of you showed a tremendous amount of generosity and support last year for “Shadow King” and it wouldn’t be waiting for the editor now without each and every one of you.

I am, however, painfully aware that asking for your support for a second book when the first doesn’t even have a release date yet is a BIG ASK. But I’m going to ask anyway, and I hope that you’ll all be as enthusiastic about “Devil You Don’t” as you are about “Shadow King.”

I’ll be sending another update next week with details about when I’ll be opening the new manuscript for funding, key dates, and a list of raffle-type giveaways that I have planned for different pre-order milestones. In the meantime, you can see a synopsis of “Devil” on my Inkshares page (preview chapters coming soon!): www.inkshares.com/books/the-devil-you-don-t

We made it to 5th last year -- and I know getting into the Top Three is totally achievable this year!

Best,
Susan

Robert Batten liked an update for It’s All Fun and Games

    Hi Gamers!

I’ve got a couple pieces of information to share with you, both about It’s All Fun and Games and its sequel, More Fun and Games

    1) It’s All Fun and Games has been nominated for a Dragon Award at this year’s DragonCon!

DC is a huge convention, and pulling off a win could be massive. You can register to vote at awards.dragoncon.org. There’s no cost, and takes about 3 minutes total (your ballot may not come for a day or two). If you can share this with even one or two people (or share in your networks), I would really appreciate it.  Rick Riordan has a book in my category, so the more folks we can pile into the ballot box the better!  Several of my other Inkshares authors have also been nominated - if you’re interested in helping out some indie authors here’s a list:

    • Horror Novel: A God in the Shed, by J-F. Dubeau
    • Science Fiction Rise, by Brian Guthrie (for hard SF) or Space Tripping by Patrick Edwards (for silly SF)
    • Apocalyptic Novel: The Seventh Age: Dawn, by Rick Heinz

    2) Over on Amazon IAF&G has received just over 80 reviews. From what I’ve been told, breaking the 100 review mark affects Amazon’s algorithms and will increase my marketing visibility. If you’ve got an Amazon account, please take two or three minutes to pop over and leave me a review. Anything helps, even "It’s good."
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/1941758819/

Believe me when I say that books live and die based on their reviews (or lack thereof).

    3) Lastly, the sequel. As you’ve noticed I need to crowdfund for this one too. I’d assumed the 2400 copies I’ve sold to date would prove the market, but it is what it is. I need 250 preorders at the fewest, and ideally as many as 750 (the amount determines the production run and level of marketing oompf I get).  In the roughly 3 months since I started crowdfunding I’ve sold 66. If you are interested in helping make the sequel a reality, you can find it right here.  As a friend pointed out, when you average in the cost of the first book (between zero and $5 for most folks), even with the new cost the price-per-book isn’t too bad.

I hope everyone’s summers have been good (except for my supporters in the Southern Hemispheres, in which I hope your winters have been good).

    Cheers
    Dave

      Hi folks.

First, and most importantly, the little button I click to send a thank you to supporters doesn’t appear to have been working this whole time, which means other than a receipt you haven’t gotten anything from me.  I’m embarrassed by this.

To all of you who have supported More Fun and Games so far, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.  It really does mean the world to me that you put your money where your faith is.

Robert Batten liked an update for Crow’s Gambit

        Greetings supporters of Crow’s Gambit!

I know I have been quiet lately. The Fall university semester is getting ready to start and the students (and faculty) are scurrying.

Today I have big news though. Crow’s Gambit has been selected as the Staff Syndicate pick for August. I am honored at this selection and the support it brings for the story. We are creeping closer to our goal.

Stay tuned for more updates and some Crow’s Gambit activities in the near future...

Hello! This update is coming fast on the heels of my last one -- but the announced the Launchpad Top 75 today and I am excited to announce that "Devil You Don’t" is on the list!

The next milestone will be being (hopefully) included on the Top 50 list. I anticipate this will be announced in about two weeks.

Stay tuned for more! And thanks, as always, for following!

            Updates, Faoii! Listen up!

Did I tell you that the cover I’ve been using forever isn’t going to work because of copyright issues? Did I also tell you that the cover design artist I was working with had to drop the project very suddenly and so there was a few hours there where I thought we weren’t going to have a cover at ALL? I’m telling you, Faoii, it’s been a wild couple of days/weeks. But this is where we’re currently sitting, and I am incredibly pleased. Tell me what you think:

Robert Batten followed King of Fire

1845. A white American en route home from Senegal is stranded on a deserted island when his ship is set aflame and sunk. But he is not the only survivor, for he’d unknowingly been traveling on a slave ship, and with him is the slave who set the fire.

Hello, everyone. I’m happy to report that I’ve carved my way through a bunch of edits and some significant rewrites on "Devil You Don’t" as we await any news from the Launchpad judges, and I’m really, REALLY pleased with how the story is developing.

