Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for Proteus

Let me paint you all a very pretty picture:

That’s right, Proteus is still sitting firmly in the top three, and only climbing higher. There’s plenty cause for celebration for coming as far as we have, and I owe everyone who’s supported it so far a huge debt of gratitude. But there are some significant impending challenges ahead as we gear up to enter the final two weeks of the contest. What obstacles are those, you ask? One word: syndicates.

Syndicates are groups on inkshares that collect contributions from their members and pour all of them into one book every month. You may remember that Tantalus Depths received support from many syndicates during the last campaign; in fact I’d venture to say the campaign could not have succeeded without support from the syndicates.

So why are syndicates a problem for Proteus? Well, most of them more or less make their decisions about which book they plan to back at the beginning of the month, or even earlier. Some of the bigger ones are already narrowing down their choices to one or two options, and they’ll make their final choice within the next week or so. Because I launched my campaign for Proteus as late as I did, most of the syndicates who might have considered supporting it had already turned their attention to other books in the contest. Some of these syndicates are large, and if they pick a book I’m competing against, that book will instantly jump ahead by twenty or thirty orders all at once.

Long story short, it’s unlikely any syndicate will pick Proteus, and it’s highly likely some will pick competing books. One already has, in fact. This means we can expect some of the books we’ve already passed in the leaderboard to instantly leapfrog over us if we can’t get some more traction and build up a buffer between Proteus and the rest of the leaderboard. Since we can’t count on syndicates, we have to push forward the old fashioned way: one order at a time. So even though we’re doing really well right now by making it to the top three and holding our position, it’s crucial that we keep pushing as hard as we can to increase our numbers.

Remember, please tell all your friends and family to pre-order, and keep sharing our posts to boost our visibility. Victory is in sight, but it’s not within reach yet, and it’s going to take all of us to get there!

Hello all 93 of my followers! I hope you are having a great weekend.

42 of you have already preordered - thank you! If the rest of you preorder, we will have a little breathing room for the rest of the competition. There are 15 days left, FIFTEEN, and we have slipped to 6th place after holding onto 2nd or 3rd from the beginning.

Time is running out. We need at least 8 preorders to reclaim 3rd, and the other contestants are continuing to add to their numbers. Please preorder now if you can, or share the project with friends and talk to them about preordering their own copy!

There is some good news: I just made a book trailer! Click the banner above, or any other link in the update, and check it out on the book page. I hope you enjoy it! You can also like me on Facebook, and share the pinned video with your friends to help spread the word.

Thank you so much! Have a good rest of the weekend -

Jane-Holly Meissner liked an update for Mission 51

I was taken completely by surprise this morning with some wonderful news and I am still reeling in the excitement of it! Mission 51 is the June 2017 selection of the Rite of Passage Syndicate!

I want to thank the Syndicate Lead, Christopher Lee Eichenauer, and the entire syndicate membership for this incredible honor! I humbly join a remarkable group of authors and works and I am greatly encouraged by their faith in me and Mission 51. Please check out the Rites of Passage Syndicate and consider becoming a member of this supportive group of amazing human beings.

This boost gives further momentum to the Mission 51 campaign in the current Nerdist Science Fiction Contest on Inkshares. We remain in 1st place out of more than 160 contestants. But the contest is far from over. There are many remarkable books by talented authors in the competition. We need to keep pressing on!

I am eternally grateful to everyone who has pre-ordered a copy of Mission 51! If you have yet to pre-order, I ask that you click on the green pre-order button below. It is through your kind and generous pre-orders that Mission 51 will become a published reality. Be a part of it!  :-)

Thank you again to Christopher Lee, the Rite of Passage Syndicate, and everyone who supports Mission 51. You have all touched my heart more than you can know!

        Peace!

        Ferd

OK, I believe I have identified the issue and am deploying a few fixes now:

            1) The contest leaderboard should displaying in the correct order now.
            2) The contest leaderboard should be more readable on mobile.
            3) The strange behavior where the placement was restarting when more contenders load should also be resolved.