Based on the timeline Launchpad has posted, they will announce the Top 25 on September 12. I’m not sure if they will be announcing a Top 75 and Top 50 as they did last year (they have those categories listed on their "prizes" tab but not on their timeline/calendar). But if there is any news, I’ll share it with you all as soon as possible.

Thanks for following "Devil" on this excellent journey -- if you have questions, don’t hesitate to send me a message!

              Best,

Robert Batten liked an update for Rune of the Apprentice

Baby Freya is now 2 months old! Jeez! The past few months has been a whirlwind of love, excitement, family, and sleep deprivation!

(Full post can be read on my blog HERE to see future posts sign up to my newsletter HERE)

Despite the newfound groggy-eyed joys of fatherhood, I have still been hard at work not only on RUNE’s sequel (Oath of the Apprentice), but also on an exciting new Indie Video Game project called Shadow of the Moon (which takes place chronologically between The Rune Chronicles books 1 and 2). I’m so excited to tell you about this game I’m shaking... Or is that the coffee which is currently keeping me awake?! The world may never know...

Many of you might remember Shadow of the Moon from the collaborative Inkshares video game anthology I was a part of called Too Many Controllers. Yes, that same book which "won" the Nerdist and Inkshares Video Game Publishing Contest. (And yes, thanks for asking, I am still sore about the book being canned.) Well, some friends and I were talking about how TMC being canceled shouldn’t be the death of such a great story. We were sad, however, because Shadow of the Moon was written with video game mechanics at its core, and therefore, did not really read well (make sense) as a stand alone literary work.

I kept on trying to figure out a way around this because Shadow of the Moon’s female protagonist, Zera, is featured heavily as a main character in The Rune Chronicles Book 2: Oath of the Apprentice. I could not get over how cool Zera’s background and unique motivations were and desperately wanted readers to have a chance, if they were interested, to know more about her and why she was such a bad ass. Sadly, try as I might, I could not find a good fix to the logistical story problems and was stumped for months!

Well, during the days following Freya’s birth I came to the crazy conclusion that if I could not "write" a solution for the story dilemma, the only "logical" course of action was to actually turn Shadow of the Moon into a full fledged indie video game! GG EZ Fix!

I must have been profoundly sleep deprived because changing mediums would add a huge, exponential multiplier to the amount of work required. Like, There are no words which can adequately describe how much more effort making a video game, even an indie, will be. But I have been working on this project for two months now, and trust me folks, Zera’s story is, hot damn, well worth it! Truly.

Seen above is Zera, the protagonist of Shadow of the Moon, and I have so much more I’m dying to share with you all! We have art, game design mechanics, real to life martial arts, and even code for our custom SDL game engine (which should run a playable demo soon.) Its crazy awesome how much cool shit will be in this game! And the story, oh how the story has grown and evolved!

All of this is thanks to our amazingly talented team. Despite my sleepless nights, I have been able to gather a super dedicated group over at Apotheosis Studios to help me transform my novella into a Rogue-like Action-Adventure, 2D Top Down, RPG Video Game of epic, pixelated proportions! (Think Hyper Light Drifter meets Darkest Dungeon meets Bastion. Yes, you heard me right--we are not fucking around. This game is the real deal.)

I am leading this fearless indie dev team as Creative Director/Writer and so far we have 2 other writers/designers, 1 programmer, 1 editor/marketer, 2 "interns", a wolf, and a viking baby! What could possibly go wrong?!?! If you want to join our ranks, hit me up at @StoneJamison  (Currently we are looking for a pixel and/or sprite artist, and music composer, btw!)

I’m also super excited to say that I will documenting our game progress on my blog HERE with an Apotheosis Studios Indie Game Dev Blog Series! I have so much more to share (and some really killer art) but will save those additional details about the game for the "official" blog series, so stay tuned! And yes, I will be doing all of this with a new baby. Many believe I have lost my mind, which if true, should make this game and RUNE’s sequel pretty freaking awesome, haha!

All jokes aside, buckle up Masters and Apprentices and get ready for many more blog posts to come. I am so excited to not only share developments and updates on Shadow of the Moon game development, but also how my wife and I raise our Viking Ninja baby girl.

And in case you are wondering how one raises a little Viking Ninja baby girl in 2017... Well, I’m not really sure, but I figure age and gender appropriate toys (swords, obviously!); good role models (bad ass active duty Army musician mommy and Zera of Shadow of the Moon!); and a loving, strong, and supportive daddy (I’m still growing out my "Ragnar Viking haircut") is a good place to start!

Stay tuned via my news letter HERE and I’ll let you know how it all goes!

Oh, and P.S. if you have not yet posted a review for Rune of the Apprentice on Amazon Dear god, please do so! We currently have 66 reviews, but need 100+! It really helps! Seriously! Thank you!