There still might be temporary lapses where the leaderboard is catching up to the correct number of readers (it updates every few minutes).

Please let me know if you see any more issues here!

            I had an awesome birthday!

My birthday cake, as chosen by a 7 year old and a 5 year old.

I had 2 pre-orders come in on my big 41st birthday! You know what, it technically still is June 7 in some parts of the world - just saying, if you were wondering what present to get me, hint hint.

It’s the morning after for me, time to return to my day job. Some new things are in the works for Far Flung - a chapter is undergoing revision now for a later sharing, and I’ve got a new promo blurb and book trailer on the way.

Keep the pre-orders coming. It’s an uphill battle, but we can win! The prize is a sci-fi epic that will get the absolute best revision, proofreading, and production that I can possibly provide. If I win, I’ll have the biggest challenge ever - know that I will give it my full best and that you will get a quality book.

            Let’s explore the universe!

Day three in the Nerdist Science Fiction contest, and Proteus is still climbing the ranks, sitting solidly in the top ten. The support you’ve been showing has been amazing, and I cannot thank you enough for it. As promised here comes a story-focused update. Introducing the city-sized marvel of deep space travel, The Somnambule:

The Somnambule is a home to thousands, many of which will live their entire lives on its vast decks. It is an ark. A refuge. A prison. A tomb.

Thousands of lightyears away from the home they left and the home that awaits them, the inhabitants of The Somnambule are well and truly on their own. When conflict erupts in the chambers of this colossal monolith, more than 50,000 lives hang in the balance. One man will take it upon himself to save them from destruction. But the question must be asked...who will save them from him?

              Order Proteus, and find out!

              p.s.: It’s pronounced "SAHM-nam-BYOOL" I know someone’s gonna ask. ;)

Just a quick update on the status of Mission 51. The novel continues to be #1 in the Nerdist Sci-Fi Contest on Inkshares! There are now over 150 contestants! I am thrilled!

But the contest has 18 days yet to go and the competition is really heating up. As I’m sure you know, contestants are ranked by the number of people who pre-order the book. Your pre-order would be a HUGE help and I would GREATLY appreciate it! The top three contestants win a full publication deal and you know how awesome that is!!!

If you can, please click on the green pre-order button below and help me get Mission 51 published!

                Thank you very much!

Oh, and BTW, don’t forget that each person who pre-orders a copy of Mission 51 is automatically entered in the $100 VISA raffle!

                  Hey, everyone!

So, I just signed up for a course on Coursera that is awesome and could be useful to some people here, so I thought I’d share.

It’s the University of Barcelona’s Magic in the Middle Ages, and you can audit it for free. This session just barely started, so you can get in on it without missing anything.

Feel free to post any other great resources you use to research the unusual topics you write about, from websites to books to whatever.

To motivate you to share, I’ll tell a little story.
A little while back, I was researching how to make brass. (Because it looks like gold, and Fairy Stepmothers sometimes have to make straw look like gold.) I looked everywhere for some kind of tutorial that wasn’t a) Wikipedia or b) a cheesy science teacher, because I needed just a few unusual details that didn’t quite make youtube. I’m combing through my google search, until finally! I spot it, the perfect tutorial on making brass! I click on the link, full of hope, and--

                  It’s a Minecraft tutorial.

                  The End.

Anyway, I know I’d love to hear if you’ve found gems, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.

                  Happy Writing!

This has been an issue since the start of this contest, so it’s probably already common knowledge, but in case it isn’t, I’m bringing it up here.
For some reason, the leaderboard seems to be sorting people out of order. It should list the entrees in descending order by number of unique pre-orders, but as of right now it seems to be really inconsistent. Currently the top ten are listed as follows:
                    1st: 84
                    2nd: 40
                    3rd: 44
                    4th: 40
                    5th: 38
                    6th: 36
                    7th: 37
                    8th: 28
                    9th: 31
                    10th: 29.

It’s getting really hard to tell what your actual ranking is, and I imagine for the people fighting over the top three positions, that’s pretty maddening
